ID4 might enjoy a similar nostalgia boost, but i think Jurassic Park was much more iconic and while they had similar successes at the time, there being 2 other JP films might have helped making the nostalgic cloud bigger, there are many people who enjoyed JP when they were younger but don't even seem to differentiate which was the first and which was the second film.

Jurassic World also brought dinossaurs, while Independence Day centers around alien invasions, something that has been done hundreds of times in the past few years, even Avengers and Transformers movies kinda fit the bill.

I think funding for science would increase if aliens blew up a lot of cities. Right now NASA cannot even afford a space shuttle.

Then again, destroying half the world's population and economy might also decrease government spending.
