Interstellar - Part 3

I think you are assuming the general movie going public is more intelligent than they really are.

You don't need to appeal to everybody. A billion dollar movie is one which sold 100 million tickets.

Not really, the same methods are used in advertising all the time.

It should make you take notice and want to see more. Do you really think the general movie going public are going to remember this teaser five minutes after seeing it? Most are going to go "WTF was that about? oh well"…and then be overwhelmed by the next trailer that comes on that slams them with visuals.

Im not judging the movie, we really haven't even seen a trailer yet but I think the teaser was a fail…Im excited for this movie and it did absolutely nothing for me.

Exactly, it just came off as any other "Reach for the stars young man!" would-be inspirational movie trailer.

Well for a big budget movie (though I don't know the budget of Interstellar, Im guessing it to be in the 150 to 200 ballpark) you'd want to appeal to more than the art house crowd, which is what this teaser came across as to me.

The trailer is underwhelming because it is completely indistinct. It could be selling anything from the Discovery Channel to cars.

Dude, it's Chris Nolan, he purposely leaves things indistinct in his teaser trailers. And this isn't suppose to sell you on the movie, it's suppose to plant the seed in your mind about its themes. The 'selling' part will come later. What he's done here isn't anything new.

Yup. The teaser is Cobb planting the idea of the movie in your mind. The effects of which will be gradually apparent.

I don't think that having the barest of intellectual sparks makes you part of the art house crowd.

This is a Chris Nolan movie, with a story from Kip Thorne. It's not going to be Transformers.

Yeah, well excuse me if I'm not overly enthused by rehashed stock footage. The Inception teaser may have been vague as to what it was about but you wouldn't confuse it for anything else. This was just bland.

Really? :csad:

The funny thing is that, as with Nolan's other films...once we see the film itself, we'll be able to go back to this initial announcement teaser and its meaning will probably be crystal clear.

Well, what's there to say really. It's a teaser that failed to tease me. Im sure, the trailer will come along with a little more to grasp that will make it more intriguing. Right now Im just sort of meh…then again Im not the biggest Nolan fan out there so that may be clouding my judgement a bit.

I believe that is the case. As craig has said in a couple posts this weekend, the teaser basically gives away the reason for the space mission in the film. That's a pretty big plot point and it's sitting there smacking us in the face, but a lot of people won't realize it until they see the film.

I wouldn't say that the intent of the teaser isn't clear? Just that that that same rhetoric is paired with many of those same images quite often .

I'm not talking about the rhetoric. I'm talking about the agricultural plot.

Even certain aspects of this teaser -- the crops, the bookshelf, voiceover -- will hold greater meaning once we know/see more. I like the mystery of this teaser. It's optimistic, gives me a sense of where the film is going, but I don't know what it all means yet. And I like that I don't know.

And by we, I mean those of us who haven't already read the script and know pretty much everything about this film.

Out of curiosity do you appreciate said stock footage?

Strong possibility of that.

Everyone complaining: You're going to see the movie. And chances are you will love the later trailers that convince you to. This was merely announcement it was coming. Could they have foregone this teaser all together? Probably, but I am glad that it exists.

Yep. They gave us a tone and a sample of the music. Both are different from previous Nolan films, so I am glad to see a change in those two areas.

Absolutely. I fully expect this.

Rather, I think its meaning is already clear, but how it fits into the whole film will be evident once we see the actual film.
