Interstellar - Part 4

I thought the trailer showed a visually nice looking film. It looks different from Nolan's other films which is nice.

It looks solid. I think the trailer's simultaneously trying too hard to be "epic" and not trying hard enough. It's a weird mix. I definitely think the teaser was more effective.

I honestly don't see anything really impressive or groundbreaking about the cinematography here. What is it that people like so much?

The only thing that really intrigues me here is "we ran out of food", but all that is kind of glossed over with "Look, space stuff!". Not sure why any of the rest of it happens or what the point of it is. I feel like we've seen it before, and the fact that the trailer doesn't go into what makes this movie unique much at all makes it kind of underwhelming. Also, Michael Caine's voiceovers leave something to be desired. I feel like I should care that someone went into space for some reason...but I don't yet. So far it sort of looks like CONTACT meets SIGNS meets 2001.

I'm surprised that there's very little talk about the cinematography. Pfister must be sweating bullets now. It won't be that easy anymore to go back to Nolan now that he has worked with yet another great cinematographer. :p

Wally said in a recent interview that once he split with Nolan, he knew there would pretty much be no going back.

Not that their relationship is soured or anything, it's just that Nolan is huge on working with consistent collaborators and forming long lasting working relationships. Wally relinquished that spot, and it looks like Van Hoytema could be the guy to fill it. Maybe some day they'll re-team, but it might be a long time from now.

But yes, I'm pleased with the visuals and palette from what we've seen. It looks fresh, but it also doesn't seem to be too incongruous with his previous movies either. There's still a visual continuity there.

Would you say Nolan's movies are generally considered moving or emotional?

I would say he has tried that aspect in his film but it did not actually come to fruition. I personally haven't come close to be "moved" by a Nolan film. Nor do I think that it is a generally held opinion that his films are moving or emotional.

They're emotional, but they're very explainatory, he pretty much tells the viewer how he should be feeling sometimes.

Wally just peed himself.

More seriously, it looks like Nolan, while still looking fresh. I like quite a bit.

While Nolan can be heavy-handed, I find his films moving and endearing. Memento, Begins, TDK, The Prestige, Inception and TDKR all get to me on an emotional level.

It is unclear to me how my posts here co-relate to Snyder??

Did you gauge your above "observation" from my posts in this thread or are you responding to something else I might have posted elsewhere that you happen to vividly remember?

I'm curious to see your score/rank for every Nolan film.

Hoytema worked on Let The Right One In.:up:

Yeah, this really feels different than any of Nolan's previous films. Which is great! I like how I don't know what to really expect from the film. I want to go into this like I did Inception.

Hoytema seems to be very good at taking his own visual style and adapting it to the vision of the director he's working with. I find Her to look completely different from Tinker Tailor for example, and this definitely looks like a Nolan film to me, and i find that very impressive.

There were moments in Batman Begins, TDK, TDKR and Inception that brought me to tears. People always claim Nolan's films are "cold and emotionless," but maybe it's the viewers who are being cold and emotionless, because they don't let themselves connect to a film that happens to be about a superhero or about the dreamworld.

I think the thing with Nolan is that his movies aren't overly emotional; his primary goal is to entertain the audience while making them think (/waits for someone to chime in with a remark about how "stupid" his films are and how anyone with an IQ over 12 could follow them). But there are certainly emotional scenes and moments in his films, sprinkled throughout. Maybe viewers couldn't connect to Cobb in Inception, unable to let go of his dead wife. I could. Maybe viewers couldn't connect to Bruce Wayne in TDKR when he realizes that the woman he thought was the love of his life was going to marry another man. I could.

Anyway, regardless of all that... this film looks great. Intrigued by what I see here and I can't wait to see more.

It is a bit funny when you consider Nolan continues to make love stories. Memento, The Prestige, and Inception are pretty self-explanatory imo. Even TDKT is about a boy and his love for his family and their legacy (Gotham).

Thanks! I will dismiss anything he says from now on. :BA

Every time I see him post in a thread that's even remotely related to Chris Nolan, the "Rawhide" theme starts playing in my head with a slight alteration to the lyrics: "TROLLIN, TROLLIN, TROLLIN, NOLAN, NOLAN, NOLAN!"

Yeah... but... but... Batman didn't eat shawarma or something so it was a miserable experience to watch!

So it isn't just me? Good. :funny:

How does somebody give The Prestige a 1/10? That script is amazing.

Never understood the "Nolan is cold" argument either.

Nah. :cwink: I think it's pretty obvious by now. I remember even making a joke here that I'm sure that said person will hate the trailer (or was it the poster? I can't remember :funny:) and of course he didn't disappoint. :p

RE: Nolan/"cold" comments - I get why some feel that way but personally, I don't think all of his films lack any emotional weight. The Prestige and TDKT all resonated with me on an emotional level. I think his problem is that he doesn't linger much on those scenes so you're kind of pulled out of it abruptly if that makes sense. That scene of Bruce grieving over Rachel's death is a good example for me.

Sometimes I feel like I am the only one that enjoys Nolan's wit. Thanks for proving me wrong Rowsdower!. :)

Hahahaha nope!

YOU

ARE

NOT

ALONE.
And a MOS reference!? :awesome:

Emotion is actually something i've always found interesting in his films because almost all of his main characters are driven by the loss of a loved one, and the course that their pain takes them. A lot of them become monsters like Angier in The Prestige, Lenny in Memento, and Harvey Dent and Talia al ghul in TDK, and some use it to do the right thing like Bruce Wayne or get back to their kids like Cobb. Heck this is the guy who had Bane shed a tear in his movie. I was moved by that, as corny as that sounds. What interests me here is that judging from the trailer the source of emotion for Cooper is very much alive and present in the story so instead of mourning and/or avenging loss like most nolan protagonists, he's trying to prevent loss, and that makes it even more interesting for me.
