It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's the Superman Costume Thread!

I have to disagree. First, if it wasn't for his Kryptonian heritage, he wouldn't have any powers so that's kind of a big deal.

On top of that, if he was simply a human with powers, he would have no internal conflict like other characters (Batman, Spider-man, etc). He would be a guy with powers and just because he is a good person he decides to be a hero -- boring.

Being of two worlds brings great internal conflict to the character. It's his struggle to find a place in a world which he is not a part of -- or is he!? That's the conflict and that character arc.

Also the fact that he is an alien and cares so much for humanity, to me, only strengthens his humanity. A human who cares for humans is expected but an alien who cares means so much more.

Without the Kryptonian heritage, you really have nothing.

and this is why that balance is important. you need to have a mixture of both for it to be successful... and in the minds of the costume designers, even the suit conveys that

I see your point. It's always nice for a film to be rich with examples that support the themes of the film and character. But for me, if the balance is present most everywhere else (plot, dialogue, cinematography, etc), I can overlook it being missing in the suit.

See for me that balance exists perfectly when Martha fashions the suit from the blankets Lara wraps her infant son in. We have the perfect balance of Earth and Krypton, plus we have an endearing commonality that exists across interstellar space.....a mother's love.

The concept of the total Kryptonian nature of the suit seems emotionless and cold in comparison, and it strikes no balance whatsoever.

then your problem comes with the very costume designers who made the new suit, not the fans who like the old suit.

and like i said earlier, those such as yourself like to rationalize it away for the sake of change, not for functionality
I think the director/designers felt some (understandable) pressure to come up with a suit that favorably compared to other cinematic superheroes (Batman, Thor, CA, Ironman). But a strictly “classic” Supes costume (the closest match to the comics) would essentially be a plain leotard - the kind available at a dance or yoga supply outlet. To make it look more unique and impressive, textures and other embellishments/changes were added. And these “exotic” features are more compatible with an alien origin (and less plausible as something Ma Kent stitched together from blankets on the family sewing machine).

im not looking for a classic suit made out of leotard, though... i'm looking for a design that is new, but remains faithful to the classic design.

the last thing I'd ever want is an exact prop replica of the Donner suit.

In YOUR opinion.

Kal-El's new suit doesn't hinder anything. Color, texture and lack of trunks doesn't dehumanize the suit, the man in it and/or his values and convictions whatsoever. Seriously, if you place that much importance (human significance) on color and a piece of cloth, then you must have a nihilistic perception of humanity nowadays.

I don't see Superman any less of a man just because his suit pertains of a darker tone, unique texture and no undergarments in sight. That's ridiculous. He's still a being in search of who he is, what he's meant for in life, and answers about his heritage, parents and 'destiny'. A trunkless suit won't deter him from having emotions or Ma/Pa Kent, Smallville, Lois Lane or having that innate part of him willing to die to protect and preserve life.

I think this take on the costume remains pretty faithful. Nitpicking aside, it has a red cape, blue body, S shield. That says superman to me. They kept the colours the same, didn't add black to anything.

I would say that DC has been trying to change the costume for years, its just this time around it was corporate wide, comics and new movie now.

I still think the SR suit was very faithful to the comics and that was ridiculed by most fans. If there is going to be a backlash even when you try to emulate a costume close to the comics than they were better off doing something they felt was best for the franchise aka removing the trunks.

in defense of the SR suit, it definitely indeed did have the classic elements to it... the main thing i did not like at all was the color scheme to it. thats what killed it for me

at least the MOS suit got the colors right... im very thankful for that

I really grew to love the SR suit and the contrast of bright blue and burgundy. It was the color treatment of the film that I wasn't a fan of.

So I was thinking, you know a blue leotard with long sleeves with red trunks, in this day and age, would be massively otherworldly and dare I say it, alien :D

I can't find a good pic, but what does everyone think of the Superman suit from the upcoming game "Injustice: Gods Among Us"?

Ask and you shall receive.

I like the "INJUSTICE" suit for an evil Superman (which he is in the game, right?).

Other than that, I think it's a pointless redesign.

i love how the cape is connected to the shield... that's my favorite design besides the classic design

I thought I've heard you say that in the past. I'm surprised you don't find it too alien. I always find the design a bit too alien, which is funny considering what we have for MOS.

That suit is actually pretty rad, and no Im almost positive thats not the Burton suit.

That's awesome. And I see a little bit of Superman Returns in the logo. Looks like a cool design for a Smallville costume.

it kinda reminds me of the cape of a roman centurion... the shield would be the thing that holds his cape onto the body. and believe me, if the MOS suit had that kind of cape attachment, i would like the suit even more, and you would hear much from me about the suit itself, because it compensates for the lack of red on the blue suit

I like the regality of the centurion connotation. But now thinking about the suit that way, the attachment reads more armor like (which I believe is the idea in the game) much more so than MOS's more subtle chainmail design.

Thanks spidermanJLA!~ for posting those pics. The is not a bad redesign, but I wouldn't want it as the standard / regular costume.
