James Bond In Skyfall - Part 10

Try reading Goldfinger, Fleming has some stuff to say about those Koreans. Or there's LALD that doesn't speak well of American blacks (as opposed to Carribean Blacks). There's even a chapter title I know I couldn't post on here because it would be censored. Different times. But then, Bond's subtle racism was always interesting to see why he disliked certain groups. His take on the gays (referring mostly to Kidd and Wint in DAF) is priceless.

Yeah they were product of their times when it comes to racial stuff. I can't judge it too much from a modernist point of view.

The only thing about Pierce's Bond was that he didn't have a british accent. He was pretty much an american James Bond lol. But I guess its just me, I started with Pierce's Bond movies and the N64 Goldeneye game is what introduced me to Bond.

He attempted an English accent in GoldenEye but from TND onwards he didn't bother. Also there's no such thing as a British accent.

just got my press ticket to see the film on friday - so excited, my most anticipated film of the year, I'll share my spoiler free opinions on Sat

I know exactly what chapter you mean, I couldnt believe it the first time I read that book! still remember the phrase "packed tightly in like black olives" and being amazed by that! but like you said it was a product of the general consensus/thought at the time - despite that LALD is possibly my fav Bond book

Didn't Bond and Felix also order fried chicken in that chapter too (since it was the house specialty)?

its been a few years since I last read it, but that does ring a bell - I just remember reading it on the plane going on holiday with my friends and my best mate (who's black) happened to lean over to see what I was reading as I started that chapter..... he was confused to say the least!

I don't remember them having fried chicken. I do remember them both drinking quite copiously though. I would have to look again, but I'm gonna say no.

Aside from the racism, Live and Let Die is one of my favorite books. I can't believe how much of it was butchered in the film version.

Really? I find the internet's praise for Moore annoying especially since online critics hate Brosnan's camp.

Thank you!

My mistake, I think the fried chicken is later when they are Florida now that I think about it. I think I got them confused because both events involves Leiter taking the lead and ordering for Bond. It's been forever since I read the book.

Tickets are finally on sale! Oh, and the movie officially runs at 2 hours and 23 minutes.

Felix takes the lead in a couple stories. DAF with the whiskey and branch water in upstate NY comes to mind. Never fully made use of in the movies that Felix.

Didn't care for bond's racism in the books, but he was crazier. The drugs he would take in order to accomplish some missions made him a little more devil may care in my opinion.

He's the ultimate hedonist because he knows he could die any moment. Plus, anything for the mission right. I guess they used more women in the movies to show that he's that type, but the drug use could be cool ... or turn into controversy.

How is DAF actually? When I read the novels in high school, I have to admit I skipped it because I heard a lot of negative things and because I couldn't resist the temptation of going straight to From Russia With Love.

Since we got some nice literary Bond discussion going, my favourite novels are Moonraker, From Russia With Love, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, and Thunderball are also up there. I wasn't the biggest fan of Goldfinger (instead of the movie's laser, we have Goldfinger forcing Bond to be his secretary) and Dr. No.

Bond: You expect me to talk?
Goldfinger: No Mr Bond, I expect you to type.

I liked DAF a lot. A decent amount of Bond and Felix, Ian's fascination with diamond smuggling is in full effect here (for those who have read his The Diamond Smugglers knows he's done some extensive work there), the Spangled Mob are great and never used in a movie so it'll be new and a lot of the action was never used either so it'll be mostly brand new.

Wow, much longer than QoS anyway, more like CR length, which I'm happy about, would rather have a movie be too long than too short.

It is a minute shorter then CR and one minute longer then OHMSS, my favorite two Bond films. Nice.

Just don't drink lots of fluids before going into this movie. I found it laughable that people had been waiting years to see the Avengers and then kept going in and out to the toilet during the movie and missing vital moments.

I usually go to breakfast before I go to the movies and then great a huge drink once there. Never have trouble with the need to pee. Is 2 and a half hours really that long to sit in the theater?
