James Bond In Skyfall - - - - - Part 14

was at the brits last night and Muse's song (which was blatantly written for Skyfall) was simply amazing, really wish it was the one used instead of Adelles

:csad:

My 18-month old daughter broke my beloved 007 mug yesterday. I'll bury it out in the back garden and have a ceremony, draping the mug in a Union Jack and playing Newmans 'Mother' Skyfall track in the background.

Yeah, I had heard that. Then I heard somewhere that it wasn't true.

I'm not sure what to believe.

I do want Quantum back in the next film. That storyline hasn't been resolved yet.

He was either joking and was misquoted or he was being truthful and later backtracked.

I posted this over at Amazon when the DVD came out. I guess I'll throw up here as well.

My thoughts on Skyfall. :007

While I do like Skyfall a lot overall, I think I'm going to be in that catagory of people who feel that it is overrated.

There were four problems I had with it:

1. The whole Silva feeling up Bond scene. That was a tad ridiculous. More importantly, it was unnecessary.

2. Since when does Bond come from money? The way I always remembered it was that after his parents died, Bond was taken in by either his father's or mother's sister (I can't remember which). He didn't have money, but went to good private and prep schools because he was smart and had received scholarships. In fact, Vesper makes mention of this in Casino Royale when she and James first meet on the train. Two films later, and they are changing the character's history? Not good. Not smart. I figured from the trailers that Skyfall was going to be the name of the mission that Silva was sent on by M. Guess not. It's the name of a house.

3. Did Bond sleep with Moneypenny after she shaved him? It sure seemed like it then. That is, until we see at the end that she is Eve Moneypenny. I'm still unsure.

4. Yep. Having Naomie Harris be Eve Moneypenny. Political correctness run amok? We already have a black Felix. Yes, Jeffrey Wright is excellent. And yes, there should have been a lot more of him in Quantum of Solace, but does that mean every classic Bond character has to be recast with a minority? I'm surprised Q wasn't Asian. :whatever:

Having her character turn out to be Moneypenny is worse simply for logical reasons. What do I mean? Well, for one, who would go through all that Double-O training to give it up and become a secretary for M? Can you say stupid?

Just because Bond is a Double-O, it doesn't mean everyone in that building is one as well. There are techs, scientists, secretaries, analysts, bean counters (accountants), security, etc. al. So now she just gives up that specialized training to be a paper pusher. Come on.

In the next post, I give an easy explanation and way this could've been worked out.

All they had to do was have Harris tell Bond that she didn’t feel that she was cut out for field work. That seeing him again (even though she was obviously happy that he was still alive) just brought all those memories back to the surface. Have her say that she is going back to the SIS (Standard Intelligence Service). It’s the same place Bond started out. It’s probably where all the Double-O agents started out. Have her realize that she can be useful, an asset. Just not as one out in the field. The end.

----------

Then you have Bond come to M’s office. Have him see a woman leaning over a file cabinet so that both Bond’s and our first view of this person is her butt in a tight, short skirt.

Bond - “Well, hello.”

She pops up. A beautiful woman in her early to mid thirties.

Woman - “Oh, Commander Bond. I’ve been expecting you.”

Bond - “Have you? Lucky me.”

Woman - “Yes. He said you were coming back today.”

Bond – “Did he?”

At this point, we’re not supposed to know that we’re talking about Ralph Fiennes, the new M.

Woman - “Yes. I’d almost forgotten. Things have been so hectic since the move. I’ve just been trying to get organized these last few days. “

Bond - “Yes, I can see that, Miss?”

Woman - “Oh, Moneypenny. Eve Moneypenny.”

She stretches out her hand awkwardly. A little tremble. Bond shakes her hand.

Bond - “Moneypenny. Charmed.”

A buzzer hums.

Moneypenny - “Oh, you can go in now.”

Bond turns on the charm. Their dance begins.

“Bond – “Till we meet again.”

Moneypenny smiles as Bond turns and walks into M’s office.

There you go. While I bought the Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack, I'd still put it third in the Daniel Craig trilogy behind Casino Royale (1) and yes, Quantum of Solace (2), a very underrated Bond film.

Where in the film does it say Eve is a double O? That's right it doesn't. Also what's this Standard Intellegence Service? Double-O's are a section of SIS (MI6).

PS.... It's a good job you didn't write the script, that ending is bad.

Yeah, it's never stated that Eve is a Double-O. Just a field agent.

I don't think Naomie Harris as MonneyPenny is because of Politcal correctness. Some people say that these days anytime a black actor is cast in role previously played or written as a white character. It might be true in some cases but I don't think it was in regards to Skyfall.

The Bond franchise was doing well enough and without complaint in regards to characters races. Naomie was cast because she is a good actress, attractive and had attibutes right for the role. Sam Mendes is from a theatre background and they often do colour blind castings. The same goes for Jeffrey Wright and in regards to Felix its not like its the first time that character has been played by a black actor.

Bonds parents were always wealthy they died in a climbing accident in the French Alps. Poor people probably don't go climbing the French Alps.

Bond does come from money. Skyfall is new to the movie, but in the books he stays with Aunt Charmaine and Uncle Max (till he dies) while going to Eton.

Moneypenny is an South African born British subject (The Moneypenny Diaries), she was white in the previous movies. But Ian made a point of her being African and not even going to England till she is joining the service.

I like the Muse song but I think the theme we got fits the tone of the film so much more. I definitely wouldn't be opposed to Muse for a future film though.

Also, the vocals on Supremacy often sound weirdly like Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington.

My brother didn't like Bond coming from money, either. I just don't see eye to eye with that. Bond likely didn't have as much money as the richest classmates and such and he was orphaned at a young age. Plus, Bond isn't really a rags to riches story. He is a very cultured person who enjoys the higher end fruits on life. I don't think his parents at least being able to afford a house like Skyfall harms the series nor the continuity as hinted at in CR like others do. Even the rich have degrees of rich.

Yeah James was rich. Not super rich, his schooling at Eton was paid for by the government because of his father and uncle's distinguished service. But this is a guy who can walk onto any private golf course in Scotland and get a tee time (GF novel). There is also evidence of his whole extended family being very rich (his uncles on his mother's side owning the huge estate in Corsica {Blood Fever}) or summering in Mexico with the family of multimillionaires (Hurricane Gold), or the fact that his first car was his father's Bentley Blower.

Precisely.

This

Bonds background never bothered me.

If you want a working class spy read or watch the Harry Palmer books and movies.

It's pretty clear that some people here have no clue regarding Bond mythology. Anyway, some of you may find the link below interesting.

Dench's M during the Brosnan era was, Barbara Mawdsley and her M during the Craig era was, Olivia Mansfield.

Wow, someone who knows the differences in M.

There are many more examples I could dig up on how well off he was, though at Eton he was just a kid running around with Pritpal and his other buds getting in trouble. This kid has seen the world, in the 1930's a kid from Scotland intimately knowing Mexico, the Caribbean, Italy, Corsica, archaeological digs all over the world with his aunt Charmaine, etc etc. It's a big deal, steam ship travel.

I have a sudden urge to re-read Higson's novels.

im really glad chicken scratch is allowed in this thread again, love reading your posts mate

Your welcome.

The Higsons are always fun to reread. He drops such insane hints that if you follow close it will blow your mind. Like Red Grant's dad in Silverfin as a circus strongman.

For me, I'm always the Gardner books too. More, bigger books.

ive only read a few gardner ones, I got the limited edition boxset of 5 of them last christmas need to finish the last two.... then Im gonna try and finish off Flemmings - think I got up to from russia with love

is young bond worth a read?
