James Bond In Skyfall - Part 8

Hmm more Mathis would definitely go a long way, the character and Bond work well together.
I never got why they didn't have Fields use her full name? Strawberry Feilds is delightful :hehe:

I was fine with the amount of screentime Mathis got, but he never should've been killed off. Even Leiter was a glorified cameo in QoS, so I was ok. I needed more Camille and definitely more Fields.

Also, do I say "Mathis's death" or "Mathis' death"? I think the lack of apostrophe in the latter example is only used in plural?

"I don't think the dead care about Vengence."

That's one of the better lines of the series.

Mathis' death Gia. That's how my twisted Australian English does it.

I still scratch my head at why they killed Mathis, perhaps they wanted to sever all CR ties or something, but it seems like a waste of a great character/actor.

It really did have some great lines - my personal fav is still when Camille first rocks up in the car and says get in, Bond looks around briefly and just says "Alright" the way he delivers it though is brilliant

That whole scene is full of little gems. His reaction to when he opens the briefcase, how he takes the bike.

It is a great line, but it was so played out by the time I saw the movie because I watched the trailer like 300 times.

M also has a lot of very fine dialogue in the film.

It was a f**kin' gimmick to make us suddenly care. It was out of nowhere and not in a good way.

I thought it was quite effective. While I love the character, I think his death served a purpose. With him and Fields, Bond is building up a body count in his search for vengeance. Yes he is doing his job, but the way he is going about it in such a way that people are dying because of him.

If Bond didn't ask for Mathis' help, he'd be alive. If Fields hadn't had to pick Bond up, she'd be alive.

When Greene tells him he lost another one, I think it finally clicked for him. If it hadn't, Camille would probably be dead as well.

One more thing I loved about QoS was that Bond and M were communicating often (even moreso than in CR), unlike other films where he gets briefed by him/her and then it's all Bond. The SF subplot with them has been built well enough because of that and we should be getting a nice payoff.

I don't think it was out of nowhere. Bond got careless, caring too much about his lead and lift Mathis and Fields behind at the party. We saw the results of Bond's inability to see past his revenge.

While all this is true, I think they should've built up their friendship more. I mean, they spent 4-5 scenes as colleagues in CR, the rest as "enemies" and very few scenes in QoS as friends. Should've died in SF. I get that would lessen the impact of the whole "dangerous methods", but I needed more for his death to resonate.

Agree. Her reaction to the "Dead end" line is classic.

There are only a few more badass Bond moments since '62 than him taking the bike.

"That wasn't very nice."

"You were suppose to shoot her."

"Well I missed."

Plus, QoS had the most Barrified soundtrack after Barry left the series.

I can see your point. One reason I think it is effective however is also because he gets Bond so well. Yes, not a lot of time together in the real world context, but quite a bit in the films and in that time he shows a real understanding of James.

Mathis also knows what his decision means. He knows the risk, but does it anyways. Because he understands Bond and his pain and Bond is young, while he is old.

"I found this*gestures to an ashtray* and half a dozen other Christmas presents I'd bought him laying around his apartment."
"I don't think he smoked.". :lmao:

I think they're in a bit of a conundrum with Mr.White going forward.

I don't think they spent much time together in-universe. They met at the casino and then as friends after the villa scene in QoS. I think real time and in-universe time are pretty close in this case.

The only thing that kinda fleshes out the theme/subplot you suggested is their great chemistry. Every time they conversed I bought anything they had to say, as well as the context.

Have them mention he got offed like Greene due to the Opera incident. Easy and won't hurt continuity.

The actor hated working on QoS or something, right?

I see your point, but I see them as a pair of kindred spirits. The appreciation was there from their first meeting.

He did say something oddly nasty, but then later on said it was a joke. It was weird.

That's true, but I think their acting and, again, chemistry contributed more to that than the script itself, even in CR.

Well they already filmed a death scene. They could always just use it. Think they should have just ended Quantum of Solace with it like they originally intended.
