James Bond In Skyfall - Part 9

I still remember the articles that summer in all the newspapers. Bond versus Bond and all that. Turned out the real Bond movie did better than NSNA.

The first Bond film I saw in theaters was Tommorow Never Dies.
The first for me was Die Another Day. I went with my mate and our mothers.

We were both uncomfortable with the sex scene between Bond and Jinx. I tried covering my mother's eyes :D

That would be Octopussy - that's the one that came out the same year as Never Say Never Again.

In that case I remember them actually casting James Brolin as Bond before the NSNA announcement. Broccoli, correctly in my estimation, thought that they couldn't dare risk a new actor against Connery so they paid a ton to get Moore back.

Here's Brolin in Octopussy with Vijay Amritraj.

It was a good instinct, and turned out well. If my memory serves me, Octopussy did better at the box office, but it's also, IMO, a far better Bond movie.

No doubt. I think Octopussy is the most underrated film in the franchise. Most people seem to hate it, but it is a lot of fun and it just misses my top ten Bond films. It is certainly the most action oriented of the Moore films, almost more like an Indiana Jones film than a James Bond film. It isn't flawless and there are couple of really silly moments like the Tarzan yell, but it is certainly enjoyable.

Never Say Never Again was terrible.

I'm with you, I've always liked Octopussy. It's silly, it's over the top, but I have a good time with it. It goes too far at certain moments, but it's fun, my second favorite Moore movie behind The Spy Who Loved Me and probably just outside my top ten. I just started rewatching the whole series, so I'm curious whether my thoughts on any of them will change. Probably not, but my rankings might.

I thought I was the only person who enjoyed Octopussy. Its probably my third favorite Moore Bond film and Octopussy was Moore's best love interest. It helped that she looked age appropriate.

True, though I'm talking more about Ian Fleming's commissioned sketch of Bond than the inspirations for Bond. The drawing is what Fleming imagined what Bond would actually look like.

Whoa! The resemblance is really remarkable and pretty much unmatched by any of the other actors, no wonder Cubby Broccoli offered the role to Dalton many times through the years.

Yep. Dalton pretty much is Ian Fleming's Bond.

And Octopussy, though I don't think it's that good because many stupid moments ruin it, it's not a movie I dislike. It's enjoyable, and way, way better than Never Say Never Again.

And please vote for me against Sawyer in the Deathmatch. It will only take 5 seconds.

So when we can expect the director and writer for Bond 24?

Hopefully soon but not too soon.
The problems with MGM actually worked in favor for Skyfall because the producers and Mendes could basically take their time working out a proper script.
We all know that the Bond crew has basically stayed the same for so long so it's not a problem that they can't make their deadlines. It's the script that needs to be worked upon.

Casino Royale had the advantage of A) being based on the book and B) also having enough time spent on the script.
QoS was a mess though. To this day i just don't understand why the producers and Sony were so focused on releasing the movie in Nov 2008 knowing that the story wasn't ready.

With Craig doing at least 2 more and with SF looking like it's going to be a sure fire winner, I want Mendes to return to at least do Bond 24.

Apologies if this has been posted before, but whilst i appreciate that Adele will probably make a very good Bond theme, Muse's new track Supremacy is made for Bond. I absolutely love this trailer i found on youtube with it.

It has been posted before, but I agree so much.

I love Muse but Surpremacy is a bit run of the mill for them.

Still, Supremacy is less run of the mill for Bond, methinks. Which is what matter when it comes to SF.

So is Adele the first British artist to perform the theme song since Duran Duran did it way back in 1985?

Apparently the PTS will be [blackout]11[/blackout] minutes long

I would like to see some stability back in the director's chair. They haven't had it since Licence to Kill and it shows with the quality varying wildly from film to film since then. I don't think it is any coincidence that by far the two best films since then were the two done by Martin Campbell. I'd like to see them get a good director and keep him for two or three films like in the old days.

I read a lengthy interview with Barbara Broccoli in a French movie magazine, where she said that she and fellow producer Michael Wilson are adamant about not picking the same director twice in a row.

So the next one probably won't be directed by Sam Mendes, but that doesn't mean he won't ever return.

What's wrong with one director helming many consecutive Bond sequels? It gave a wonderful aesthetic cohesion to Terrence Young's batch of classic films. Even something as narratively bonded as Casino Royal and QOS felt distant because of the wild disparity in aesthetics caused by a different director and crew.

That looks like a spoof movie with James Brolin in there, especially in that suit. Something about his expression makes it seem like he might play it deadpan like Leslie Nielsen in The Naked Gun movies. I know he probably wouldn't (there are those Brolin auditions online somewhere) but the above pic gives that impression to me.
