If Superman was anywhere near as popular as you say he is then SR's opening weekend numbers should have been on or above the level of Spider-Man 1, ie - $114m US (which it achieved while not being a sequel to a great film). But SR opened to $52m. People weren't interested in seeing a Superman movie because he isn't popular & hasn't been in a long time.
People wouldn't go see a crap film, you say? - Spidey 3's opening weekend # was $151m, and it's considered substantially worse than SR.
Most iconic/well known does not equal most popular.
Once more, people will watch a sequel from a great CBM, as I gave for example...Spider-Man 2 -> Spider-Man 3, Iron Man -> Iron Man 2.
And...yah, I'd have to say Superman Returns was worse than Spider-Man 3. At least Spider-Man 3 had potential.
Based on what? The $391m WW total of the characters last film?
If SR is as bad as you're saying then that's only going to work against MoS, as it worked against BB & XFC & TASM & TIH.
It could hit like IM did, but I think more likely MoS will have to lay the groundwork (as in be a really good film) while doing modest enough numbers (500ish) before sequels go on to making $800m+.
Lol, you're basing it on the fact that an awful Superman film didn't make that much, really? In that case, I'm surprised Batman Begins did better than Batman & Robin with your logic. And as I said, with the name of Christopher Nolan being plastered everywhere, that will only but benefit Man of Steel.
I'd agree only for the huge weak spot it has in a critical part of the machine - "Screenplay by David Goyer".
His screenplay didn't hurt Batman Begins much. Plus, if the rumor is true of Jonathan Nolan having time to work on the script as well, I don't see it being the weak spot. Just another Nolan polishing up Goyer's work.
