It's funny as I was thinking that the look of the movies Harley was like Miley Quinn in style compared to the version I like.

Using the Joker character to hold up a mirror to these youngsters who feel the need to have their feelings and emotions tattood on themselves.

Yea, my theory on tattoos: They are not self-referential, causality is "tattoos -> Joker", not "Joker -> tattoos". They call him Joker because he's a guy who for whatever reason likes a joker related stuff. He has tattooed them on his body, his car has this HAHAHA registration plate, etc., that's why they call him Joker in this version of DC universe.

I just hope Ayer & co. put a lot of effort into developing this version of Joker so he does feel complex and believable. They need to pay attention to every detail, like I still believe a slick narcissistic ego-maniac like him would have his lipstick applied perfectly, not negligently like you can see in those photos...

Frankly, I think writers are taking things a bit too far with the character nowadays. They keep trying to push this character to such extremes that he's honestly just coming across as demented. He's not nearly as refined.

There needs to be a better balance, and the truly horrific acts need to be fewer and farther between. Otherwise they don't land as great of an impact. Would anybody be shocked by Snyder's Joker beating Jason Todd to death? I hardly think so. It'd be pretty par for the course with that particular interpretation of the character.

A playful mischievous clown that has periodic outbursts of psychotic, murderous rage is infinitely more compelling to me. It gives him more layers as a character, rather than him simply being a platform for writers to outdo each other in seeing who can make him do the most heinous things.

This is clearly right, but I think the DCU's swing toward a distinctly "teen" mindset is a deliberate attempt to target the optimum demographic as measured by longevity of custom and disposable income. I remember being fourteen, and I don't mean to patronise any younger Hypsters when I say that the comics, movies, videogames etc that I liked best were those with lots of bloody violence and lots of scantily clad women. I think it stems from a need to explore themes that are socially forbidden to youngsters.
