I believe they were taking the point of view from 'The Killing Joke':

His scars had nothing to do with any of the stories he mentioned. If he did, they would've all be similar but they weren't.

I think he did do the scars himself, but he blames them on people in his past for driving him over the edge. So instead he makes it seem like they were the ones who gave him the scars.

i think that the first story was how he got the scars on his face. i think that the second story is how emotionally scared he is cause he says his wife left him because of how he looked or something like that. that would be enough to drive some men crazy

I honestly think it was mob-related. I'm sure he was probably ****ed up in the first place but it does make a lot of sense. It would be motivation to mess with the mafia first.

The first yarn with Gambol I liked more because he was a cobra ready to strike but the second one to Rachel was good too. I'm glad they subtlely used "The Killing Joke" in both circumstances. :-D

but every time he started telling his stories, he kept looking up...it was all improv

I believe the two stories were fake, and that speaks LENGTHS about the character.

I mean, he looks for the vulnerable spots in people to sink into. He wants to disturb them, he wants to have fun with it. What better way to tell these insane stories that could almost make you understand and feel bad for the guy, and then come to the realization that it was all a random joke. There is no pattern, there is no message of help he is trying to send across with them...there is only him and what he picks to say each time.

Both stories were just set up for jokes IMO...especially the last one about his wife. He's just crazy...I'm leaving it at that. I'd rather not know how he got them.

he says "go back to ripping off mob dealers?" to Batman in the interrogation scene.. what he has on his face, apart from a Chelsea Grin/Glasgow Smile are called "snitch cuts"/"snitch smile". It's a form of punishment given to those who rip off/lie/snitch on mafia crime families. The fact that he lies throughout the whole move shows that he has trouble with the truth and it seems like a family caught him out and punished him

I don't think so. I think he was referring to the earlier scenes in the film, like when he stole $68 million from the mob in the first sequence of the movie.

After seeing it three times--go ahead, be jealous--I really think the scars were somehow given to him by dogs.
There's just so much dog imagery in the movie, so many lines about dogs, allusions to dogs. Even in the end, he's using three dogs.
Just my theory, but I think dogs scarred him.
