Loeb & Cho's New Ultimates

it's more like saying if I put stop & shop brand cola in you're coke bottle you wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but if you drank the brand soda from the brand bottle you'd say it taste like ****.

No, if we use a drink analysis it'd be like putting piss in a coke bottle and expecting me not to know the difference.

Maybe your taste is so bad, or you just blindly enjoy things so much, that you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference, but I and the comic fan friends that I have in real life CERTAINLY would have. Even without the name I would have known that without a doubt it was either not millar or he was high or incredibly drunk.

All I'm saying is, if you liked Ults 3 fine, but don't go saying it was even remotely difficult to tell that it was a whole new writer that took it over, because most people that have read 1,2, and 3 (even those who wasted their money it) could easily tell the difference based on the plotting and dialogue alone. Vastly vastly different.

As for this Ultimates 4, the art is a big step up from Ults 3 but with Loeb still doing the writing I give it a 1 in 50 chance of still sucking hardcore. At this point Loeb's been so consistently bad for a while now that even if the first issue or 2 is amazing I refuse to buy them until the whole arc is out and, if it is good enough then I'll buy the tpb.

why did you take 2 posts to say that and why do you insult people to try to get your point across? You have no idea what my tasted are and I never even said I like the Ultimates 3 I think its ok. it's someone else's take on the characters. sorry if you disagree but I doubt after Millar read Ultimates 3 scripts he thought "what a piece of sh**" and marvel obviously believes in him writing this series. so just cause a lot of people on message boards complain about Jeff Loeb who used to be a really good writer and condemn him doesn't mean he can't go on and write something new that is good.

Not at all my point. My point was that it is incredibly easy to tell that Ults 1 and 2 were written by someone different Ults 3, as opposed to your assertion to the contrary.

And, while it's possible that Loeb will go on to write something good, at this point that seems highly HIGHLY unlikely.

You are right though, I was unnecessarily insulting in a couple of posts. My apologies, I'm sorry about that.

Loeb's already used all his lifelines. i dont think people have faith in him anymore. I gave him the benefit of the doubt with Ultimates 3 cause the art looked nice and look what happened. His Wolverine arc was plain bad ( a mystic sword that nullifies the healing factor? Really? pfff....), His Fallen Son story was nothing special (although the funeral issue wasnt too bad), Onslaught Reborn...self-explanatory, Hulk...WTF?? Ultimates 3...bad bad bad, and Ultimatum...really bad bad bad. I think we can pretty much foresee what Loeb's writing qualities are now. Its time for him to retire.

I kinda like the twist on Thor's role. Cho's art looks great too.

I totally agree except for I enjoyed the Fallen Son mini, but maybe I'm in the minority on that.

Yea, so far I really haven't liked Loeb's work for Marvel, which saddens me since I loved loved loved his work on Superman/Batman....that was just awesome writing.

The sales numbers would beg to differ. Loeb gets these high-profile assignments for a reason, and that reason is that people buy his s***. Remember: everybody on every comic-related message board in the world is still just a minority of the general comic-buying audience.

Yes, remember: Not everyone goes on a comicbook forum, and spends hours worth of time discussing the medium.

But its not just people on forums, if you look at at any review for loeb's comics (ign, CBR...) they all give him bad reviews. So its obviously not just a case of mad fanboys ranting for no reason, obviously there's a general consensus that loeb's writing is bad. The only reason loeb sells well is because people like the artists he works with. I almost bought ultimatum 1 cause i love david finch's art.

I've seen reviews that praise Loeb's Hulk for being silly, uncomplicated fun.

Magneto simply took it from him. Didn't you know. It's not like the hammer was mystical in nature or anything, so Magneto simply used his power on the metallic minerals in the hammer and controlled it. Those Asgardians are nothing compared to mutants after all.

.... Loeb needs to die.

Yeah. One of the many reasons i stopped reading Ultimates is because that Universe's Thor is such a creampuff...

All i see is a big-assed sword.

On that big pic, if you scroll further to the side and avoid the boobs, and look closely, you can see Thor, slashing at somebody with a hammer, and an axe. (That was not a hammer). My moneys on that being the ultimate blood axe. Or whatever.

Oh, ok. I see it now.

Loeb has one more chance with me, and that chance is the ending of Ultimatum. As horrible as it is I'm giving Loeb the benefit of the doubt, if the ending doesn't somehow explain or justify all the crazy and crapiness then I'm through with the guy and anything he does.

I use to really like him too; his stuff with Tim Sale was always great. Spider-Man: Blue, Batman: The Long Halloween. Great stuff, Loeb has departed so far from that work, it's really sad.

But the title for this "New Ultimates" C'mon... he could have done better than that. His next story will probably be called "Ultimates Disassembled" and after that “Ultimates: Unknown Incursion” which will lead into “Ultimates: Evil Dominance”. Given his characterization of Thor, Loeb may be trying to turn the Ultimate U into the 616 U.

I remember reading an interview with Loeb while he working on Ultimatum and at some point he said something like, “Bendis is currently making my life miserable with his notes”. Bendis was probably trying to tell the guy to stop messing with the characters him and Millar worked hard to create.

Isn't there a character namd Blood Axe? Maybe Ultimate Thor can get one to serve as his page.

Don't know, don't care. The Ultimate Universe is as dead to me as Spider-Man.

That's hilarious, considering what Bendis and Millar have done to plenty of characters in 616 that other creators "worked hard to create". Turnabout's a b****. :o
