Man...I feel like this is Guardians of the Galaxy all over again, in that I really didn't like this movie in spite of the overwhelmingly positive response from...everyone else. It did absolutely nothing for me, and I'm almost shell-shocked about it, because I went into this ready to love the hell out of it.
This movie came across as unbelievably self-indulgent to me, as if Mangold did his best to repeatedly hammer home the bleak sentimentality and finality of it all. Just didn't feel earned to me. Speaking of which, all of the more poignant, emotional beats didn't land for me either, felt like he was relying on assumed (rather than earned) empathy the whole way through. The story did the movie no favors at all either; felt like The Wolverine 2.0 in that regard, and even the fights, for as violent and visceral as they were, were completely uninteresting to me. Jackman killed the role as always, but that's about where the positives begin and end for me.
Like I said before, I'm pretty taken aback by just how much I didn't like this film, but for what it's worth, I'm glad that we've finally got a Wolverine film that most people love. Wish I agreed myself, is all.
