I am seeing it again Wednesday for sure, but I actually think I will struggle with the wait.

Logan was great, much due to the great performances from Jackman, Stewart and Keen. The movie is carried almost completely on the three main characters and it's a very worthy send off for Logan and Xavier, while I was almost surprised at how good X-23 was. Sure, she got to be pretty emotionless for a lot of it, but she nailed it when she had to.

It was satisfying to see Wolverine get to be really violent, although that aspect is just some icing and not really what makes the movie. I'm glad we also got to see him be his old self for just a little while near the end, which was the one time the movie really got me pumped.

On the negative side the Wolverine clone felt uninspired. It didn't help at all to visualize Logan's own struggle and it was just a far lesser version of Wolverine vs Sabertooth. No emotions between the fighters and clone fighting is generally not that dynamic.

The other villains didn't really make that much of an impact, but I kind of like that since that gave all the spotlight to the heroes. It's those kind of superhero movies that have gotten the heroes best most of the times and that's why this movie shines.

There are some other flaws, like that it felt weird that the mutant kids just ran and didn't really try to help each other much when someone fell, but as usual it's the case where a good movie can make those speed bumps feel fairly comfortable, where a poor movie would have made those annoying.

It's emotional, with a lot of downers, but it's very satisfying.

I felt similar with X24. I would have preferred that Sabretooth had been included instead of Pierce and the clone. He could have decided to go back to working for the X program, he would heal better than Logan since he doesn't have metal in his body, and he would have a personal connection that X24 lacked.

Just got back from my second viewing and I think I liked it even more than the first, even though I knew what was coming the whole thing worked, X-24 is still not a great character choice to use but his reveal scene is still brutal and shocking and makes an impact on the events in a major way.

The performances of the main cast are just note perfect and there were little scenes that I didnt realise the first time were really standouts,[BLACKOUT] like when Logan and X23 are in the car together after Logan gets out the doctors[/BLACKOUT], its a great character moment for both of them and really sells their relationship to each other.

I am sure there will be other great comic book movies this year but nothing will quite be like this, brutal, shocking but with real heart at the same time and that ending man, it hit hard second time round with a full theater. It dared to be different and its imperfections can be accepted a whole lot more for it and they are few anyway and insignificant in a lot of ways for what you get from Hugh, Stewart, Keen, Merchant and Holbrook.

9.2/10

I want to start this off with saying thank you Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart for the last 17 years. It's been an amazing ride.

Logan is extremely awesome and while there is a few things in the story of the movie I wasn't a big fan of, Hugh's performance more than made up for it. I don't think he's ever seemed more Wolverine than in Logan. The gore, the action and the emotions really make this film something special and a comic book movie we'll be talking about for years.

8/10 for me.

My review/ramblings

Absolutely loved it. This is the Wolverine we've been waiting for ever since the first X-Men film 17 years ago. James Mangold finally perfected what he's been trying to do on The Wolverine and the R rating is what was desperately needed. This is a modern day superhero western, it's in love with that concept and it fully delivers on everything it promises. And while this says "superhero movie", Mangold made it with the same care as Cop Land and 3:10 to Yuma. This is by far one of the best performances Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart has done in their careers. This movie gets the characters right and added a much needed dimension to them. Whether or not you've been following these characters for years, you are invested with them in this and their journey. As for Dafne Keen, she was the breakout star of the movie. Every time she's on, you can't wait to see what she does next. The action was f***in incredible, there's more than the trailers made you believe and it's brutal. As for the story, it's got its interesting surprises towards the middle and the end, but I thought this was a very solid Wolverine story. This has something not a whole lot of superhero movies have achieved correctly, a proper fulfilling close to a story.
9.5/10

The part that annoyed me the most was how good condition those comics were, why didn't she cgc that s**t? Logan handling the comics like he did would probably lower the score but oh well.

This is the first comic book film to make me tear up. Excellent film.

9.5/10

It got an A- Cinema Score.

X2, DOFP, and Deadpool remain the only X Films with an A score.

So it got the same Cinema score as Apocalypse.

It is such a special comic book film, in the same mold of The Dark Knight and Deadpool. It will be forever remembered and Hugh gave it his all.

What an incredible film. James Mangold really brought the weight of 17 years of our experience with these characters, largely played by these actors to bear to tell a powerful story.
Patrick Stewart is one of my favorite actors, who I have seen turn in many great performances but even so I was caught of guard by how good he was here, how honest this portrayal of a man at the end of his life was. Any performance this honest about the struggle of aging and facing a failing body and mind would be sad but again there is the weight of familiarity here. This is the same character we have seen be so stately and so completely in control in the past, now brought to this.

There is a similar dynamic with Logan himself. This is by far the best performance I've seen from Hugh Jackman. Wolverine has always been a tortured, conflicted character but Jackman really sells the character as a man finally at the end of his rope.

The R rating finally sets free the cinematic potential of an angry man with blades on his hands. Its not just a matter of the blood, of which there is a lot but rather the impact. I've spent a fairly large portion of my movie-watching life with Hugh Jackman slicing through swat teams and the like but never has a single hit ever had the sheer impact of the stabs and slices in this film. There is of course the fact that he mostly aims directly for foreheads but it is more that they sell the force of it all. I honestly thing it has more to do with sound design than blood.

But then of course there is the blood and flying bits.

I went to an 8:30pm screening tonight. It was a packed house. I was surprised how many people brought their children. Very young children. Many 6 year olds

20 minutes, 37 headstabs, 2 decapitations and a flash of boobs later the families began to leave one by one. Really I think they were fine with Logan mauling car thieves but I think they drew a line at the little girl killing people. As soon as Lara started her first rampage, a little boy a few seats down from me was on the verge of tears. His family left the theater a few minutes later.

I don't know if the marketing didn't make it clear that the film was R rated or what that actually meant or what. Even without the blood, this simply wouldn't be a very exciting movie for a kid.

As to X-24: I don't think the film quite sold the idea enough but the film did describe him as a creature "without a soul." Xavier constantly pushes Logan to allow himself to feel love, to enjoy the company of others and sense of home. Logan struggles with allowing people to get close to him because he has lost so many people, so many things ripped away. X-24 is a vision of what Logan would truly be like if he was stripped down to only rage. That's the contrast and how that character feeds into the themes. There's a degree to which you don't really get enough of him to sell it though.

It is subltly threaded throughout and then finally described at the end but I did like the idea of the conspiracy to vaccinate against mutation through tampering with the food products.

I thought it was good I gave it an 8.
Made me a bit upset since its too little too late, Wolverine movies should have been like this from the start. They finally get it right but Jackman is done.

I took points off because I didn't care for the villains.

People don't actually research movies before they go to know the source material. They think "Oh comic book character its okay for my kid" They think because the character is in video games and cartoons that he is okay. Some casual fans don't know anything about this stuff they just want to be in the know.

The villains were the weakest. I excepted more from Donald Fierce.

Yeah none of the villains did it for me. I think they knew the movie was about this being the last Jackman Wolverine movie and last Stewart as Charles. They didn't really think they needed bad ass villains, but I wish we had one in this.

I would have preferred to see Omega Red than X-24. Claws versus claws is just old to me.

I wonder which 7 of the xmen Xavier killed with his seizure.

Could be Storm, Jean, Beast, Colossus and Cyclops. But don't worry they will appear in Supernova and Colossus in DeadpooII so it doesn't matter. Fox's logic.

I loved Donald Pierce. It wasn't his film and he existed to move the protagonists from A to B, so I don't care that we didn't get a lot out of him. Boyd did a great job with the role, he was hateable as ****.

Agreed Holbrook is a great actor and put so much character into Pierce even if he did get sidetracked towards the end for Rice. His first scene with Logan in the Limo is unnerving and slimey. To hold his own with the likes of Hugh and Stewart on screen was impressive in itself.

It really made his last moments some of the most satisfactory among CBM villains. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

To be frank, I think many actors would get chewed up by Richard E. Grant. The man was charmingly evil. Boyd's Pierce was just a nasty SOB. Holbrook mentioned not ever reading a comic book, but thankfully Jim's read the comics, because his Donald Pierce was every bit the crazy cybernetic ***hole I remember him to be Uncanny X-Men #251.

Plus, his mechanical arm rocked. It was a great, comic book faithful aesthetic. The less is more approach worked that way.

Wouldn't it be awesome if there were some kind of rating system that could warn parents about the content of movies ahead of time? It'd be really cool if they put that rating at the end of trailers and TV spots or even at the bottom of every poster. What a world that would be.
