I still plan on seeing it, especially as someone mentioned that they use The William Tell Overture during the last 15 minutes. I'll make my own mind up if it is a turd or not.

what, Lone Ranger??

At lunch with my co-workers and two of them have been trying to see steel for the past two weeks and before my very eyes they decided to wait for it on DVD.
Bummer :(

Same with my older brother.

I think only the grandmothers hate MOS, because it has 'too much' action and not enough crying scenes. And grandmothers sure are grumpy when they don't get their way. Them grannies are doomed, because MOS2 I suspect will be just as action-packed, as sequels usually are.

My mom's a grandmother and she loved Man of Steel. And she usually never even goes to superhero movies.

Then your task should be to explain why they need to see it in the theaters. Have you tried begging, followed by a pouty bottom lip and tearful eyes yet??

you think that's still possible??

seems like after this weekend, it will slow way down......

There is a very good chance that it will. The first Ironman and ASM both made an additional 30 mil plus after their third week. Except of IM1 having a better second week (no comp) it and MoS having been going pretty evenly on the daily earnings and MoS has actually out paced it by 25 million and is showing comparable holds. Most movies seem to have measurable boxoffice for 16 weeks leaving MoS 12 more weeks to go.

Something to think about is that while fans of the movie have made repeat viewings the GA audience has had fresh movies to choose from every week. It is likely that MoS will start getting GA repeat business when the herd thins a bit. That might be what is helping it maintain audience as some of the new "big hitters' have underperformed (LR and WHD)

So, 300 plus is a pretty safe bet.

would be interesting to see the OS total after this weekend; hoping for a healthy bump again .. seeing it for a 3rd time tmorrow in 3D again

This is brilliant. I posted something very similar to this way back before the movie came out. Anything over 600M WW, which is already locked, and you're considered the third best start to a franchise in CBM history (Behind SM1 and TASM) unless it passes 750M then it'd be second.

The film is successful, numbers don't lie. But it's not as successful as a lot of people predicted. However, that's relative. Around 45% of the people who voted on the poll predicted 800M or greater for the movie. The BO expectations were enormous for a reboot. If the predictions were a bit more modest all around, the money it's making right now would have seemed like a lot more.

Fact is fact though, it's making money. Just not to TSHHB predictions.

In that comparison of MoS to films like TIH, C:TFA, etc etc ...... one big difference is the amount of money spent to make the film. MoS was budgeted like a summer blockbuster. I wouldn't say it has performed like one. It has however, performed well enough.

Budgets of $150 million and $140 million aren't chump change. Marvel was banking on TIH and Cap being huge too.

Very good for MoS, it needed to be about $260M total to keep pace for $300M domestic. Needs to pull in about $17M through next Thursday.

You're seriously going to compare Caps budget to MoS? LULZ.

If they wanted Cap to have a chance at being a "huge" bank, they would've upped the budget. We're talking almost 100 million difference between Cap and MoS.

Marvel was more concerned with profitability and moreseo "good enough" to get the franchise over to The Avengers.

So is it totally out of IMAX theaters now? I'm ashamed to admit that although I've seen it 9 times already, I still didn't get to see it in IMAX. The Grove in Los Angeles is right next to my work, so it was real easy for me to find a time to go and see it again, ( and again and again....hence the 9 visits lol! Unfortunately that Pacific theater doesn't have IMAX (they really need to add one IMO) So Universal city walk is the closest and that's a zoo in the evening and weekends:-(

Which is one reason why I think Marvel's films are enjoyable but nothing "special" and truly great. Marvel seemed more interested with churning out a film(s) that was decent enough quality to get to Avengers rather than focus on the film itself.
Then again Avengers was a great film, safe to say they got exactly what they wanted and they had the turnout they were looking for.

wouldn't know .. IMAX withdrew from South Africa in 2010 .. didn't make enough money to make it viable, so the best we have are large multiplex screens .. the 2D screenings here are crap because they are regulated to smaller screens with crap accompanying sound .. so i'll see it tmorrow on the large 3D screen again .. ah well

Cap's a tough sell worldwide though. I can understand their apprehension about throwing $200+ million at it.

Thor was also a tricky property. They just weren't going to go crazy with the budgets on these films. They had to make due and get to the Avengers which will serve as a greater marketing tool for all the individual tentpoles. Both T:TDW and C:TWS got budget upgrades compared to the first films. I myself cannot wait to see T:TDW. I am so hyped for it, it's not even funny.

i think it'll be tight, but very possible .. needs about $12m this weekend IMO

I specifically only compared it to the two movies I listed because the box office performance was comparable in estimating final numbers.

The comparison you bring up would be on actual earnings which is a big sticky mess based on what the studios actually spend and what they say they spend. I'm not qualified to wade into that mess if I were, I would probably be to busy to spend so much time lurking on super hero forums.

But to make some raw comparison, CA: TFA cost 140 m and earned 368 earning 228 mil over budget. Of course that is a raw number and doesn't include marketing etc.

MoS cost 225 and is at 528 (not counting todays updates) putting it at a raw 303 earning over production budget.

Given that MoS has only been out three weeks and both films were available in 3d, MoS box is pretty impressive.

Did it disappoint those who wanted a Billion, yep, but, it is doing just fine.

The holiday boost has really helped the movie, $12M this weekend is doable. And it should definitely pull in around $5M from Mon-Thurs.

Oh I completely agree. I mean **** Disney spent 250 million on Lone Ranger, a franchise and character that isn't well know to this generation at all. Safe to say MARVEL had some common sense in not giving a 200 million dollar budget to Cap.
That being said I feel like MARVEl rushed through Cap and Thor and even IM2 a bit to get to Avengers and in turn, they weren't truly great and amazing films.
I personally feel THOR and IM2 are Marvel's weakest films thus far.

I could care less about THOR 2 tbh. I thought Thor was decent but the new trailer for T2 didn't grab me at all. I hope it's good though.

I don't want this to degrade into semantics.

If you want to label it as impressive that's fine. My argument was it was budgeted as a blockbuster (as pretty much most movies with over a $200 million budget) and it's not performing like one overall. That is not the same as saying the movie is a failure. I've already stated it's performing well-enough.

I would add Cap to that also....I recently rewatched it on Netflix and was amazed at how rushed it was

My personal opinion is that Cap's movie suffered the most from the need to get to The Avengers. I myself would've loved to have gotten at least 2 films minimum and some more material for Weaving's Red Skull. I looked at that character with "Dark Vader-esque" potential.

IM2 I actually liked when I first saw it, but now it's a movie I just don't care to watch. If it's on tv, I'll still flip right past it.

Thor happens to be my favorite standalone of the MCU .... well with TIH 1b. I can't wait to see what Alan Taylor has done with T:TDW. It needed to get dirtied up and I thought the trailer gave a glimpse of that. Plus, there's so much fallout from Odin's decision to use dark energy to send Thor back to Earth that we're about to see in this film.

I haven't seen Cap in forever. I won't try and agree lol. I would have to see it again.
