Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 3

Hmmm.. it's sort of split 50/50 with the 'top critics'... 3 rotten/3 fresh... looks like the 'regular critics' are liking it better...

Under 500 million WW for this movie would be a minor disaster. Given the various revenue streams, the film would still (eventually) make some money for the studios/investors, but you can forget about a sequel or a JL movie or a WW movie etc etc.

Your prediction is 500M and relative to mine, it's low-ball... to you, mine's high-balling it...

Ok, i am done... this is getting tiring...

500M and up to 600M with good word of mouth.

I heard they already made $170M in tie-in deals (toys and what not).. not sure how much of that is 'cash' and how much is 'free/joint promo'... this movie is already guaranteed to be profitable... if you count all revenue streams...

If it can stay in the 70%, then this movie shouldn't be effected by critic scores. What worries me is it's starting off kind of low, and with the studio having the embargo lifted so late, usually that's not a good sign. We don't even have 50 reviews yet and there's already 9 negative, and they don't have the Forbes review counted. The last time I remember this kind of thing happening was Spider-man 3, where we were wondering when it would get it's "certified fresh" rating. Now please don't get me wrong, I don't expect this to be Spider-man 3, but I'm just talking about specifically to the RT meter.

The TOP CRITICS are split 50/50, if you counted Forbes, then it'll be as low as 40%... that is worrying...

The studio are confident in the movie, I highly doubt that was the reason for the embargo.
Plus TASM started off low as well.

Critics ratings notwithstanding, I think Man of Steel will perfom like the first Transformers film which is $300m domestic and $400m overseas so $700m worldwide which is a pretty solid number and one what WB should be happy about (and not the more than $1.3bn one WB exec predicted, crazy!).

:super:

The critics scores are pretty well meaningless in comparison to the Cinemascore or crowd ratings.

As meaningless as we all might agree these things are, a Snyder superman film with a rotten rating isn't going to be doing the performance any favors.

And all the more glaring because Nolan attached his name to that rotten rating which he will surely distance if it surely gets a rotten rating.

Yeah, all the people that think the RT score does not matter are delusional IMO. Almost everyone I know is aware of RT, and regularly look up the RT score for films before going down to the cinema. I've seen people post about RT scores on Facebook for newly released movies as well. And these are all casual fans, the kind that ask whether Superman's ever going to appear in an Avengers film. :yay:

There's definitely precedent for movies doing exceedingly well despite having a rotten rating, but saying that the RT score is immaterial reeks facetiousness.

People wouldnt be saying that RT is meaningless if this was getting TDK/Avengers level praise.

Whedon's hobby Much Ado About Nothing shot in his house and backyard with his friends on a micro-budget has an even higher rating (80% RT) than Man of Steel. Which says a lot about the director of each movies. But then again I never did like Snyder, 300 was ahead of its time but he doesn't have a consistent track record.

Yet they do when it doesn't even approach the (meaningless)TF bashings...
what an odd situation this all is., just saying.

Says more about critics imo.

Says even more about the perverse relationship between critics and the general audience they serve.

Thats not really fair. A small Shakespearan comedy which is purely centered around relationships and dialogue will always be more critic friendly than a big bombastic blockbuster type.

The real credit here is that Whedon put that thing together in a week..lol, i've seem the movie and its pretty great, and i not even into Shakespeare

I don't see why that should be a slight on critics? I've heard someone bring up This is the End getting good reviews as a reason critics are dumb.

Good films come in all stripes, comedies can be great films, indie Shakespeare plays can be as well...

Either way i've had my reservations about snyder for a while. I brought up suckerpunch a little while a go here and that didn't play out too well. I was just hoping he would be reigned in for this film.

I don't know about that. Sure, there is sometimes a certain snobbery to their tastes, but it is no different than criticism in any other field. Should food and drink critics be praising McDonald's, Budweiser, and Costco brand Zinfandel in a box because that is what average joes enjoy? I think it's a little early to start throwing around dismissive arguments about pretension and elitism.

Those are good points.

It's also funny that people very rarely have problems with badly written reviews if the review is praising what these people like. Unless bad reviews from both sides are bashed then it just looks like people that can't handle differing opinions from their own.

We can all agree that low RT ratings is not an encouraging sign for the movie that is supposed to earn mega bucks.

Rotten Tomatoes has always been a reliable source. It's usually in the right ballpark.

This is what I've been trying to say all morning but people just don't understand... Especially with the 1B predictions.
