Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 4

I hope Man of Steel earns enough money to satisfy the WB execs in making a sequel.

as for the 3D, I think studios prefer it (besides the higher ticket prices) since it's impossible to pirate a 3D movie inside a theater. that translate to more people watching it. boost the sales including the DVDs.

If I wanted a to make a big fat trilogy based on an original idea. I'd be hard pressed to get the studio on board considering I'm the only one that want's it at this point.

I was under the impression that WB want's a JLA film. I mean they all but fast tracked that very project for 2015 at one point. Why is it we are under the impression that they need alot of convincing? Honest question.

Whew! Almost missed the record. Nice start.

Possible but that would mean it has to drop only by 40% (from the $125 total) next week.
If they did $55mil next weekend, that would only need to make $20mil between Monday and Thursday.

Nope. You forgot about the daily grosses in between weekends.

Would like to see Malaysia numbers. Robot was so down on the lack of marketing there.

I think this is good news as OS legs for action films tend to be stronger than in the US. I think MOS will not have all that great legs here but the OS market will make up the difference I hope. As I've said repeatedly.

Hey Tobias... back to the forum? Have you seen it yet?

Anyways, you won't believe this.. they finally have displays in the theaters a couple days before opening.. haha.. funniest thing I have ever seen...

But marketing or not, EVERYBODY here knows who superman is, so I guess it sells itself... First weekend is fully booked (for the evening time-slots)...

I can't shake the feeling that other films with lower expectations such as various CBM's would have prevailed in this situation.

Marvin, I think you're exactly right.. I thought about the same thing. Basically because it was Superman, and the hype was so great, the critics tend to be less forgiving. I think if this was any other CBM, or any other movie of any kind, it'll have gotten a fresh... at least 75-85%...

Superman is even bigger like in China than Spiderman. It will break records mark my word. May be able to beat our Ironman 3's total earning in China too.

I don't think so.. IM3 broke China's record by a HUGE margin... the reason? They actually did a joint venture with a local chinese production company and shot a few minutes of footage with top chinese actors... you won't see those scenes, but the chinese audience would. If you had gone to china, you won't recognize the posters because they are actually promoting the local actors in them....

Now, if only WB was as shrewed as Disney in their international marketing.. China is a 100M dollar market.. that's by no means small... i think spending a couple million extra doing some extra footage is money well spent...

I was only $2 million off for my 3-day weekend prediction. :)

Wow.. you really know your stuff... that's within the margin of error.. you're spot on... what's your WW figure?

Exactly!

My PERFECT theater is 3D with D-Box motion seats.

Oh, boy.. i think if this comes out, people would just go watch every movie over and over again.. like going for a ride in Disneyland..

But they need to have really high def Projectors first... the 4K projectors they use are still pretty pixellated... I think it needs at least 16K projectors and movies need to be shot in super high def digital cameras as well, at least 16K.. 35mm film just won't do...

I think the only thing holding back the ultimate experience is that the true IMAX 70mm film can't be used for movies (because to shoot a movie with it would be prohibitively expensive)... need to wait another 10 years for digital cameras/projectors to reach at least 16K or even 32K...

Because in to many situation the 2D screenings are being shut out, especially when it come to IMAX. In many parts of Europe you couldn't see Thor unless you watched it in 3D. And Thor in 3D is nearly unwatchable.

Yeah, I hate that.. in my country, the 2 Imax screens only show 3D.. I think 2D on the imax would be far better... considering we still don't have very high def digital projectors.. (only 4K max, so in passive form, you're only watching 2K for each eye)

Something of note: out of 4,207 venues this movie is playing at 3,357 are 3D (that's over 80%) but only 31% of box office receipts are for 3D version

That along with what happened with the STID 3D sales could be signaling some major changes. Is this the beginning of the end of 3D?

Actually that's not what it means.. it means that in 80% of the locations / cineplexes there are both 2d/3d options... that doesn't mean ALL the screens in those locations are in 3D... chances are there'll still be more screen in 2d compared to 3d... for instance, in a typical cineplex in my country, it has upwards of 10-20 screens.. they are playing Man of Steel in something like 5 screens,.. and maybe only 1 of them would be 3D while the other 4 would be in 2D...

We will see if WOM will carry into next weekend. It will be tough. We'll probably get a better idea during the week though. I could see a 50% drop or more happening hopefully it's less than that which would probably mean it'll have some legs.

Gonna see it this evening in 2D after seeing it in 3D on Thursday. Btw the 3D was really good despite the fact that it was post process. In fact it was better than some 3D films that were actually shot with 3D cameras. But the friends I'm going with today don't like 3D so we are gonna do 2D.

Around $550 - $650M.

thats actually a huge range. 550 would be a minor disaster for WB while 650 would be decent and would probably guarantee a sequel (their announcement that a sequel had been green-lit was meaningless of course).

Checking out my third viewing right now. 2D IMAX this time. Good crowd so far.

Going for a third time in 90 minutes. Still need to do IMAX, and then possibly 3D IMAX. A big part of the fun for me, is going with others who haven't seen it to see their reactions, and kind of vicariously experience it for the first time all over again. if that makes any sense lol!:yay:

The single day grosses for Man Of Steel were $12 million, $44 million, $36.3 million, and $32.7 million.

I have a feeling it's going to drop big next weekend. But lets hope it will be enough for a new DC line of movies.

Going by the drops of GL, this movies first weekdays are looking to be around...

Mon- 11.1
Tue- 10.8
Wed- 8.5
Thur- 8.1

However, I expect this to hold better than GL so closer to $45 million then $40M. For the 2nd weekend I'm gonna go conservative and say around $50 million. That puts it around $220 million after 10 days.

A TON of sense. This is what makes me going back for more, more than anything. I just have this satisfaction of seeing it again and again with different people in the audience. It's a nice feel-good moment for Superman fans to see others there and the reactions that they may have.

Yesterday was cool, though. Made friends with one of the ticket-sellers and we ended up talking comics and all of that. He let me go in for free so that was a nice surprise.:word:

Yes it does, I enjoy doing that as well. :)

Makes total sense. I did that for Kick-Ass, watching people giggle and mumble at the shocking scenes.

It's funny to read people saying "I hope good numbers so there will be a sequel". With a debut of 125m the sequel will be greenlited this evening.

Great start, hopefully it'll hold well into next weekend. Would love to see it reach $350 million.

I predicted around $110-$120 million... I wasn't far off.

Excellent start, just praying now it has some great legs. :yay:

^ Same here. I predicted roughly $110 OW. Looks like it might be that way according to Boxofficemojo

MAN OF STEEL: $71.6M Overseas Total (24 Markets) / $196.6M Global Total. #ManOfSteel

Safe to say MoS is off to a IM, Spiderman like start, techinacally even greater..
Considering those two represented the highest start from scratch starts...I'd say things are going well for a film that not only has to deal with criticim on a pretty odd level but a brand many thought was either done or wasn't relevant any more.

Still see TF money in this films run.
Also sure that just like people doubted him domestically, his international number are going to be impressive and significant.
