Guess I gotta read All-Star and Secret Origin then. Doubt they will win over For All Seasons and Birthright in heart, character and freshness.

Oh yeah.

I just read Secret Origin for the first time as well, and granted while i think it's great too, Birthright does come out in the lead for me.

If a person could successfully take the best parts of those two origin stories, and mold it into one epic story for a film..then DAMN...we'd have one kickass film to watch.

I can only hope that MOS ends up being the definitive origin story for Superman in live action format for the years to come.

I just love on how the two stories, especially Birthright, dived right into the man behind the cape and suit and that we got to see "that character" without losing the basis and true nature of Superman..and damn, if MOS can do that.....then damn.haha

If you're concerned about freshness you could always try Ziploc's Double Zipper Freezer Bags. Keeps it very fresh for a long time. :o

Looks like at least some of the parts from FAS is in MOS, so hopefully it will have the same kind of heart and character as well. I really liked the feeling of good old fashioned local community atmosphere and good neighbourship.
Also, Lana (and possibly others) knew about Clark's secret, which also could create a more tightly knitted community. I would really love it if other smallvillians knew about Clark's secret. Doubt they'll have time to address that though.

Dont know about definitive, but certainly something that can finally put the Donner-verse in the past and shed some much needed new light on the character. Especially in the kick-ass-department. That would be enough for me at the moment.

I think there's going to be elements of many Superman stories in this film and Goyer wrote the introduction for Secret Origins in which he expressed his love for a scene involving young Clark and Jonathan so I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar to that scene.

Yeah, the scene where he finds the ship screams "Secret Origins". Even Smallville got that part right.

Agreed with everything said above. I also wouldn't mind seeing the people of Metropolis stand up for Superman when he's at his most vulnerable moment physically in the climax of the film like how they had done in SO and Birthright. Course not in a Sam Raimi Spider-Man cheesefest type of way..but a more awesome and realistic looking approach.lol

In freshness, yes...sort of. Morrison recycles old, classic storylines from the 40's and 50's for his storyline in ALL STAR...SECRET ORIGINS is kind of all the most classic elements from Superman lore made modern. Kind of a comic book version of SMALLVILLE in a sense. I think BIRTHRIGHT and FOR ALL SEASONS are much better written, and better presentations of Superman as a well rounded character...he's kind of just a godlike icon in ALL STAR, very Golden Age.

Yeah if done right it could be a really cool turning point in how people are reacting to him. Like at first they are afraid, but as they see how much of a beating he's taking too help THEM, they start to realise they should be supporting him.

Agreed; that and it could show people starting to stand up for themselves and give another prime example as to how Superman's character can positively inspire people to take affirmative actions.

Zack Snyder has a different cinematographer and film editor for this film. That may also account for the different look and feel to the trailer as apposed to his other movies. I'm particularly interested in his editor since it's important to weave in all these various plot points in a two and half hour movie while keeping a good pace and not having the movie be too slow.

Judging from what we know (and speculate) I'd say the inspirations of the film have come from elements of Man of Steel Vol.1, Birthright, Secret Origins, Earth One, For All Seasons, All Star Superman, some New 52 stuff (in terms of costume although I know they've toyed with losing the trunks in the past and have used similar past concepts), what else if any?

Actually, the costume designer says that their decision to lose the trunks was not based on the redesign in DC52, but rather that trunks makes him look more human, and they wanted him to look more alien

I just found out about the trailer moments ago and watched it immediately. The trailer is brilliant despite watching it on a ****ti cam. When the trailers are bad, there's almost no hope for a film. With that said, I am unsure how well the film will do. Even with all the changes they are making to Superman they still can't get out from under the shadow of the Donner films by reintroducing characters that were written specifically for those films. Not to mention, the use of Luthor over and over again is getting tiresome.
Last I checked, Otis and Tessmacher aren't in this film, and as *FAR* as I know, they were the only main recurring charcters Donner's Superman had that were created just for it.
And as far as we know, Lex isn't in this either....so....whats your point again?

I still think DC Comics would have had something to say about it

I wish Eve Teschmercer/ Tess Mercer/ Mercy could play a bigger part in the comics.

But what I liked that despite him being presented as Godlike, it showed why he is more than just that.

The scene that always comes to mind is the scene where Superman confronts the girl about to jump off the building. He says something to her that is probably one of the most touching things I've ever read in a comic.

Man I am ordering All Star Supes, For All Seasons, Birthright, Secret Origins and Earth one this weekend. I was really never introduced to Supes because all of my friends had various complaints and I always read Bats and X-men growing up. Also the movies didn't do a whole lot for me. That said I picked up some of the N52 titles and skimmed through Earth One and I really think the character is riveting. Then I saw the comicon footage as well as the trailer in front of Dark Knight Rises and I have to say, gave me goosebumps. So now I am on this dire quest to read some awesome Superman books.

I guess I did read Superman/Batman books years ago when the series was halfway decent and I always enjoyed them. Should have caught on sooner. C'est la vie.

Can anyone recommend some other stellar Superman Trades/GN?

You should get a book called "Superman: Secret Identity". It's about Clark Kent in our real world. It is amazing. Definitely one of the best stories.

Also, get the Alan Moore stories called "Whatever happened to the man of tomorrow?" and "For the man who has everything".

Of course the Alex Ross books "Superman Peace on Earth" and "Kingdom Come"

Other great stories are "Red Son", "Death and Return" saga and "Brainiac" arc by Geoff Johns.

Just read through birthright. Amazing story, and the ending was great!

It is so great to me that just because of a little bit of footage of a Superman film, he's already looking more interesting to people who haven't bothered with him before :)

.

Agree with all your suggestions, but just wanna second this one as it's often overlooked. And IMO it has some of the most beautiful Superman artwork I've ever seen :)

Glad to hear you liked it. Birthright is probably my favourite Superman trade/story. I'm always up for re-reading it.
