I think the only thing a long movie affects are the grosses in a given specific time (weekend gross/daily gross), and not the overall gross (which is certainly more important). The longer the movie, the less showing per theater per day, thus lower weekend/daily grosses. However, I think it's safe to say that MOS isn't even competing for an opening weekend gross record.

A good movie will have strong legs, lower weekend drops, and will make as much as it is supposed to make if it was a shorter movie. Those who weren't able to see the movie during the opening weekend will still see it on the next, or the one after that. Movies like Avengers, Avatar, LOTR, TDK and even Titanic don't get to their total gross in just a short span of time, it's their legs in the box office that got them there (repeat viewing, good word of mouth, etc). I don't really believe the length of the movie will affect whether it will make less money or not.

A run time approaching 2 and a half hours will mean less theaters which will also probably mean less gross.

I don't think record grosses will be a relevant...put it this way it likely won't do Avengers or TDk-like numbers, but if it's really good it should do solid numbers and not be hindered by a 150min runnning time.

I'm not saying a long movie can't do well. But there are always gonna be some casual movie goers that will give up trying to see a movie if they don't get in on the first try. Not everyone is die hard. The more theaters the more it attracts the casuals. Of course movies that are popular can have their life extended at the box office or in some cases have an increase in theater count. However if Superman performs like a regular movie it will need all the theaters it can muster up.

I think you are misunderstanding my original post. More theaters means more money. Not saying it can't do solid numbers. Just that more theaters produce higher gross. And having a long run time means less theaters. Now if having a longer run time means increasing the quality and enjoyment of the film past the shorter run time version than that is a different story. If somehow the longer version is significantly better. But longer is not always better. MoS needs to be just long enough to tell its story.

I think you're misunderstanding if it actually matters that much in this case. And we're not talking about pushing 2:40+. If the movie is comfortably 2:20, it's no so far off from many films that it's going to drastically affect its distribution. And again, we're not looking at a potential record-setting either. Additionally...opposed to some indie or something with a limited theatrical distribution, this is the kind of movie that they would play at any theater chain worth its weight in sand and on multiple screens at larger multiplexes. There'd already be plenty of red flags, creatively, if it's pushing past 2:30.

I am hoping it's tight around 2:10 to 2:20

I think that is a safe and pretty standard length for blockbusters nowadays. I thought TDKR was a little bloated at 2:45.

You are giving 2 numbers here. 2:20 and 2:30. Either way those run times would mean less theaters than a 2 hour movie. And if people don't see any improved significance between the 2 hour cut and the 2:30 cut it will mean less movie tickets sold. And opening day box office builds momentum and draws more audience. It's a superhero movie and will be under the radar and compared with the rest.

Yes we want it to perform like The Avengers but what if its only slightly better than SR. I say keep it tight as well and then give the people more in the sequel. It all depends on what kind of film Snyder has crafted. Will it be strengthened by a shorter cut or a longer run time? I'm sure he will have to present both.

My two cents. I think it will be around 2:20/2:30.

It's hard for me to imagine less running time than that what with the krypton scene(s) that seem like they will be long, the SV stuff, the clark traveling the world stuff, and then the whole confrontation with Zod and company. It could be done in two hours or less I guess, but wouldn't that feel rushed? ugh, I hope not.

I also think if it can make 280/300 mill domestic, WB should turn cartwheels.

Because 2:30 is usually more of a red-flag indicator. And since it's a tentpole action-adventure, it will still get vastly more theaters than the majority of other movies released in a year...even those with running times shorter than 2 hrs. Not to mention 3D and maybe even IMAX. It'll even out just fine. Don't worry about the running time.

It'll most likely be because the movie was only slightly better than SR.

Neither will be a concern unless it actually feels bloated, regardless of length. If it's somehow longer than 2:30, there's probably bigger issues at hand in the actual movie that will affect it much moreso than one or two less late-night/early morning screenings per theater.

Xmen and Spidey were 104 and 121 mins, respectively, and neither felt rushed or truncated. There's no reason why any other Superhero movie, especially a single character, can't comfortably fit into the same range.

What you really hope is that whatever length it is, it feels right. Obviously, if it's pushing 3hrs. it's just written too long and presents some more substantial distribution issues. But in the 2-2:20 range is still pretty 'normal'. I'd prefer closer to 2, but not forced to be.

The first X-men was very rushed. Things got better by X-Men 2 and First Class.

I agree. It couldn't possibly. TDK and TDKR were both sequels with a ton of build-up. Avengers, it can be argued, is the exact same. It was a sequel to at least 3 other films.

I would expect that MOS does BB numbers and follow a similar line of revenue from film to film.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if it does a little better than BB, because it'll be riding on the back of The Dark Knight Trilogy's success.

I hope it does ride that train. I feel like it will need a bunch of help to overcome perceptions based on past mistakes.

'Batman Begins' debuted with $48 million. You really think mos opening weekend will be 48 million?mos opening weekend will be about 120 to 140 millon.About 300 million + domestic and 250 + oversea. It could make more than that if the trailers be badass.

If it's good, it'll do well.

It'll probably have a Captain America-like opening wknd, and then catch on/have good legs if it's pretty good.

Lol, no it won't. If it does a 140 OW I'll change my avatar to someone eating crow.

As already said, it'll likely do around Captain America/Superman Returns numbers. Also, keep in mind, Batman Begins gross from its cinema run alone did not get it a sequel, the strong home format sales did.

I think it'l do bigger if promoted right and its a great film

Captain America is not in the same class as superman. This is not superman returns.I guess you can change your avatar now.The opening weekend gonna be well over 100 mill.

What 'class' do you think Superman's in these days? As far as movies go, he sure ain't Batman or Iron Man. He could maybe build up to that after a successful first movie....but as of now he has yet to even hang with the likes of Cap.

This isn't about who your favorite comic character or whoever is...Superman's clearly isn't in Jack Sparrow's or Iron Man's league when it comes to movies. So keep in mind that he has to establish a new image and standing in movieland and that'll present a hump that he'll have to overcome with tis first flick. But I have a feeling that's a bit beyond your scope right right now.

I`m expecting Man of Steel to do big numbers. Anything less is a disappointment to my mind. This is Superman and if the movie is damn good, it is going to make tons of money. It's up to the new trailer and marketing, I think.

They did Iron man right. If they do superman right in mos it's gonna make Iron man 3 look like a joke.
