Marvel Now - Part 4

What Hickman is building towards is basically a galactic Avengers empire like Avengers Forever. As he said at the beginning of his run, Earth would be the first of many Avengers worlds. He's laying the foundation of it in Infinity.

Interesting Marvel is going back and pulling ideas from alternate Marvel realities into 616. Earth X with Inhumanity and Avengers Forever with Hickman's run.

So Marvel is going to be dual numbering with their books now. Even Hickman is pointing out how dumb this is. If they're going to dual number, at the very least dual number with the original numbering as opposed to the Marvel NOW numbering

Spencer: There are some big new challenges that emerge in the first issue, in very quick and catastrophic fashion. New empires are born, new armies rise up. The Avengers are very much caught off-guard by it. To me, it's exactly how big revolutions always occur-- seemingly overnight to the rest of the world. The Avengers and SHIELD have finally put aside their differences and are back to working together closely. But it might have come a day too late.

One thing we have tipped our hand on -- keep an eye on AIM. That organization, led by the new Scientist Supreme, has been gaining in power and prominence over the last few years -- and it looks like they might be ready to take that next step and become a dominant force. AIM is a group both Jonathan and I have worked on recently, so if you've been reading Avengers, Secret Avengers, or Jonathan's FF run, you'll see some very nice payoffs here.

Nrama: "Avengers World" sure seems to imply an even larger roster – is this building on the already extensive group in Avengers, or is the title more about them facing threats around the globe?

Spencer: We feature the same lineup you see in Avengers -- everyone from the classic lineup, like Cap and Thor and Iron Man, to the new faces like Hyperion and Smasher. And a big part of this book's focus is in making sure we spend some quality time with this cast, really get in their heads and see what's pushing them forward. We'll use a lot of flashbacks and personal interludes to hammer that home. While this is a big, epic story, it's really built on character development first.

In addition to the team's lineup, you'll also be seeing a lot more of Maria Hill and S.H.I.E.L.D. here, as the book really explores the relationship between that organization and the team, good and bad.
So hippier hunter we were both right in a way (though I was more right :oldrazz:)

Brevoort asks the crowd what they think the "Defend" teaser was promoting: It's "Iron Patriot," written by Ales Kot and illustrated by Garry Brown, and starting in March 2014. The announcement gets a loud reaction. "Rhodey's been a Secret Avenger, he's done a lot of global special ops missions, and he gets fed up with it." The series is about James Rhodes becoming his own man, away from Iron Man, Paniccia says.

Next announcement, tied to the "Overdrive" teaser: "Ghost Rider," starting in March 2014 from writer Felipe Smith and artist Tradd Moore; getting another warm reaction. Paniccia says there's not much he can say about it at this point, but it's completely different take on the character than what fans have seen before.

Paying off the "Rad!" teaser, it's, as expected, promoting "Silver Surfer" from Dan Slott and artist Mike Allred, also starting in March 2014. Crowd is pleased. "When I was growing up, the first superhero comic I ever read was 'The Galactus Trilogy," Slott said. "Surfer's like the first Marvel hero I ever met."

Slott says there's a "girl involved" in the story, and that he conceived the book with Allred in mind, even though at the time the artist was committed to "FF." "When we give Mike the first plot, he read it, and said, 'Did you write this for me?'" Slott says Allred may be the first "Silver Surfer" artist who actually is a surfer.

Silver Surfer's going to meet a kindred spirit in a woman from Earth, Slott says. "You're going to find out that the universe is more fun when you see it with someone," the writer continues.

Teased earlier this month in a teaser labeled “Overdrive,” indie creators Felipe Smith (MBQ, Freelancers) and Tradd Moore (Luther Strode) will be taking on Marvel’s Spirit of Vengeance and living up to the phrase “all-new.” Firing up this March, All-New Ghost Rider will be the birth of a new Ghost Rider named Robbie Reyes who has a thing for muscle cars. Newsarama spoke with All-New Ghost Rider’s editor Mark Paniccia about this bold new era for the Spirit of Vengeance, discussing his first foes, his first rides, and how different this series will be.

Now that Gary Friedrich and Marvel have settled out of court, GR is finally back in the Marvel Universe again.

This is shaping up nicely.

Oh? I didn't know there was a legal dispute over Ghost Rider.

Oh? I didn't know there was a legal dispute over Ghost Rider.

There's been a legal dispute for years, but it really flared up around the time GR movie came out. Marvel threatened to sue Gary Freidrich for even signing things or having various artists draw Ghost Rider. A court finally decided in his favor saying that Marvel's work for hire contract was too vague and before Gary could sue the socks off Marvel, they settled out of court back in July or June.

Interesting, I hope the new guy is better than the last chick. I'm also guessing he's the one who joins the new T-Bolts.

Interesting stuff. Didn't know that it went that far back. Well, glad Marvel didn't get their socks sued off and that Ghost Rider is still around.

Slott on whether or not "Silver Surfer" will touch on his long-percolating "Reckoning War": "It is very sci-fi/cosmic, so, yes. There will be some more 'Reckoning War' stuff."
I completely forgot about this. **** man, when is this going to happen? It's literally been ten years since this was first brought up.

Kinda disappointed in this Con so far. Typically there's at least 2 or 3 new announcements that get me excited, but not so much this year. The All New X-Men/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover is the biggest for me, but we already knew that was coming and I was already going to buy it, so no biggie there. As for the others that sorta caught my eye (so far):

I'm semi-interested in Silver Surfer. Slott's a good writer, but Allred is hit or miss for me depending on the project. This feels like the type of project I'd like him on, but I don't typically care for more playful books.

I typically don't care about Black Widow but feel that'd be a book that Phil Noto would just rock at. He's one of my favorite artists right now, so it's at least worth a skim.

I feel like Peter David's ship has sailed on X-Factor, but I do like the idea of Gambit, Polaris, and Quicksilver on a team. I don't know. I'll have to skim it.

I'm glad that it sounds like MarvelMan is being reprinted, but you know it's going to be $4 or $5 an issue with the end of Moore's run being $6 or so. I've never bothered reading Gaiman's run, so new issues don't interest me. I figure I'll wait to see prices on the rereleases and whether I buy those before getting excited to see Gaiman finish his run.

What's the Reckoning War? I've not followed enough of Slott's stuff to be familiar with it. At least, I don't think it was mentioned in Initiative, which was the only book of his that I read through.

Seems like Marvel is milking this Avengers thing.

They milked X-Men in the 90s and I'm sure another character/team will be next, just how it is.

the X-books of the 90's all served a purpose

or
Cloak and Dagger World
Defenders World
Alpha Flight World
Power Pack World
