I'm going to say that Miranda, Jack, Grunt & either Thane or Legion are going to return. 4 ME1 characters & 4 ME2 characters.

Legion's obviously going to be more than a cameo. He might be a temp squadmate but he's clearly at least going to be pretty significant during the Geth/Quarian situation. If I remember correctly there was a shot of him during the war meeting alongside some the Admiralty Board and we know he's driving Shep's ride during the Reaper sequence from E3.

I hope Legion's more than a cameo, but Thane doesn't really surprise me. Depending on how much time as passed between ME2 and ME3, he may already be dead, or in a highly weakened state, due to his illness.

He's not a permanent squadmate, and if he's not a temporary squadmate, then that's how they've been defining "cameo" for squadmates, i.e. if they're not joining your team, they'll make some cameo appearance in the game world, provided they're alive.

He might add something to the entire situation, but I don't think it'll be "significant," considering he won't be around in every person's playthrough. Just like Wrex. Just like the two DLC characters.

Well I suspect you'll need Tali/Legion for Geth/Quarian peace so if that ends up being the case, I'd say its pretty darned significant but that's just speculation on my part. Regardless he's clearly going to be more than what the Virmire Survivor or Liara (pre-Shadowbroker) were in 2.

And they've never actually used the word cameo if I'm not mistaken so you're kind of pulling that one out of your bum there...

Okay. So let's say I make sure my final playthrough of ME2 makes sure I sell him to Cerberus and make sure Tali bites it on the final mission. Onoes, now I won't be able to strike Geth/Quarian peace at all?

Hudson has made it clear that they intend to punish no player for choices made or squadmates dead or alive, and that for every story point there should be multiple potentials to play out the same way - so by that design vision, neither character should be essential for peace. But that's okay. I'll probably just help the silly spacesuit guys blow up the Geth for good, then take all their tech so they can't do that stupid **** again. Shepard + Simon Templeman's Quarian (Admiral Gan'Harel?) + Adam Baldwin's Quarian (Kal'Reegar!) = some stinkin' dead Geth.

But I think you mistook what I was saying about cameo. That's how Hudson has termed the roles of previous characters who will not be joining Shepard's party. Wrex will be a temporary squadmate, so he's not making a cameo appearance. Kasumi and Zaeed will not be returning as any type of squadmates, so they are making cameo appearances. I do believe it has been confirmed that Legion will not be a temporary squadmate - so, just like Mordin, he will be making a cameo appearance. The word "cameo" has nothing to do with the amount of time that appearance will be.
