I hope Reeves plays up the Noir angle like he’s claimed and does it right.

If they wanted a Neo Noir Batman, they should’ve gotten David Robert Mitchell to direct this. Under the Silver Lake is straight up one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

Maybe Reeves is about to drop out.
i dont even care. I have zero attachment to him as the director. His previous films were enjoyable to me but never sold me on him having the ability to make a transcendent Batman movie. He’s been on the scene for a while too so he’s had plenty of time to prove himself. I think he’s good, not great. Nolan is a modern great.

Right, because everything Reeves has said about the film gives us no reason to be excited for his take.

Reeves isn't Nolan for sure. But he made a transcendent (for me, at least) giant monster movie. Probably with substantial involvement of JJA. Which remains one my top 10 flicks and theatrical experiences of all time even 10 years later. I wasn't enamored by any of his other films, because I didn't really like what they were about. I don't like apes and I don't like Let Me In misery. It's just too nihilistic and messed up even for me. About time he tries to do something with interesting subject matter.

If he drops out, it will be more about another delay and rewrite/rework, rather than a loss of a transcendental director. Who does approach Nolan these days? Villeneuve maybe? But he's busy with other stuff. I can't recall anyone else. Reeves is one of better choices.

Lol Jett probably called it right this year, he said in Jan 2019 that production will probably start Feb 2020 (when THR blog said shooting will start Nov 2019)

and some of you act like the film is cancelled, again, when Justin from THR just reiterated what Jett said 3 months ago.

I don't like Jett and he's a bit hit and miss with other DC stuff, but on Batman stuff he's pretty spot on most of the time

Did I say I’m not excited? You didn’t even read my post. I’m liking what I’m hearing, but I can take him or leave him. He’s no Nolan. I’m excited for this Batman movie because of Batman. Not Matt Reeves.

Reeves directed a great movie with Let me in, and that was an easy feat, that was a remake and the original is already a great movie

His monster movie was one of a kind

His first Planet of the apes was very good, and his follow up good

All that is in the eye of the beholder, but all that is backed up by very good reviews;

Did he achieve the level of box office success that Nolan had ? No. Did it achieve his artistic success? It is debateable ...but for me Nolan has a slight edge : Nolan has more movie under his belts , and more diverse one. So, the comparaison isn't fair.

Now, if that was The Nolan of the Batman Begins, we could talk. and imo, there are not that far in level quality ( Nolan has the edge, because of the originality of Memento, but Reeves has achieved greater technical skill, than the Nolan from that era; The two of them are very good storyteller )how many directors have achieved actually more success that him actually? Villeneuve yeah and?

So i think we are lucky to have him; And i am very excited

Except here we have a director committed to giving us a noirish, POV-driven detective film. Something many of us having been screaming for for years. Were he to leave, who's to say the next director would share this same commitment?

We have some idea as to what we are getting in Reeves' take. So in effect, if you're excited for Reeves' take, you're excited for Reeves. You can't divorce the two.

And yeah, he seem to have a clear and ambitious vision ( and an exciting one imo)

Lengthy script writing stage is worrisome. It just has this vibe that they can't agree on something or keep retooling it every few months according to some new trend or general strategy, in this case cinematic ****ing universe (may they burn in hell).

I like what I’m hearing but I’m not sold on him being able to deliver what he’s promising. I sincerely hope he is the guy that gives us the Batman movie we’ve always wanted, but I don’t have 100% confidence in him, and would be fine if someone else replaced him. It’s not like it’s Reeves or nothing for me. His take sounds a lot better than Affleck’s though. Deathstroke as the villain was always a bad idea.

Let's remember that post Batman and Robin era, Warner was really careful on what they were doing with Batman.

(Not saying that Batman is in such bad state, but one could argue that with justice league score and reception + BvS reception, there are similarity )

In post B&R era we still got SS, BvS and JL, so... It doesn't mean much. WB either gets lucky with a director or not.

The idea here is that Reeves' take on the character will decide the franchise's future for the next decade. Might as well take time with it.

They'll be casting soon and we'll have actual news to discuss before long. It's not the end of the world. I think people are just aggravated because certain scoopers made it sound like casting news was imminent.

Yeah, I'm not suggesting them to roll something out as soon as possible. They better use all that time. Especially if it's a truly stand alone Batman. But combined with CU trend and smash success of certain films, it's not hard to imagine producers nagging directors to "leave the door open to possible bla-bla-bla"... Hence "polishing" and so on.

Batman is one of their flagship character. Of courses they have their others heroes, and they are surely happy to have an Aquaman, but it's important for them to get Batman right
