MCU: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Official Discussion - Part 3

I didn't say they lose anything in narrative value when watched independently, I said they GAIN something when watched together. Key difference, imo. But yes, the topic is the MCU, and I feel like it works in a somewhat similar way...though sometimes not quite as well.

I'm not going to pretend that Marvel is at all above criticism but some people are truly grasping at straws to try and drum up criticisms. For instance, in another thread right now I am in a debate with someone who continually asserts that iron man 3 is a "failure".

Yeah. People can be critical of the MCU, and people certainly don't have to like the MCU, but to deny the success of their films such as IM3 is just delusional. Whether you like the MCU or not, the films are popular with both critics and the general audience and they make a ton of money.

Weren't you in like multiple debates on another board only a few weeks back? I might be mixing you up though. I swear there was something about Mockingbird's costume as well as one or two other concurrent debates within the same pages. It went on and on and...

I was in some debates but it had nothing to do with superhero movies. It was all revolving around the Sony hack and the hypocrisy of some posters online here.

I've been critical of some of the things that they do.

I have some level of critique for all of the MCU films. There's not one in the bunch that I think is flawless and above being criticized. But that's still a far cry from bemoaning Marvel Studios as if they are ruining Hollywood(along with the rest of the superhero genre doing that as well) that I keep seeing in article after article posted in the op-ed sections of entertainment news sites and such. Just googling 'superheroes, Hollywood, bad' will net you a flood of cinephile b**ching and moaning. I read them now just to get a good chuckle at the expense of those cry babies.

I saw your debate in the other thread. Good luck. I've lost all interest in defending that which really doesn't need my help to defend it. It's record stands well against such vitriol all on it's own, IMO. Besides,I don't have the energy for that debate crap anymore.

Agreed
Marvel is here to stay, and I think it's almost sad for the people poking holes where there aren't any. None of their films are perfect, and several have some glaring problems, but to pretend they have outright "failed" in any capacity is intellectually dishonest.

Youtube poster centperk's MCU quadrology. :oldrazz: Simply fantastic, amazing, uncanny and spectacular. Truly a mighty effort. His prowess at this stuff seems invincible. An incredible talent giving tribute to the MARVEL STUDIOS output.

Hi, just read the newest eh maybe BS.
Either Umberto really believes his own bad fanfics or he totally lost his marbles

If it's true then the plan sounds awesome. But even with Gwen dead, the Goblins/Osborns mishandled, and the general clusterf TASM2 was, I'd rather that universe be folded into the MCU and Garfield continue playing Peter.

Naaa...Marvel can do soooo much better than Garfield.

Seems much of that article is theory more so than scooping. I still hope they don't
"Kill" Captain America in Civil War. Just so he can come back in Infinity War Part 2. I'd rather they do something more creative than "kill" another character temporarily again.

Sad we'd lose Garfield since i thought he was the best thing about the two new Spidey movies.

Not worth it to me, and Marvel would never do that. Sony has forever screwed up that Spider-man franchise, there's almost no repairing it.

I have nothing to add vis a vis the source(s) involved. No idea how reliable the info is, but the scenario(s) that precipitates Spideys addition to the team - as described in the post -rings true to me. Makes sense. That was my snap reaction anyway.

suck on that, LR
he idea of Sony-controlled Spider-Man appearing in Marvel Studios' upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War" generated a lot of talk after Latino Review posted it as an unconfirmed rumor earlier today. But don't get too excited: When reached by CBR News, a Sony Pictures representative dismissed the report, calling it an "old rumor" with "no validity whatsoever."
Latino Review's article stated that a long-discussed deal between Sony and Marvel Studios "went through," and that Spider-Man would make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in "Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1," scheduled for release in 2018. The outlet had no further details on the nature of Spidey's purported appearance, other than the character was also expected to return in 2019's "Infinity War, Part 2." The rumors quickly spread to numerous online outlets throughout the day.
Speculation and rumors that Sony and Marvel Studios may be working on a deal to share the live-action Spider-Man rights date back to at least last October, following an Entertainment Weekly report stating the two studios were in "delicate preliminary conversations" on the matter. Much of the subsequent talk centered on Spider-Man possibly appearing in Marvel Studios' 2016 film "Captain America: Civil War," in part due to the character's key role in Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's comic book "Civil War."
In December, following the illegal hack on Sony, the Wall Street Journal reported on leaked emails between Sony Pictures President Doug Belgrad and Sony Motion Pictures co-chair Amy Pascal discussing a potential deal with Marvel Studios, to help boost the film franchise of the Marvel Comics icon.
While today's denial doesn't preclude the possibility of Sony and Marvel Studios working together in the future, it appears that there's nothing new on that front as of now. CBR News also reached Marvel Studios parent company Disney on the rumors, who have not responded as of publication.

Sony said almost the same canned response to the same website regarding the Aunt May film and that turned out to be true in the hack. Currently CBR are the only site reporting a debunking, just like they were regarding Aunt May.

Highly unlikely we see a Marvel/Sony deal IMO.

First, there's the fact Sony has almost everything to lose and Marvel has anything to gain. I'm sure Marvel wants Spidey back, but they're in no position where they need him. And given Sony's latest track record with the character, from Marvel's perspective they can achieve the same results and more if they wait just a little longer for the current franchise to tank and the rights to either revert or be handed back. Which is a highly likely possibility at this point, especially if the rumors are true that Garfield is gone. There's no way you can sell a new actor in the role with the reputation the current franchise has.

Second, Avi Arad and Kevin Feige have a bad history together. Feige's left the executive producer role in the other Marvel films and created the MCU partly due to being unhappy with working with Arad's team, while Arad is trying to cling to the only Marvel film property he has left.

Third, it would be very harmful to the MCU if the whole purpose of a deal is simply to get Spider-Man back on track. It would work momentarily, but what would happen in the long-run? What if by Phase 5 or 6, Sony decides they don't need Marvel's creative input or the contract stating Marvel can have input for x amount of years expires? And what if they decide to reboot after? What would happen to the MCU version? That's why I can only see a deal working if the conditions are somewhat ongoing. But even then, I'm sure Marvel wouldn't want ongoing creative control from another studio in their own continuity.

If this did have any semblance of actually happening, I could see Spidey having a cameo but not more than that. If the MCU does get the rights to him back, they need to hold off on making another Spider-Man movie so that there might actually be interest when they do.

December and January are really slow for me at work. Therefore, I had some time today and updated the expected timeline for 2015. I should have time (and inclination) this summer to update it further. Something else I've wondered about, in regards to DD; will each individual show take place at different points in the MCU? Or, are they going to occur in the span of a couple of weeks or months? I know, most people won't care about that level of specificity, but I do wonder how "accurate" they will be with the episode placement, compared with Agents of Shield which goes perfectly with the movies.

Well Netflix is a different beast with a whole season coming out on the same day. So working the series into the timeline will very probably be different to the ABC shows

So, for extra credit on a really hard test, I gave these questions to my students:

1. Why is Jarvis so loyal to Howard Stark?
2. Why isn't Agent Carter on next week?
3. Which phase two movie was better:
a. Iron Man 3
b. Thor: The Dark World
c. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
d. Guardians of the Galaxy
4. Which of the remaining phase 2 films do you think will be better:
a. Avengers: Age of Ultron
b. Ant-Man

I will post the results once I have them graded.

Yeah, and that's what I wonder about. For example, will the first episode just be a young Matt Murdoch getting chemicals spilled on his face? Then, 12 years later we get episode 2 where Matt's in law school. Just wonderin'......
