MCU: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Official Discussion - Part 4

I do think that we'll see Monica in the MCU sooner rather than later, perhaps in Captain Marvel. I think Marvel will cast a bit younger for Monica, which leaves the options somewhat limited.

They are going to want someone who has a lot of buzz around Hollywood. They've done this a lot with their casting. Right now there are two black actresses getting a lot of buzz in Hollywood for upcoming film roles: Naomie Harris and Aja Naomi King. Harris is almost 40, so I don't know if Marvel wants to cast her as Monica, but who knows. King is 30, so that's the right age to play Monica. Many of the black actors recently cast were coming off "red hot" before doing Marvel. Chiwetel Ejiofor was fresh off an Oscar nomination when he was cast as Mordo. Chadwick Boseman received high praise for Get on Up and 42. Lupita Nyong'o was also off an Oscar win, but also had high buzz for her recent Broadway work, including a Tony Award. Danai Gurira is on the Walking Dead, but got a Tony Nomination for her play. MBJ had just come off critical and box office success for Creed as was Tessa Thompson.

King would be my top choice for Monica if they are looking for someone with buzz. They would obviously have to work around her schedule on HTGAWM. If she gets all of the accolades for Birth of a Nation as many expect, she'll be on Marvel's radar for something, if not Monica.

My new top five for Monica Rambeau:

1. Aja Naomi King
2. Janelle Monae
3. Naomie Harris (although 40, I would not be surprised at all if she ends up in BP instead)
4. Teyonah Paris
5. Kerry Washington (39, but also would not be surprised if she ends up in BP).

Just regarding those two retrospectives I would have definitely ended Phase 2 with Civil War.

I know it "didnt end there" but it's the far more logical closing point for the second act. Civil War is really the resolution of Age of Ultron.

Doctor Strange through Infinity War(s) will likely be my own personal phase 3.

So what is the thought on my Monica Rambeau casting choice? I am basing it off recent Marvel castings: hiring talented actors based off Hollywood buzz, which King has. I got Monae second because of buzz from her performance in Moonlight. Same with Harris. Teyonah Parris got attention from Dear White People and Chi-Raq. Kerry Washington is well...Kerry Washington.

My next five:

6. Gugu Mbatha Raw
7. Nicole Beharie
8. Tika Sumpter
9. Rutina Wesley
10. An unknown like Hemsworth pre-Thor or Tom Holland pre-Spidey.

I like to think that CW is not really the resolution of AoU so much as AoU is a sort of prologue to set the stage and status quo going into Phase 3.

Infinity War is going to be the film/films to resolve all of the first 3 phases I think.

The Accords will not be resolved in Infinity War. I expect them to continue to be a divisive issue spawning the creation of sanctioned groups like Thunderbolts and unsanctioned "vigilantes" like Cap.

that could lead into dark reign now that they have spider-man. That'd be pretty awesome.

If the Accords are active during Infinity War, how will they fight Thanos?

Steve, Wanda, Banner, Scott, will all have to sit it out.

Are you serious with that question?

You break the damned law.

"Ah, geez whiz guys. I really wish I could help save the universe but you know the accords just won't let me. I'm really sorry. It's past my bedtime."

Gugu is at the top of my list for Monica, she's just an actress that I find very compelling, Naomie Harris used to be my fav for it, and she'd rock the heck out of it, no doubt. Aja is super hot right now (When isn't she? ba-dum-ching!) so I could see that, and that would certainly be a win. I'd put Nicole Beharie and Janelle Monae at 4 and 5. Everyone else is great, just not as captivating to me. While Marvel has traditionally gone with nigh unknowns with lots of promise (and low pay requirements ala Downey in '06), I think with Black Panther, and Captain Marvel, and to a lesser degree Dr. Strange, they've gone for names with more acclaim, perhaps still with lower pay requirements than an A or B-lister, and perhaps that's just because of wage gaps for female or black performers, not sure. Regardless, I don't think they're going to do Monica justice really. I mean, the comics hardly do, so I can't say I'm looking forward to Monica Rambeau in the MCU right now. From what I hear, she's going to be Carol's Rhodey so... yay?

The way that Misty Knight has been portrayed in the MCU gives me hope that Monica will be done well. My issue with Naomie as Monica is her age. She's 40 and they may want someone closer to Brie Larson's age and Larson is 27. I had never thought that Lupita Nyong'o was going to be a fit for Monica (even though I like Lupita) and it was a right move to put her in as Nakia. I had thought that Rosario Dawson would have made a good Monica, but she's perfect as Claire Temple. Zoe Saldana I don't think would have been a good Monica, while Tessa Thompson would have been a good Monica as well. I have always thought that if Naomie Harris was going to be in a Marvel movie, it was going to be Black Panther.

A name I have heard that has been fan cast in recent weeks is Pitch Star Kylie Bunbury. I've seen the show and while I like it, I don't even know if she's on Marvel's radar at this moment. She's very good on that show. She's the same age as Larson though, so that's a plus.

I've said before Marvel wants to cast someone with buzz, so if Aja, Kylie or Naomie get Golden Globe Nominations, I would think that Marvel would go after them. Out of the three, it'll probably be Naomie since Birth of a Nation crashed and burned, and Pitch could be canceled by the time the Golden Globes are announced. I think though because of her age, she'll end up in Black Panther instead.

I think it might be too late to 'end up in Black Panther.' All of the principal roles have already been cast. I don't know if awards buzz is all there is to it, looking at Chadwick Boseman. I think they may be casting for raw talent first, and then buzz behind that. By that standard Teyonah Paris is the one.

Kevin Feige became a Hot Toys action figure, but not be plans to make another copy of this figure.

Villains? Like plural? As far as big time villains, he's only done Loki and Ultron, and Loki was pretty consistent from his appearance in Thor. So even then, Whedon would only have dumbed down or made a quipster out of one.

Though EVERY other MCU villain being menacing? Vanko and Yellow Jacket say otherwise.

The Other was pretty faithful to the comics, and given he's merely the avatar of a vastly superior, devious, and inscrutable being, we don't know if Loki was beholden to the Mad Titan or the Demon of the DarkHold.

Imagine if MCU's last movie ends up being a 2027 release.
Two full decades of MCU goodness all the way following a 46 years old Chris Evans.

Joss Whedon talking about Marvel:

'Everybody’s got their own method. I think Marvel has been more successful systematically. DC has been more cinematic—their stuff looks amazing—but I feel like Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] is a really good storyteller. He really cares about coherence, and I feel like style never defeats substance at Marvel, but a little style creeps in. Ant-Man had some, Doctor Strange might be funky, and they are doing very fun things on TV. The Marvel-Netflix thing is working really well...There are some times when you get micro-managed to death but with Marvel, they let me make two movies that were very much mine.'

I love how highly he speaks of Feige and how he still says the Avengers movies are his own even after all this time. I'd welcome him back for more with open arms.

do you think Ultron already exists in the real world, we have 2 separate AI systems, Siri from Apple, and Cortana from Microsoft?
