More Talking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to remember where I read the line. It went something like this;
"Puny soldiers call Hulk brainless! Call Hulk monster! But every time Hulk smashes you, you come back for more! That make you more brainless than Hulk! And you attack Hulk, when Hulk only want to be left alone! That make you more monster than Hulk!"

Yeah, that's a nice quote from the Savage version of Banner's alter ego. I don't recall which issue it's from but there are many instances with Hulk making similar remarks.

These are the type of comments from Hulk that would gain him empathy and compassion leaving movie audiences thinking 'why don't they just try leaving him alone?' Norton did an exceptional job making us feel Banner's struggle, but what was missing is that we have to feel Hulk's struggle as well. What's more interesting is when we see the same struggle, from both sides Hulk's and Banner's.

When on a rampage, Hulk is usually reacting to something that has either happened to him or Banner.

Hey Chris, and anyone else, let's post Hulk quotes from comics that best define who he is. I like this thread, let's keep it going.

"You will shoot me no more! So! This is what puny humans fear!" (while crushing a gun) TIH issue #1

"Blast it! It's no good! Too many jets! I almost crashed into 'em! They're coming this way! I can't stay here! But there's no place to hide! They gotta stay back! Why don't they keep away?? I don't wanna hurt anyone! But if they come closer...If they attack me...It'll be TOO BAD!" TIH #6

Hulk in deep thought:

"No place to go! No one to turn to! The world hates the Hulk! They hunt me...hound me.., try to destroy me! Why? Why? Why does it never end?!!! TTA #80

"Better for the Hulk that he is alone...and better for humans!" TIH #135

I hate mute Hulk. He should talk in every scene he's in. But I would drop the third person thing. Just have him say simple things instead.

Agreed!

Hulk must be able to communicate and articulate himself well. Don't get me wrong, I love Savage Hulk, but he's not the end all to be all. I think in a two hour movie the Hulk from early Stan Lee TTA issues, later Peter David's run and Greg Pak's stories would work best. You can have all the elements of a being who is as Savage as they come but, who also fully realizes the extent and danger of his anger unleashed. It'd give Hulk much more depth, than just being an unbridled force. Hulk himself, and not just Banner, needs inner conflict in order to do him justice. He needs to be able to reflect on the fear, hate, injustices and destruction around him.

Hulk as Tarzan = no, it won't work, as fantastic as "Hulk smash!" was in the film. "I just wanna be left alone" and its ilk is the right direction.

the Hulk should talk a lot more.. give a little Fixit personality, with very short clipped sentences.. the Abomination talked, so da**it, so can Hulk..

I think Hypestyle was just saying speech wise, a smart alec normal speaking Hulk would work. The Mr. Fixit personality would be a fun watch if done right.

I'll say it again Marvel Studio's needs to study issue # 393 of the Incredible Hulk, use the Gravage incarnation for their movies because he posses both personalities of Fixit and Savage Hulk, which would be interesting study for Doc Samson, and they should use Peter David and Greg Pak as the 'Brain Trusts' for Hulk films. These two writers understand what the fans love about the character and they know how to write his syntax.

"Hulk hates puny Banner!" (many comics)

I do agree that he should talk a little more in the next movie and in the Avengers movie, but not in every line. Maybe just mostly in his scenes with Betty.

"Ain't nothin' I can't do squirt...and don't ever forget it!" Gravage Hulk TIH #5

"Why is it always Hulk who is wrong for fighting back!" Savage Hulk TIH #246

"You had your chance and ya blew it! And with the Hulk one chance is all ya get!" Gray Hulk TIH #338

“Now you do realize you have the opportunity to surrender and avoid a lot of needless violence. Not that I’d ever surrender of course. But it’d be in your best interest.” Merged Hulk TIH #391

"When you go against me, you go against the laws of nature." Maestro Future Imperfect

"Hulk hates puny Banner!" (many comics)

This factor is so detrimental to the character, that not having it, is like not watching the Hulk in the movie at all.

Also, by adding in Hulk's dissatisfaction at the hypocrisies in humans in general, would change these movies from popcorn flicks to more serious themes, just without losing the fun.

"Human?? Why should I want to be human?!?" TIH #1

One of the ironies of the character of the Hulk is that when angered, he's as powerful as the most destructive forces of nature, yet he's seeking peace, and his place in a world that misunderstands and hates him. It would have been interesting to hear him state that he thinks fighting, guns, weapons and violence are stupid, but being true to Hulk, have him state that if soldiers want to fight, he'll give them a fight to remember.

I think there are so many facets that can be touched on and explored with a vocal Hulk that are left out when he doesn't speak.

I totally agree. He is like an unstoppable force of nature. He will fight back, never wear down or get fatigued, and the more he is provoked, the more he'll get stronger and fight back. Yes, he wants to be left alone, but don't p*ss him off, or else!! :bh:

Well put.

Alright here is the undeniable truth

we've established in both films the hulk can speak. While in the first film it is implied the hulk won't speak due to a superiority complex 'puny human describing the way he feels about those who surround him in general' (in the same way you wouldn't speak to an ant), that was fine because it opened up the opportunity for the hulk to speak to those he deemed worthy in the future.

now with this hulk, his voice was kinda slurred and very simple, it was as if he lacked the ability to communicate effectively and that limited his speech. He definitely should have spoke with betty in the cave.

alas, the reason he didn't is because the writers and director don't want a speaking hulk, they want a hulk similar to the show in the 70s and it's very hard for them to get this view of the character out of their heads.

That show is probably the number one hindrance of getting a proper hulk product out there in the market. It's so anti-hulk it's untrue, yet that's what the majority of people believe they wish to view.

shame really.
