New Mutants New Mutants News and Discussion - Part 1

Seems to be a lot of confusion about what's going on with New Mutants, so for clarity purposes I'm going to sum it up for everyone.

This has nothing to do with Disney.

JB made a crappy horror movie that just happened to have the New Mutants in it.

Fox recognized their mistake shortly after the release of the trailer. The public reaction to the trailer was generally confusion & disinterest.

It will be released.

They are not doubling down on that pricks "genius vision" by making the film darker. Even Fox (believe it or not) understands this would be a bad idea.

Reshoots are intended to lighten the tone of this crappy horror movie that just happens to have the New Mutants in it.

Anyone who says this "film" tested even remotely positively is mistaken. Nobody likes JB's excrement (oh I'm sorry I meant movie).

Myself and the majority of the folks whom I worked with are of the opinion this movie cannot be fixed with reshoots alone. It's just that bad.

Fox has a complete "movie" that they've invested big money in. But they are too cheap to redo it all, so they're doing some reshoots in the hopes that they can break even.

I can personally confirm that people high up were warned beforehand that this would not work as a horror movie. They did not listen. I think in part because what was in the works before JB came aboard required a significant budget increase.

The only redeeming quality of this movie is the actors. They did phenomenal with what they had to work with. Yet another reason this whole thing is just sad.

Hope that covers it.

So we're looking at another Justice League situation?

While Fox now understands these issues and are actively trying to fix this mess, I'm afraid that all the happy go lucky reshoots they can muster up won't save this one. Very sad.

Good scoop!

Where did you hear this?

There's also been...next to no talk of reshoots at all.

Or perhaps that's what some folks want.

Or just lies. Lol

Bad things. Really bad things from very, very smart people. This movie will be bad like all Crooked Fox movies.

SAD!!!

I guess the bright side is that at least they're putting in extensive effort to fix this instead of releasing a massive bomb. The last thing the X-Men need is a Fant4stic mess.

There's never a good time to release a massive bomb. But right after you agreed to sell off your entertainment assets is probably the best option.

Maisie Williams is shooting Game of Thrones until the summer, so it makes sense it will take that long for reshoot scenes if the changes are big.

Thing about making it scarier makes sense and I guess the delay would be the best fit for their movie schedule while fitting in all the actors' schedules? That's all I can think of other than them Han Soloing the movie.

Is that something they said the delay might be for? Schedules I can understand although they should have sorted that out beforehand. I'd rather get a good film delivered late than a below par film on time though so whatever works. Just hope it's not a result of any underlying problems.

I'm not so sure about that. Disney can't dictate what FOX does with characters they control under the licensing agreement before the deal is finalized. But could folks at Marvel Studios and/or Marvel Entertainment advise FOX on their handling of Marvel characters up until the turnover date? I don't see why not. It would make sense for both parties to allow for a smooth transition in (probably) 2019.

Because they are not going to even risk a chance of impropriety and endanger the deal.

Why would Marvel advising a Marvel licensee be considered improper? This isn't a situation like AT&T and Time Warner where the two companies were in two totally different businesses. FOX and Marvel have been in bed together since 1993.

Why risk it when you have a 60 billion dollar deal in the mix?

So basically New Mutants/Cecilia Reyes in name only. So much hope!

I don't see the risk here. If the deal gets blocked - or more likely, restructured - I doubt Disney/Marvel advising FOX on the use of characters owned by the Mouse would be the reason. As we've seen with the Sony leaks, the TV deal and the Ego-Negasonic arrangement, Marvel does not exactly maintain an "arms length" relationship with its licensees.

Feige and Kinberg working together on an end game for the Singer-verse makes more sense to me than the "salt the earth" strategy of pushing out last minute solo flicks for characters that have been ignored for much of the 25 year history of the Fox-Marvel licensing agreement.

Slugzilla, any scoop for Dark Phoenix, Dark Phoenix Rises, Laura and Gambit?

Making an X-men book into a horror film did seem like a cheap way to possibly interpret these characters. A horror film rather than a superhero film.

Boone wanted to pay homage to his favorite 80s horror flicks. Just reading his previous interviews, I knew something was off.

To me it smells like making Fantastic Four a body horror movie.

Although obviously Boone seemed to have more respect for the source, despite eliminating any relation to Xavier and his Institute, white washing some characters, and eliminating the costumes.

As far as the whole merger effecting things:
This whole 12-18 month waiting period equating to future X-Men films being unaffected appeared to be rumor at first then seemingly made official through multiple news channels. However, this appears to currently be a cover for certain key players at Fox to act on their own accord to shake things up on their own movies it is increasingly seeming likely.

Besides the news swirling around on this film, I find it odd a bunch of other announcements have hit at the same time. Change of release date for 2 key movies and the Gambit movie direction taking a U-turn (originally announced as ready shoot after merger when everyone thought wasn't now no surprise opposite news arrives) as well as odd bits of news (Kitty Pride movie perhaps Fox's reaction to all negative buzz surrounding Brett Ratner?) have me thinking certain higher ups at Fox are uncomfortable sitting and waiting so are starting to take things apart thinking making things better.

I had nothing to do with any of those movies. Sorry. Although if I had to guess Dark Phoenix will probably be the only one of that makes it out because it's already been made.

dont be so sure this was exactly Josh Boone idea on first place. Producers have a say.
I'll leave it there

I don't think Fox executives are trying to act on Disney or Marvel's direction. If that was the case, I don't think they would've moved Deadpool 2 to May right after Avengers.

Jeff Snyder said on Meet the Movie Press today that he is hearing (not confirmed) that New Mutants will get a theatrical release BUT that Disney may want the film and its sequels for their big streaming service launch next year.

which would be kind of Marvel getting their own Stranger things on their service. Makes sense. And I wouldnt be mad, tbh. As long as we get more new mutants, Im fine if its tv instead of theatres.

How accurate is this guy though?

They can advise all the want doesn't mean that Fox has to listen to them. Feige advised the ASM team on the sequel and they didn't listen to him.

This has been Boone's baby from the get go. What you trying to spin?
