New Mutants New Mutants News and Discussion - Part 1

We've seen some reports saying they are reshooting it because it wasn't scary enough. Others are saying the exact opposite. Feh, not sure what to believe.

People complete films in 10 months though. Making it "more scary" or "more horror" just tells me it wasn't a good horror film or film in general.

Was really looking forward to this despite thinking the trailer was weak. This was so close to release. Bummer.

10 months is likely because Maise is filming GOT through the summer on the other side of the Atlantic. To do extensive reshoots, you kind of have to wait for her schedule to clear up a bit. Tranatlantic flights are not a good choice for maybe a few hours of filming, and you can be sure HBO will not allow her to be worn out in that way.

Worth noting that this season of Game of Thrones is shooting "based" on the time they're depicting in the show. So they're filming early winter scenes now, but summer scenes in the summer and such. So they've spread it out all throughout the year.

Hopefully the former, but I got feeling it's the latter. Only way to know is to see how they start marketing it again (probably around October or November). If it looks like a horror movie or more of a straightforward superhero adventure romp.... will pretty much tell us what they did with it. Until then I have lost all hype. I still think it could be good, and will watch it with an open mind. But let's just say I have my doubts. And if this ends up like some Fan4stic, Suicide Squad abomination, well Lord help us.

Glad they are pushing this more towards horror. I want comic book films breaking out into other genres. I like having multiple flavors. Rather than just plain ol' "vanilla".

We can only hope.

Hope that covers it.

Well that's pretty bleak! I do have to ask, I know you appear on the side of the equation that said New Mutants should never be a horror movie, and view Josh Boone as "a prick." Is the general consensus among everyone who's seen the rough cut--including those who wanted it to be a horror movie--is that it's "excrement?" I understand you hate it, but I'm just curious if everyone involved in it is this disappointed, including those who were more eager to go along with Boone's vision.

the quesion would be: does Maisie have to film now 1 hour of extra scenes or what?

So unless Fox wants a complete different movie, I dont see Maisie and the rest of the cast now filming 10-15 new scenes. More around 5 scenes, I would guess. And that could be done in 1 week, if they condensate her filming in a short period of time, no need to have Maisie in Boston during 3 months, thats like... the original version of New Mutants in full lol

Comic-team horror is fine if there are a lot of nods to the comic characters. Straight up horror is cool too, but I don’t anticipate those, just catch them at some point. There’s millions of them also. I only really get excited by horrors that do something a bit differently.

New mutants in February 19 and changing Gambit to Summer 19 implies getting one less movie that year scheduled for that summer date before these changes.. makes me sad thinking it would probably be X-force! Hope the November release is X-force..hope they dont scrapp it!

Yeah, alongside Deadpool 3 that’s the one I really want to see.

I don't think Fox executives are trying to act on Disney or Marvel's direction. If that was the case, I don't think they would've moved Deadpool 2 to June right after Avengers.

Perhaps they could be acting on their own accord too. Just the pressure of waiting and knowing your high level positioning within the studio is maybe in jeapardy due to business being bought out. I can see people getting antsy just waiting is what I was getting at moreso.

Overall, Summation of things from what I understand after test screenings took place:
-Trade Reports: Amp up scare factor

-Insider Reports: The film is going to undergo tonal changes due to unhappiness over horror approach. 1 side (slugzilla) seems to see Josh Boone as abrasive causing issues on set, not treating people right, and upset the original vision, and that movie is a wreck. Other report from Manobyte mentions a higher-up ready to put the foot down meddling with it in some way (why didn't do this earlier I have to wonder). Things seem to be corroborating to some degree (perhaps not totally) through slightly different perspectives it seems to me.

-Speculation on Merger Direct: How effecting things directly. A lot of people seem focus mainly on direct interaction with Disney citing the "waiting period" as it's increasinly being announced seemingly negates this...

Speculation on Merger Indirect Effects on Executives: How people in positions of power are reacting to having to sit and wait within their positions at a company that has just been sold. Sitting around can make people start to feel like they need to do some things...

Even getting her for a weekend is a hassle. GOT films across the Atlantic.

but she doesnt film all days of the year, its not like she is the lead character of GoT. Its an ensemble, much easier for the actors to come and go and film some stuff somewhere else

They should've got it right to start with. She's not obligated to fly across the world just so they can reshoot something they messed up

I know, but she's contracted, lol

I was never against the idea of doing a New Mutants horror film. Early on it was being discussed as for what would've been the sequel. The clash was over how to introduce the New Mutants to the mainstream audience.

The outline we had early on was to start the franchise with a fun, light hearted, yet still edgy and real story about these kids with these incredible powers exploring them out in the public against the orders of their headmaster whom has "no choice" but to leave these kids alone in a mansion with no supervision due to an "emergency". It was very "Deadpool-esque". Roberto & Magik decide on a whim to go out into town and screw around with the normal people, and the others tag along. So they hilariously f around with the normies for awhile until they run into law enforcement and Roberto in a fit of anger inadvertently rips one of the cops arms off. Thats when things get serious and the government sends in the Sentinels. Not the sentinels we've seen in other X-Films. These are the freaking giant over the top Sentinels from the comics, purple and all that. They smash absolutely everything in their way trying to catch the mutants destroying much of the city all to the cheers of the completely oblivious civilians. The New Mutants eventually destroy the sentinels and return to the security of the empty mansion. The X-Men are mentioned as being away on a mission fighting "some big fat bastard" at which point we shoot to a quick shot of the X-Men (in Jim Lee styled uniforms but we only see them from behind and they don't speak) from behind who are watching the Blob pulling a cat out of a tree and eating it, resulting in some of the X-Men puking. Xavier returns and strongly reprimands the New Mutants for their irresponsible behavior remarking about the "emergency mission" he had been on then and then we quickly cut to Xavier in bed with an unnamed redhead. (we only see Xavier from behind in the movie) The kids play a game of spin the bottle resulting in everyone kissing Roberto, and Rahne & Dani sharing an awkward yet enjoyed kiss. We cut to the next day, with all the New Mutants walking along the lake, appreciating the safe haven offered by Xavier and the Mansion. The mansion explodes to the shock of the New Mutants and we close with a closeup on Rahne saying "Oh ****!" (throughout the movie the other New mutants try to get Rahne to curse but she refuses).

Myself and others involved believed strongly that was the best way to INTRODUCE everyone to The New Mutants.

That was to be the first New Mutants movie.

We had a loose outline for the the sequel, that was much darker, with the New Mutants waking up in a military facility after the events of the first movie. This was the basic outline that Boone convinced Fox to run with.

Many involved thought that we couldn't successfully start this franchise with the darker horror themes that were on the table for what was supposed to be the sequel.

We simply thought it best to introduce these obscure characters that we cared about to the audience in a lighter tone, obviously connected to the X-Men, while still giving them something unlike any of the other X-men films. (except for Deadpool) Which meant big visuals, lots of superpowers and fun. Then we could explore darker tones once the franchise had been established by the first film.

Yes, we're kinda bitter over the direction they ended up taking, but many of us stayed on to try and do everything we could to right the ship so to say.

Out the all people I stayed in contact with afterwards who've seen the "final product" even those who came onboard after Boone that had nothing to do with early production, I haven't heard one positive review. Not even remotely positive. And I sure didn't enjoy it at all.

For what it's worth, I certainly don't know everyone who's seen it, so I would assume there's got to be some who enjoyed the it.

But Fox is in panic mode for a reason, and it ain't a good one. I legitimately hope these reshoots will help to save this movie. I don't believe they will, but I hope so. If this one is successful, that would mean a chance to do another one. And Fox knows who they should've listened to from the start now, so we'd love a chance to do another one that does these characters justice.

Hmm.. what exactly was your job on the project? Script polisher or something?

They could always cut Maisie Williams from the movie and re-film her scenes with another actress :)

OMG. This seems to me like fanfictions written by little girls in love with ''their" characters.

Actually Maisie had nothing to do with the script. But she is little and loved her character, I'll give you that. She's also very kind an courteous. I enjoyed meeting her.

For the record, I posted about this situation, including the reshoots & the reason for them several days before anyone had heard or reported anything. Then people doubted me and called me a liar. Then it was announced that New Mutants had been delayed for ten months. One hell of a coincidence isn't it....
