I here people saying that Scott didn't have much of a role in X1, that he was shown to be a poor leader and tactician, that everyone else was coming up with plans and strategies, that he was being talked back to and contradicted. I just rewatched X1 and I strongly disagree:
Scott's first appearance, he releases Rogue from her harness with a well placed blast and then saves Wolverine while Storm essentially provides cover and keeps Sabertooth at bay. Back at the mansion after Wolverine roughs him up and shows his Resentment Cyclops has a conversation with him that lets Wolverine know that Cyclops doesn't take crap from anyone and manages to get the last word. W He's clearly concerned about his team and what consequences might happen if Wolverine proves wild and unpredictable in combat, same with his ability to follow orders in a combat situation. hen Xavier goes under and into a Coma, Cyclops is there watching over him, and promising that if something should happen, he'll "take care of them".One of my fav scenes. Nice way to show the man is ready to step up to the task and carry the burden, if necessary. After Jean tells him where Magneto is going, Cyclops figures out Magneto's plan. Cyclops is the one that comes up with the strategy for how to infiltrate Liberty Island. Cyclops is the captain of the jet and coordinates the others in their use of powers (such as Storm giving them cloud cover).
He's fairly good at combat and definitely an expert shot with his visor. He's temporarily knocked out by Toad and separated from the team, but when he revises and gets pissed off, he makes short work of blasting that door away and rejoining the action. When Jean is suffocating from Toad's deadly spit, Cyclops saves her, again with a well placed, precise optic shot. He's not afraid of Magneto and stand up to him. Ordering Storm to blast him with lightning wasn't so much of a bad tactical decision as it was to show Magneto they're willing to do whatever it takes to stop him. Plus being in a copper faraday cage, they would have been protected from the lightning. The only time when he wasn't involved in strategy planning was when Jean came up with the idea to hover his visor in front of him and use it to deflect the beams to blast Sabretooth.
Towards the end of the battle, unlike what some people thought, it was actually Cyclops who came up with the idea to have Storm levitate him so he could get close enough to Magneto's rotating machine to blast it and stop it. It was at this point that Wolverine suggested levitating himself instead, the reason being that if Wolverine failed to stop the machine, at least Cyclops would be around and would have a second chance to blast and destroy the machine. Cyclops agreed and then coordinated the effort, himself coming up with the idea that Jean assist Storm in helping to stabilize Wolverine's flight. And when Wolverine was held in place by Magneto, Cyclops once again used his expert shooting skills (despite Jean's initial concern, which he overrided) and made another well placed shot that knocked Magneto out and allowed Wolverine to finish the job.
Far as I can tell, this was a nice presentation of leadership as well as coordination and teamwork, and to me it seems like Cyclops did a pretty good job.
