No, there'd just be someone else *****ing about Jackson cutting the eagles instead.
He really should have made 148 versions of the film to counter these possibilities though.

Yeah but it could have been one movie. The only reason they get anywhere is because of the worst plot device I've ever seen in movies, those stupid eagles. I can not stands those stupid eagles. It didn't help that they came right after the stupidest and completely unneccessary action scenes I've seen in a while. If the movie would have ended with Bilbo telling them that he is going to help then that I would have been happy. That scene was phenomenal and wonderfully acted, right there boom Thorin accepts him. But no. Jackson doesn't know how to end movies and completely screws up the entire movie with that action scene.

In the book there is an explanation given as to why the Eagles don't carry the Dwarves to the Lonely Mountain. Its because they raid the sheep of the men of Dale, and so the men of Dale would shoot them down.

Because Eagles don't talk in the films, however, it seems like a major plot hole.

Radagast- I couldn't take him seriously with crap in his birds nest/hair

I KNOW it's a fantasy film but some of the things the dwarves went through was just too much of a stretch.

-Falling into a giant goblin layer

-sliding down a cliff on some rickety wooden structure and slowing down till gently landing.

I did laugh at the goblin king just dropping on them

-Grabbing onto a falling tree

Much of the fall into the Goblin city plays like a Rube Goldberg machine of survival.

They took on nazgul, I don't think arrows would hurt them. I don't find anything wrong with them dropping them off far away i just figured they were scared of Smaug. My problem is just the eagles in general. They're a dumb easy convient plot device.

It's easy, they don't wanna fly with a huge fire breathing dragon around the mountion

Yeah I understand that. That's not the problem. Problem is they keep going back to them. I'm sick of the eagles always bailing our heroes out of trouble. Also if they are so intelligent they should know Smaug hasn't been heard from in years and they could have easily dropped them off closer. Also the cg on them was horrendous

"The Eagles are a dangerous 'machine'. I have used them sparingly, and that is the absolute limit of their credibility or usefulness. " - J.R.R. Tolkien

Deus ex Machina anyone?

"Oh well. I gave them Beorn."

Two minutes and ten beers later.

*Beorn walks out of his hut wearing nothing but sandals and a pair of tighty whities, holding a can of Budweiser*

"WHASSUUUUUP?"

Jackson isn't gonna mess up Beorn or Smaug for that matter. He gets the big picture; he messes up the little and subtle things.

They don't take on Nazgul in the books.

In the books the Eagles have a complex relationship with the various races. They largely keep to themselves and aren't buddies with many other folk other than Gandalf or Radagast. They also talk in the books, which explains that they can't just fly for forever, but have to rest regularly. They can't just go anywhere, because there are enemy beasts that fly too, and there are all kinds of folk who hate them and will shoot them down. They are hard to contact. They aren't a crutch or plot device for the heroes, any more than the Ents or the Army of the Dead are. They are allies, but allies who aren't servants available to one's every whim.

The films screwed stuff up, I agree. They should make the Eagles talk somehow, even if it is just that Gandalf translates for them (the dude can talk to moths, and Radagast talks to a bird in the film). Then they could explain a lot of this stuff. Instead the films just use them cheaply without explanation. But this is because it is a poor adaption of the Eagles, not because of problems inherent in the books.

As per Michael Moorcock, who knew and corresponded with Tolkien, the Prof would be appalled at the radical Hobbitoids. Tolkien was as much a fan of the pulps as many of us here.

As Tolkien himself said, the Eagles are used sparingly (and almost exclusively by Gandalf and Radagast). And they are difficult for either Wizard to get in touch with. Gandalf doesn't have the movie "summon Eagle via moth" superpower in the books.

Finally someone explains the eagles decently. Jackson screwed them up big time

I for one, am getting very impatient of the lack of trailer for Desolation :(

I think Man of Steel is the most likely candidate for first trailer/teaser this summer given that it's probably one of the biggest movies this summer, it's a fellow WB movie, and it's 6 months out from when DoS is released which, IMO, is good timing for the first teaser

I agree 100% and it will be with Man of Steel, no doubt.

As if there wasn't enough reason to see MoS! Can't wait if it happens.
