He gives orcs the business that's for sure. Laketown was alright. A big reason the action is better is that the elves are just much more enjoyable to watch

How was Evangeline Lilly overall? Was there a romance subplot between Tauriel & Legolas?

She wasn't bad, she feels like she is a part of this world and only people who read the books will know she's not suppose to be there. Yeah there is a romantic triangle between her, Legolas, and I believe Fili.

:barf:

Now clean that up!

:cmad:

It's not like a focal point. Her and Fili share a scene and Legolas is watching them. You can tell they're attracted to each other and that Legolas wants her and is jealous but they never delve into it.

Its not nostalgia, the decision to shoot digitally had major implications for everything from set design to makeup and has hurt these films aesthetically. It has created situations in which the actors don't feel comfortable working on the movie. None of this has done a single damn thing to help the films. Jackson himself knew he wasn't the ideal person to make these movies. He did, and he's hardly above criticism for his choices.

Never said he was above criticisms, but I've yet to see a good one regarding why he shouldn't have shot 3D. I've yet to see a bad thing in the films that came from that decision. And newsflash Del Toro would have had 3D as well. This isn't a Jackson thing. This decision pre dates him as director. And please for the love of god stop acting like McKellans breakdown is the average day on those sets. An old man broke down. A single actor on a single day on a single shot out of how many shots out of how many actors over a year of production. And jackson fixed the issue. No one is uncomfortable on that set not like you're making it out to be. Also jackson included that breakdown in the behind the scenes features so clearly the dude isn't afraid to show his ****ups. And further more McKellan is a grown ass man who doesn't need us to coddle him. Acrors have been put through hell for their craft. Hitchcock caused nervous breakdowns in his actors (on the set of psycho he actually went at his actress with a real knife) Kubrik did the same kind of crap. Jackson is a teddy bear and an honestly loveable guy to his people but McKellan had a moment of weakness so I guess...BURN JACKSON!!!

Kili.

What can you say about the fight scene in laketown with legolas and tauriel fighting orcs?

Umm, its as you expect. Legolas and Tauriel are killing machines. The stand out scene for them is the barrel one in the middle of the movie.

Liam, can you tell me if the dwarves get more character development and screen time in general this time around?

I guess so, its not much but you get some here and there for like Balin and Kili. But most of them are just there.

Jackson. And guess what? Forced perspective and the lack of that technique hasn't been a problem in either film. To everyone, Can we take off the rosy tinted nostalgia glasses and drop the whole lets damn all new techniques and forget that old techniques had flaws too attitudes? Jackson rectified the Mckellan situation asap. We've seen other instances of Mckellan having trouble with basic direction. The man is set in his ways and has his process. Hes gonna run into obstacles. Jackson isn't the devil cause the old man cried and 3D isn't some new witchcraft. Tired of hearing nothing but *****ing in this thread about **** that's here to stay. Its driving me bonkers.

That^. Too many whiny b****** in here.

And to pre-empt the "we're just expressing our opinion!". Yeah, that's one thing, however continuously harping on it for over a year is something else entirely. Build a bridge and get the f*** over it already. Ye've turned this thread into a $#!+hole.

Your mouth is the only **** hole around here, young man.

thanks for sharing, jacobed, glad you liked this one a bit better than the first one.

No, he wasn't a fan of 3D at that time, he didn't even shot Pacific Rim with 3D cameras (it was after the post convertion of Pacific Rim he became somewhat a fan of 3D)

i'm not saying GdT would have wanted to shoot in 3D (for the record, not a 3D fan at all, the only time it's truly added something essential to the experience for me was Gravity) but GdT might have done it anyways cuz he might not have chosen to pick a battle over it...since you know the other producers probably would have been pushing for it and the studio definitely would have been.

The film would have still be shot on digital. It was never shooting on film. Which would you rather have digital and post conversion 3d or digital and native 3d? That was the only question that came into it. If your gonna shoot digital and the studio will pay for native 3d might as well go native so at the very least you can guarantee the 3d on screen is your doing and not a post conversion studio's doing. And since the film was always going to be digital and WB was always going to want 3D and was willing to pay for native it was always going to be digital and native 3D. At this point its time to accept it and move on.

that's a non-issue, the issue is shooting in 3D. They probably would benefit more if they shot with IMAX cameras, now that would have been awesome

Don't care, i don't watch movies in 3D, apart from Gravity, it doesn't add anything to the movie, it's just a gimmick for extra dollars in the ticket prices

If you have read the article i've posted, you probably would have noticed that GDT fought with the studio (and won) for not shooting Pacific Rim in 3D, guess what, the studio is the same as the Hobbit: Warner Bros Pictures. So saying he was going to be forced anyway is not true, even more when the Hobbit is a well-known propriety that would definitely be a blockbuster monster whether it would be 3D or not and Pacific Rim was a more risky project because it was an original story with a big budget.

None of us know what would've happened with GdT on board, except for some decent guesses at his visuals based on his past films.

We do know he would have shot on digital. We also know wb would have wanted 3D. This isn't wild guesses here. Its the business and its predictable. These films were gonna be 3D and digital.

HFR however was an unnecessary complication that hasn't panned out in a financial way. I won't argue that. WB really should have said no to that.

Frankly I don't care what happened on Pacific Rim. It was a passion project with GDT running his ship. Very different. With Hobbit GDT was a single cog in a massive machine that could survive without him. A machine with Jackson as executive produce. If the studio wanted native they would have gotten it here. The Hobbit is massive and tiers above Pacific Rim. I don't think for a second WB would have ever seriously considered a poor conversion 3d option when they could do native at no financial risk and cut out a conversion studio.

Jackson's trilogy is a glorified beta test anyways. We will see the true prowess (or inadequacy) of HFR with Cameron's Avatar 2.

That's gonna be insanity if the stories are true. I had read that its supposed to employee 24, 48, and even 60 fps depending on the scene. I don't even know how they expect people to watch that considering a movie of solid 48 fps takes minutes for people to adjust. If the film is bouncing between frame rates you'd think itd give the audience a migraine.

It's basically supposed to be an evolution compared to talkies from silent film.

I saw an advance screening tonight... let me just say this....

One of my favorite books growing up was The Hobbit, a story that was child-friendly and whimsical, yet contained a rousing personal adventure that could appeal to all ages.

I look forward to the day when someone makes a movie based on that book.

I gave up on this current "epic trilogy" right around the time that Thorin Oakenshield balanced on the tip of Smaug's nose while hurtling down a mineshaft before swinging away on a chain like some kind of MMORPG fantasy Tarzan. Ugh.

lol

Seems like I was right to be worried about the [blackout]Dwarves getting chased by Smaug scene.[/blackout]

Sorry, if I didn't put that in spoiler tags, but it's not a pivotal part of the movie or anything. But no... I'm not even joking. I actually said "REALLY..?" out loud when it happened, and I'm not the kind of person who talks at the screen at movies.
