Personally I wish they'd just let Star Wars go away for a while.

If you ignore the cartoons, by the time Episode 7 hits, it would be 10 years of hiatus. But like what some of the others have said, we haven't had a new movie in 30 years. ;)

I can tell JJ was humbled by the experience post-Into Darkness. It's not a bad movie at all. It was well directed, had great visuals and pacing. It just didn't have an interesting story to tell, and by the third act, it felt like the writers abandon the script.

Well, so far this sequel is getting better reviews than the 1st movie and I loved that so I am pretty sure I will love this as well.

Will have to watch the 1st one again, due to strange circumstances I havent watched it since the cinema.

He seems to be taking the criticism and considering it. That is a very good thing imo. It is the exact opposite of those that have hit the big time. See Peter Jackson. :o

I CAN'T comment on 'DoS' yet. I haven't seen it.

In the end, I'm rooting for Peter. He does seem like a nice guy but IF the movie doesn't work for me to a possible excessiveness, it would make me sad. Sad because even a nice guy like Jackson can be changed by wealth and power. Not by greed or being a prick; but a disconnect to reality.

Peter does seems like an awesome person. I want these movies to work. I am rooting for it, but I just can't trust it after his last few films.

humbled by...? box office? didn't a lot of critics like that movie (for reasons unknown to me, baaaad script)?

We're nerds. The only critics that matter are us.

I don't think wealth and power have much to do with Peter's decisions. He seems to want to contribute to the development of cinema with his framerate stuff. It's just not working out as well as intended, judging from the comments here.

FWIW: I'm certainly no Tolkien purist. Some of my ideas would've had the professor doing sommersaults in his coffin.

if the movie doesn't work for you, PJ has a disconnect to reality? what about all the people it does work for?

Time, Salon, Hollywood Reporter, Variety, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Empire, BFCA (Critic's Choice), Hitfix, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out, PopMatters, and many, many more have already praised this movie for better action and better pacing than AUJ. i don't think PJ is completely deaf to criticism.

I saw it last night as my theaters employee screening. I really liked it. It's a great fantasy quest epic...and Smaug kicked all kinds of ass. I love the angles that Peter Jackson throws into his movies, how he has the camera weaving around the action in every direction.

Well that's the thing, there has been continual cartoons and themeparks and merchendise and what have you where as with Trek, besides tie-in books continuing, it largely went away for several years when Enterprise was cancelled. It made the 2009 film far more welcome.

To all of you *****ing about Smaug's limbs in the clips and all that.

Nothing was changed. He uses his wing arms like front legs. And the shots were too tight to see the wing parts.

Have you seen the film? How would that work with the way the shown moving? They're pretty thick for being that kind of limb and usually with that kind of thin the wings are almost made up fingers, you know.

Compare this to

to the Hungarian Horntail from Potter and you can see what I'm refurring to.

The limbs in the first film definitely seem like something more like this.

I don't really have a preference either way but that those are two pretty different portrayals of dragon wings and I just wonder at what point they finally made the decision to go with the 4 limbed design.

Also keep wondering about what del Toro was thinking about.

Phantasm's post reminded me: has anyone seen the music video of Kermit playing 'Hurt'? It's demented and hilarious.

Sad Kermit is the best, though you think of any NIN song he'd play "Piggy."

There's another vid where Kermit sings Elliot Smith's "Needle in the Hay" and recreates the suicide seen from the Royal Tennenbaums. It is fantastic.

But yeah, the Hobbit or whatever...

Yes I just saw the film.

His wing arms also work like legs.

But is it really consistent with what was seen in the first movie? I only ask because the shots from Unexpected Journey show almost up to his "elbow" such as it were and I'm having a hard time imaging where the wings would come into play.

Oh well, if Otachi can having wings, with its weird limbs, then surely Smaug can with no problem.

What shots?

Also, Smaug isn't a Hungarian horntail. He uses his wings like limbs and stomps around with them.

See gifs above and on other pages.

Whatever they did in the new film I just have a hard time seeing the limbs from the first film as being parts of wings.

I might go watch the Hobbit Part 2 with my friend after her final exams. I can't wait to watch Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Smaug.

I watched the Hobbit Part 1 twice with my two different friends at the two different movie theaters. The first viewing was good, and IMO, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is far superior to the Hobbit Part 1. The overuse of CGI bothered me which something I don't like about. The second viewing was, ugh, boring and very long. I couldn't stand watching the near 3 hours of that movie with my other friend. Anyways, overall, the Part One is good though.

The first Hobbit film really grew on me when I revisited on HBO a few weeks ago. There are still some moments and shots that still really irk but overall I think I would have liked it a lot more the first time had I not seen it in 48 fps.

Did you miss earlier in this thread the gifs posted? The extended edition changed the look of his limbs. Because his final look most likely was not decided upon during the original release of the film.

So it has been changed then.

I see that now

The Vile One was acting like we were all nuts for saying it had been changed.
