My sister just called *****ing about how much she hated this movie.

Family bonding is important .

Smaug was an amazing creation. I loved the second half of the film.

Excluding the battle with Smaug in the caverns, I enjoyed the film. It is an immense improvement over its precursor, and does a good job of synthesizing the Hobbit as well as the Appendices. I am looking forward to the next film and seeing how it is concluded. On the front of merchandise, I have to express my disappointment with the absence of a scaled Smaug figure. I was hoping they would release one, so I could place it beside the scaled Toho Godzilla and soon-to-arrive Knifehead (from Pacific Rim) figures on my desk.

How did Smaug know Thorin is called "Oakenshield" even though he overtook Erebor before Thorin shielded himself with an Oak? Smaug seems to know a lot about current evens for a dragon that did nothing but sleep with gold for a while. I guess birds happen to gossip all around the mountain about contemporary stuff and he speaks their bird tongue.

did they send in Kili to get the weapons in Lake-town with an injured leg? He ended up screwing up that entire little mission when he fell down the stairs.

Anyone mind shedding some light on that?

I enjoy the movie alot, really fun and pretty awesome spectacle...lacked the heart I expect from a middle earth movie though.

I thought Journey was definitely better, which I didn't expect it to be.

There's potential for an Unexpected Journey joke in here somewhere...don't know how to word it exactly, but it's there.

Seriously, if we have a character like Tauriel, why can't we have Arwen at Helm's Deep?

But if Arwen can fight at Helms Deep, why is Eowyn forced to hide in the caves with Rohan's entire female population?

A leader is needed to guide the women and children. Plus, it was her arc to realize her wants to be in the battle of men in Pelennor Fields and slay what no man could.

Overall, I was pleased with the movie so I'll state the things that stuck out for me:

What I liked:

The Werebear.

The spider scene was done to perfection.

Legolas and Tauriel weren't in the book, but I don't think this should be a complaint. They added to the movie. Legolas was just as badass as his older self.

Luke Evans.

The Necromancer revealing his true identity.

Smaug. (aside from enjoying Cumberbatch's Tim Curry impression). All I got to say is wow. Wow! WOW!!!

"I See Fire". Its such a wonderful song. I'm glad it was chosen to close the film to make up for the final scene.


What I didn't like:

King Thranduil. He was a complete and total assh*le!

The barrel chase scene. I knew it wasn't in the book and was done for action purposes, but that whole scene was over the top especially when that one dwarf did like 8 barrel rolls on the bank. I was like COME ON!

Too much time wasted on Laketown. I swear 30 minutes could've been shaved off.

The ending. I knew there was going to be a cliffhanger, but what an emotional gut punch that was! :angry

What really gets on my nerves is how there was 1 or 2 more dwarves with Kili, but for some reason they all decided to pile the weapons on him. If they had just done it without Kili, they would've successfully gotten the weapons. It's like they wanted to get caught. Dammit, Jackson. If you're gonna have someone fall down the stairs, at least make it Bombur.

Anyway, DoS was a great film. I've seen it twice now and I think I'll give it 2 more cinematic viewings.

I wouldn't mind! I would like to see some adventures of Legolas and Gimli after the ring.

Nah, they are trying to be quiet, everyone is starring,huge loud noise in the quiet, etc. No one is even aware what is going on in the spider scene.

I wondered that too, my friend concluded with "well since Smaug knew about Sauron as well, someone must have been his informant".

Well this was....fine, I guess. I mean, I think I enjoyed it more than the first one, but I found a lot of the action toward the end to be quite tedious, and some of the action earlier in the film to be just a little too silly. Also wasn't fond of the "love triangle" at all. I'd give it a 6.5/10.

On a side note, I do not get Jackson's infatuation with Legolas. *shrug*

There's a lot of deleted footage that if added back in would enhance the movie.

Gandalf being attacked by Thrain in Gol Dulgur. What happens to Thrain after he flees the battle at Moria.
Gandalf talking to Beorn outside.
Bilbo complaining about he should of never ventured east and Bard asking him why he went on the journey.
The company carrying Bombur in Mirkwood.

Loved the Gimli reference. My audience seemed to dig it too.

Overall I'd say it was better than the first one. Loved the Sauron reveal and the dynamic amongst the Dwarves. Loved the Barrel scene and everything about Smaug.

...but still doesn't hold a candle to the LOTR Trilogy.

Somebody in my theatre (no, it wasn't me) yelled "you've GOT to be kidding me" and everyone laughed.

I had a similar situation. It's kinda funny how upset people got. Don't get me wrong I totally get it but I wasn't that upset as it really was more of me just taking it in stride...

Same with most of my audience. There were a few "Aww." And groans but it was all done with a laugh. Didn't see anyone pissed off or anything that's for sure.

After people *****ed about ROTK having about 6 never-ending endings, I wouldn't be surprised if this sucker punch ending to DoS was a massive kiss my ass from Jackson.
