Official 'The Hobbit' Thread - - Part 16

Why do you guys even hang out in this thread if you don't like any of the Hobbit films?

Did this clip get posted?

Good stuff.

I read that Beorn only has one scene, and Legolas' chase of Bolg is cut entirely. :( That sucks, as those were two things I was really looking forward to. Hopefully the extended edition has a couple more scenes for those two story threads.

With the numerous threads left unresolved (Legolas’ pursuit of Bolg at Smaug’s finale is abandoned entirely) and key appearances truncated (Beorn’s return lasts a single shot), we can look forward to the certainty of a far weightier Extended Edition this time next year.

Sorry, Beorn fans.:(

But this thread is for the movies, which you clearly do not enjoy. However, its not my business to tell you where and where not to post. Just wish there was more positivity up in here. :p

The wiser thing to do would be to ignore the thread and film entirely, but I can't blame purists and book fans for their curiosity. Even if I outright hated the films Id still be very curious about Jackson's choices and changes so you'd still find me in here. As a fan of Tolkiens world and filmmaking in general the choices of Jackson do fascinate me as much as they sometimes baffle me.

But I do enjoy these films and am very much looking forward to this film. Im just a little disappointed by some of Jackson's choices. Hopefully some of the issues I have can be fixed or helped by the extended edition.

I still haven't seen any of the Hobbit movies. I need to change that before the 17th.

Just so I've got this straight:

SPOILERS AHEAD

SPOILERS

- Legolas rides a ****ing bat
- Legolas kills Bolg
- Fili is killed unceremoniously by Azog
- Kili dies defending Tauriel
- Beorn is in the movie for a matter of seconds
- Dain is CG 95% of the time, is a comedic character, and isn't crowned king
- Thorin's funeral isn't shown

Amazing. Three, three-hour films based on a 300-page book, and they still drop iconic scenes.

Some of the choices do seem pretty odd. However, I haven't seen the actual movie so its too early to judge. Maybe Legolas does get a duel with Bolg, just not a continuation of the chase. I would have thought that all these characters would get multiple scenes to shine, as I expected the runtime to be quite a bit longer than it is.

The Beorn thing is really bizarre. It seems like a cynical ploy to sell more extended editions.

He was an interesting character in the second film, but didn't have enough to do. I thought for sure he would have a big part in the battle. Considering he can transform into a freaking giant bear. :p

But Legolas tho

The rumor that started on IMDB about the Extended cut being 3 hours and 20 minutes might not be far off the mark. I really didnt think there would be much difference between the theatrical and extended cuts of BTFA, but it sounds like Jackson went at this film with a butcher knife to get it within a normal runtime. Hopefully we get more of Beorn and
to see Thorin's funeral in the EE.

The comingsoon.net review states that PJ's decision to balloon the story out across three films pays off in the end. I shall see about that. But I won't be able to see the film until January.

Wow. This is like dropping Darth Vader's death so that you can show a scene of Jar Jar Binks tap dancing.

What the **** were these people thinking?

Seriously, this thing is now more like a video game than a movie. A lifeless wad of computer generated visuals providing an empty husk of a story for adolescent males. Heck, there are video games with better storytelling and pacing.

Yes, in a film in which a lowly hobbit teaches a greedy dwarf king that the simple pleasures of life are worth far more than riches or gold.* The cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy is baffling.

*unless they cut that part too

They haven't cut Thorin's death. Just the funeral, and as much as I want to see it, its not strictly necessary.

You mean a film in which a dwarf prince battles the odds to reclaim his kingdom, a wizard uncovers an evil conspiracy, and an elf prince defies all laws of physics to become the most powerful being in Middle-earth.

Oh, and there happens to be a hobbit who is just there for the ride.

It really should have been 4. ;) He could have split the last part into 2 parts as everyone else does.

I could spout off a list of things in these movies that are far from necessary (still in the movies though!), but I'd run the risk of using up the rest of SHH's bandwidth.

This is a heartfelt moment in the book that

brings a more complete sense of finality to a principle character's story arc, and a sense of closure for all parties involved

And it's on the cutting room floor to make room for overblown set pieces, many of which starring a character that doesn't appear in the book. There's no justifying it.

Lets spend 7 hours with these characters, and then drop stuff like this. :funny:

Yes he should. If his father and his people go to war he would of course be there with them. The only reason he wasn't in the book is because Tolkien hadn't invented him yet.

There's no particular reason for him to be such a major character in a story already over stuffed with characters.
