But at least they otherwise treated Dain seriously and with respect, what with him [blackout]becoming the King of Erebor for decades to come.[/blackout]

AMIRITE :awesome:??

I thought Billy Connolly's face looked awfully fake in the movie. Just looked it up... apparently they CGI'd his mouth because he couldn't remember the lines on set due to Alzheimers. Okaaaaaay....

That reads like satire. Say it ain't so, Greens. But then again, go ahead. I couldn't care less at this point.

:csad: about Connolly.

:lmao: about their solution.

Seriously... is this real life, for real in this world? I have no words.

It seems to be the case that everything that gets ****ed up on a movie results in more CGI. Based on that metric, The Hobbit's production must have been pretty ****ed up.

^ How in the heck else would you have expected them to deal with Connolly's Parkinson's Disease making it impossible for him to deliver his lines on set? Spend more money in a last-ditch scramble to find somebody else to play the role? Cut the character entirely?

I'm giving everybody whining about this a gigantic

Use a flip-chart? That worked for Graham Chapman when he was too drunk to remember his own name.

Or an ear-piece under his helmet?

So many non-CGI solutions seem to suggest themselves.

His whole face looked CGI to me. Was it really just the mouth?
Oh and I heard PJ say in an interview that the Extended cut will be about 30 minutes longer.

Yeah his whole face looked too "smooth" to be real. I suppose they just changed his whole face because having a CG mouth looked awkward.

Here is a review of Billy Connolly's latest live standup show.

Somehow, with the aid of a few notes, he acquitted himself very well.

Here are the 20+ dates for his tour of Australia.

Are we really to believe that he could not deliver his few lines to the camera while in costume? Or is this a rather tasteless attempt to obfuscate another inexplicable resort to ugly CGI by Peter Jackson?

The CGI on his face was actually quite good. Its just easier to notice that its fake when it is a cg human face.

Supposedly the crew decided it was a lost cause and sent him home. I see no other reason to have Dain be CGI. Then again, who really knows with these movies.

I wonder if Connolly's contract prevents him from suing for libel.

I'm about to watch The Hobbit: Battle Of Five Armies. I'll post my opinion on it in about 3 hours. Although I've already read a review in the newspaper which was very positive.

Have posters with his lines off camera for him to read (Marlon Brando did this). Have an earpiece in his cowl to feed him his lines. Reshoot the scene until you get it right. Or, if need be, recast the role if it just isn't working.

Coulda shoulda woulda. Alzheimer's can effect various cognitive abilities including reading skills and listening comprehension as well as memory and sufferers have good days and bad days. Since none of us were on set and I assume none of us have Alzheimer's perhaps we should just show some class and let this one go. Dain's barely on screen in the theatrical cut. Its unfortunate but hardly a big ****ing deal.

Yeah his part wasn't very big. And part of his face was covered by a big helmet anyway, until he took it off.

Another thing that was great in this movie, were the creature designs. I won't spoil anything, but there were some very creatively designed trolls in this movie. I loved getting to see some more variety.

Marvolo is it only not a big deal because of all the other horse poo this series has brought the world? :oldrazz:

No one is defending it. We're just saying given the circumstances its far from funny. And laughing about it or taking cheap shots at it is distasteful.

No one is laughing at Connelly having Parkinsons. We are laughing at Peter Jackson's ridiculous solution to the problem. Which is hilarious.

Any excuse for Peter. I bet he was hoping one of the leads got really sick during filming so he could replace them with a CGI stand-in. Not life threatening, but simply unable to film.

Real life becomes more like The Simpsons every day.

The only CGI that distracted me was the face. I didn't feel it was as overused or tacky as the last two. Getting out of the dark caves and more outside locales definitely helped the visuals a bit.

My full thoughts on the movie here.
