...damn, I'm so glad I paid little attention watching the last one. I enjoyed Desolation of Smaug overall and Unexpected Journey to a lesser extent but yeeeesh.

Its actually pretty good cgi as far as human models go. And I think it looks worse in still pictures like the one above. In motion he blends pretty well with the overly airbrushed photography of the hobbit trilogy.

Yeah. Really glad they went CG there. The difference is night and day.

Looking at the 'after' photo, I'd say that scene isn't CGI. There seems to be a lot of Dain that is though.

actually its been confirmed that Dain is 100% CGI in the film

On another note did y'all know that Christopher Plummer was offered the role of Gandalf before Ian McKellen?

Originally, it was actor Christopher Plummer – famous for his role as Captain von Trapp in the beloved musical The Sound Of Music – who the studio approached to play the role. Of his decision to turn down Middle-Earth’s favourite wizard (something he has since admitted to regretting), Plummer said:

“I don’t know why I turned it down. I thought 3 or 4 years in New Zealand… I thought there were other countries I would like to visit before I croak. It was a marvellous part and I loved The Lord Of The Rings. I grew up on it actually. It is a great, great, great book and then it became a great film.”

I knew that Sean Connery was offered the role, but I hadn't heard about Plummer.

Unlike Connery, Christopher Plummer actualy seemed to understand the plot of Lord of the Rings. Connery now regrets not having taken the role due to how much money those films got.

Connery wasn't right for the role, and I'm not sure he would have taken it seriously.

Is anyone going to the Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition screening event tonight? It's playing at two theaters by me, but I really don't feel like going. I can wait another month since I'll be picking it up on Blu-ray anyway. An extra 20 minutes doesn't justify me paying $13 to sit through it in a theater again no matter how curious I may be about the R rating.

No. In the interview, Plummer says he was a fan of LOTR but what kept him from taking on the role was the long shoot in New Zealand.

I think Plummer would have made for a good Gandalf, but it's impossible to imagine anyone but McKellen in the role now.

I could see Oldman doing it in a couple of years.

But McKellen nailed it. Even in this trilogy, he and Freeman did the best with what they had.

Even with Hobbit, i don't think the actors ever draged anything down, i found most of the acting strong.

The acting was probably the best part about the Hobbit trilogy. No matter how overboard Jackson may have gone with CGI or creative story decisions, the actors still gave it their all.

Christopher Plummer could probably have been a decent Gandalf (or Saruman, or maybe even Theoden), but I can't see he or anyone else being as good as Ian McKellen.

Actually, IMO, the entire LOTR trilogy was perfectly cast across the board. I wouldn't change anyone.
