Official 'The Hobbit' Thread - - Part 18

Ecthelion isnt in the LOTR movies. Its a reference to the book character.

Do you also get mad when the standalone MCU films mention characters from the other films or from the comics?

I don't see what the big deal is with an Ecthelion reference. He's long dead before Lord of the Rings begins.

Geeze.....the things people find to complain about.

The only reason they put that line in the movie was because they wanted to reference Gondor... which is in LoTR, unlike Echtelion, of course nobody cares about Echtelion.

I know right? Some people. :argh:

Look, I'm perfectly aware that this is nothing more than a pet-peeve of mine, and it's obviously not the reason I was disappointed by these movies* but hey... it might be a little thing, but it's still an annoying little thing.

* That would be Bilbo relegated in a secondary role, Jackson forcing us to play a "Where's Beorn?" game, the over the top cartoonish violence, the focus on characters nobody cares about, the ridiculization of Smaug in DoS, etc... so many to choose from!

I don't see what's wrong with referencing Gondor. I'd say it is an important enough nation that it would probably be name dropped fairly often by the folks of Middle-Earth.

I cannot reconcile Legolas and Tauriel having more screentime and more importance to the narrative than Beorn.

Just watched Hobbit The Battle Of The Five Armies on Digital HD.
The extended action sequences were cool but somewhat cartoony especially Alfrid's death in the trolls mouth, kept expecting Alfrid to slide out of the troll's mouth still alive unscathed it was just that goofy & laughable.:hehe: Disappointed that there wasn't more Tauriel in the extended cut, & the funeral of Thorin, Fili & Kili, was brief & very little thought put into it it seems.

The funeral scene was good. It didnt need to be more than it was.

And there was already too much Tauriel in the Theatrical Cut.

"Why does it hurt?!"

"Cause it was real."

Personally, I opt to just focus on Thranduil in that scene and just ignore Tauriel, but maybe that's just me :oldrazz: (as if my avatar weren't enough indication as to who one of my fav characters in BOTFA was)

I saw the extended cut and it was MAGNIFICENT! Really great! I wish it had more of Saruman, Tauriel and Beorn though.

Deleted Scene: Bilbo Plants his Acorn in Dale

[YT]FbjoNUVny-4[/YT]

That should have been put back in the Extended Cut. I guess some of the scenes we heard about (Gandalf's vision of Sauron's victory for example) really were shot, but didn't even make it into the Extended Cut.:( Hopefully this isn't the only deleted scene in the special features.

*The film and the special features are currently available through Digital retailers. Physical release hits stores November 17.

That scene gave me real Lord of the Rings vibes. Why they didn't put it back in is beyond me.

and it had a similar score to the scene where gandalf comforts frodo in moria. Love that music. The scene wouldn't have made sense in the movie since he plants it at bag end apparently (going off the comments on youtube, don't personally remember as i haven't seen this since the cinema)

The movie doesn't show him planting the acorn at Bag End. In the first act he tells Thorin he intends to plant it at Bag End but it's never shown and it'd be understandable that he would plant it in Dale in the spur of the moment. Especially since he must know he may not survive the Battle but at least it will have a chance in the soil in Dale.

A member over on Blu-ray.com posted this in the BOTFA EE blu-ray thread:

Watching the features they didnt cut it for content. They actually wanted it in. Although im sure it would have been edited. Just most of the stuff wasnt done cgi wise and couldnt get finished in time.

However I'm pretty pissed the amazing sequence of Beorn killing a bajillion orcs then knocking down a giant troll and ripping his throat out was cut. Coolest damn thing ive ever seen. The animatic was awesome.

There are a LOT of deleted scenes in the special features. Most should have made the film. Also Thanduril has some anamatics as well originally the idea was he taught legolas so he was even more badass taking down trolls by himself but eventually they decided to make it more personal with him and reserved.

There is an amazing scene with Gandalf and him with great acting. Really annoyed they cut it.

So the truth comes out. They literally ran out of time and had to release a truncated version of BOTFA to theaters because most of the battle's cgi couldn't be completed by the film's release date. They pushed the film back from July to December and they still couldn't finish it on time...Jackson really needs to get his house in order. If he can't get his film's post-production finished by the release dates then he needs to start giving himself more time and stop dumping new stuff on the vfx department at the last minute.

They couldn't get it finished in time?!?! What else were they doing for the past year? It's not like they had another Hobbit movie to work on.

**** if I know. But if I had to guess the cause of it, I would guess that he kept changing the designs and adding new creatures and scenes to the battle. In the special features of DOS EE blu-ray he is shown changing designs at the last minute and adding new stuff even though there wasn't really time for the vfx artists to do what he wanted. It caused a serious headache for the vfx artists. Considering how many vfx were in BOTFA, it doesn't surprise me that they weren't even able to finish it.

Jackson is really fraying at the seams as a director. It's like he has no sense of schedules or the consequences of his actions. For that matter it's like he doesn't care if he releases a busted half assed version of his films to theaters.

At this point it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that PJ cares a lot more that things "look cool" than about creating a decent, complete movie. Sure the movie had to be released only half-done, but didn't the battles LOOK COOL???

Doesn't Throrin as he's dying tell Bilbo to plant his trees? Anyway I liked the scene a lot, other than one thing. It seems like quite a long conversation to have in the middle of a battle

That's true. Only because the battle is raging all around them. With a little tampering, it could have worked. If they had it in a more enclosed area like Gandalf and Pippin's conversation about death in Return of the King, it would have been fine.

Well yeah but only because he didnt know Bilbo had already planted it and Bilbo simply didnt correct him.

I think it would have worked fine but I agree its in the middle of a battle and maybe goes on just a wee bit too long but its a nice moment so I could forgive it being a bit unrealistic.

that's kind of how i'm feeling. It's an amazing scene and dat score, but it could really use some editing to make it seem like the battle isn't going on right in front of them. The Pippen and Gandalf scene mentioned is an example of heartfelt battle convos being done perfectly, as they were walled off and not currently fighting. Just watched again and noticed the orcs were prosthetic here

Can't wait to grab my Five Armies extended blu ray soon. Not long now. Never got to see the film in the theater and opted to wait for the EE.
