It's debatable, but From Hell and Watchmen I thought were fairly respectable, considering.

In a hole in the ground, there went a Hobbit.

Question answered.

Alan Moore is a bit crazy, but when it comes to his films, I don't think he is wrong. He hasn't had one good adaptation.

I liked V for Vendetta, Watchmen, and From Hell. League of Extraordinary Gentelmen was pure **** imo.

The harry potter films also got me into the books. Havent read any James Bond books yet.

The Bond books aren't great imo, but I am still glad I read a few of them. Namely CR, FRWL, Thunderball and OHMSS.

LOL, as Homer Simpson said in that infamous ep., if celebrities didn't want us pawing through their garbage or saying they're gay, then they shouldn't have tried to express themselves creatively.

From Hell is okayish. I can kind of get behind that. V and Watchmen do the one thing I hate in adaptation. They miss the point. They capture the visuals fairly well, but they are blunt, missing the elegance and ideas.

Superkal

Christopher Tolkien who heads the estate is like 90 years old and not a fan of the idea of his grandfathers work being put to film. Its not that he was displeased with the adaption (which he was) its more about the fact that in his mind no one can do it right. The man is of a different generation and failed to see that by Jackson making popular films he has drawn in even more fans of tolkien's work. Christopher also misses what JRR Tolkien set out to do. Which was, by his own admission, to give England a true mythology they could call their own. Tolkien always considered Arthur to be of french origin. As you know, im sure, mythology is handed down and changed and transformed by future generations. Jackson has done just that. He has taken JRR Tolkien's mythology and given it to a new generation in a new light. If Christopher cant see that due to his own bullheadedness not much can be done.

sounds like a family feud, to me

Idk. Does Christopher have children?

Before Jackson's film i knew literally nothing about LOTR. I had never even heard of it. At 11, I was a star wars junkie. It is because of Jackson I became interested in Tolkien and his works. While i see and recognize the faults in Jackson's films, I will never damn them. Without them I most likely would still to this day be ignorant of Tolkien amazing mythology.

this is exactly how it was and is for me, except on my end, it was Superman, Star Trek, and Godzilla

Hmm I read the books around 6-7 years before the films came out. I love both, I did not feel the "tone" was ruined at all. There were certain things that irked me but I understand the transfer to film and modern cinema does some things. I still love both very much, and I do think they are among the better adaptions out there.

But I can't believe that The Hobbit is just around the corner.

I know right! Seems like just yesterday I was reading about the production possibly moving to Eastern Europe. Development Hell was not fun.

Anyone hear about Ian Mckellen's breakdown on set yesterday? While filming on a green screen set, he started crying and shouted "this is not why I became an actor." I guess acting alone on a green screen set with your costars acting together on another set has been a huge issue.

It's so close, I can feel it!

I heard about this about a month ago. It happened during production. It was during the bag end scenes. They had a scale set built for the dwarves and bilbo. McKellen was off to the side in a green screen box acting by himself to be composited in later. McKellen got frustrated and lost his **** and Peter decided to do it differently from then on.

I understand why he got upset. Christopher Lee had similar frustrations on the Star Wars Prequel films. An actor of their caliber doesnt want to be shoved into a green box alone and told to act.

Ah. My friend just told me about it...said it happened yesterday.

Nah it was a while back. Unless McKellen had another breakdown during pickups lol. "Not the box, Peter! I WANT GO BACK IN THE BOX!!!"

Well the problem is that people now equate New Zealand with Middle Earth rather than England.

Yeah but who wants to think of middle earth as wet and dreary england. Sorry england. Wasnt New Zealand a part of the British Empire? Its kind of english.

IDK to be honest. I was referring to how it didn't really grow into the adopted mythos for England.

Either way, I think all of this activity will put some more life into the book franchise. I for one can't wait to pick up the books and read them for myself

If you havent read them before, brace yourself. Tolkien is wordy and old fashioned. It can be daunting for those who go in unaware. The Silmarillion will make you its *****. I suggest the audiobook of that one. Its a rewarding mythos if you can get into the books.

War McKellen. It is the truth.
