Christopher Tolkien who heads the estate is like 90 years old and not a fan of the idea of his grandfathers work being put to film. Its not that he was displeased with the adaption (which he was) its more about the fact that in his mind no one can do it right. The man is of a different generation and failed to see that by Jackson making popular films he has drawn in even more fans of tolkien's work. Christopher also misses what JRR Tolkien set out to do. Which was, by his own admission, to give England a true mythology they could call their own. Tolkien always considered Arthur to be of french origin. As you know, im sure, mythology is handed down and changed and transformed by future generations. Jackson has done just that. He has taken JRR Tolkien's mythology and given it to a new generation in a new light. If Christopher cant see that due to his own bullheadedness not much can be done.
Well, he's an old fart, he won't be around much longer. Who's going to take his place?
Christopher Tolkien told Le Monde that he didn’t like the films because “They eviscerated the book by making it an action movie for young people 15 to 25, and it seems that The Hobbit will be the same kind of film.”
There's hardly any action til the end in Two Towers
Lord of the Rings Ringwraith Hoodies!

Wow, there's lots of good stuff there. Love the Wargs, the female dwarves, and I like how the Goblin sorta look like naked-mole rats.
Great find, Boom.Anyone hear about Ian Mckellen's breakdown on set yesterday? While filming on a green screen set, he started crying and shouted "this is not why I became an actor." I guess acting alone on a green screen set with your costars acting together on another set has been a huge issue.
I heard about this about a month ago. It happened during production. It was during the bag end scenes. They had a scale set built for the dwarves and bilbo. McKellen was off to the side in a green screen box acting by himself to be composited in later. McKellen got frustrated and lost his **** and Peter decided to do it differently from then on.
I understand why he got upset. Christopher Lee had similar frustrations on the Star Wars Prequel films. An actor of their caliber doesnt want to be shoved into a green box alone and told to act.
Wow! I had no idea that McKellen lost his cool like that. Jeez man, crying...? Calm down, Gandalf. It's good that Peter changed how the scenes were done, though. Shows he actually cares about his actors.
You want your actors to have no emotions or passion? Weird.
Where did I say that? I said that the crying was too much. Crying is fine if it's for a scene, but other than that it doesn't fly with me unless the reasoning is good. His reasoning seemed dramatic, like he lashed out in tears because he was stressed.
Everything I ever read about or heard from the great actor themselves, it takes quite a bit to get into character. Emotional extremes are the norm. Those that wouldn't be that upset are the ones that would bother me.
Yep, but once in character the emotions are directed towards the requirements of the role. Actors are not expected to lash out like that on set, unless it's for a scene.
Sounds like you're making excuses for his behavior, which I don't agree with. I like the outcome, but I don't like what it took to get the outcome when it could have been achieved differently. I'm sure no one is a fan of Jackson's 15 takes, but you don't hear about them lashing out like that. Once again, I think it could have been handled differently.
Says who?
I am not making excuses for behavior because there is no excuse needed. Sir Ian McKellen can do what he wants, especially when he is right.
I simply brought up the 15 take thing because Peter just makes crap situations worse.
