Pacific Rim - Part 3

I get that critics have to look at certain things to judge a movie but I also see that when you dissect a movie, you can lose its meaning and enjoyability too. Critiquing a movie shouldn't just be a dissection of its parts but the movie as a whole.

Pacific Rim is one of those movies I can pretty much assume critics will hate because it fails to follow certain "critic approved" techniques inspite of how good or terrible it might turn out to be.

The movie has had poor marketing though. I've only seen a handful of so-so advertisements for it.

Lol.

That post screams "Asylum" all over it.

Well, the monster looks a little neat at least.

Judging cinematography is not really dissecting, though. Same if the storyline is weak and/or can't catch your interest. These are elements which jump at you, which you'd rather not notice, but when they are bad, they'll jump right at you. So when one notices such things, often it's the weaknesses of the movie itself which make you notice it. Otherwise everything would be fluid; when a movie really works, that all kind of becomes transparent and invisible.

Now, fanboys who nitpick about details so small like "I don't like how the cape hangs from his shoulders in that scene;" that's a whole 'nother story. That's DISSECTING a movie, and completely losing sight of its qualities, because it somehow didn't represent ones imagination. Or stuff like "why did they chose to do THAT story, why did they chose to do it LIKE THAT? I wanted it LIKE THIS." *cry* *whine

That's where criticism starts not to make sense anymore. Dudes, that's the story. You liked it? No? Okay. But there's absolutely no fault in that they told THAT one, instead the one you were hoping you'd get. That's where dissecting becomes counterproductive, not when weak cinematography jumps right into your eye.

They need to pick up the marketing for this. I know it'll be big after 4th of July but this movie is a hard sell, they need to start early

^^I can't lie, for a cheap knock off film, this movie has some great special effects. They must've had a pretty sizeable budget...again, for a cheap knock off film. lol

Trailer for Atlantic Rim.

They do all suck. They get stuck on cinematography and storyline and technical detail and usually miss out on the big picture of if it was worth watching.

If those three things suck, then there's a 95% chance it's not worth watching (not counting the So Bad, it's Good category).

Until you agree with them.

This. I disagree with the critics with Man of Steel (to which I say f**k the critics) and I don't usually mind when people say they don't trust critics, but not trusting critics at all after only one movie is pretty fickle and petty.

Its a case by case thing, cause we all know what we want in a film. Sometimes our wants line up with others and sometimes they don't line up at all. Just gotta take it in stride.

Exactly. My personal rule of thumb is that you should never fully trust critics, but at the same time you should never fully distrust critics because their opinions do hold some merit. Many of them have been trained to review movies whether through by film school or just having a huge love for cinema. Nevertheless, each individual critics, like each filmgoer in general, have aspects that they love about film and aspects that they hate.

Though to be fair, my love/hate relationships with the critics has been leaning more toward hate lately.

"Waaah, Arrested Development, why did you come back like this? I am so disappoint." Shut it. :o

Like the new avatar gents? :D

very much so. Is that from a new tv spot? I dont remember seeing Striker running like that in any of the footage I have seen so far.

On a different note it would be sad for me for this film to fail at the box office. With all the interviews and behind the scenes featurettes I have seen I feel that GDT has really put his heart into this film. I think I will really enjoy it and want it to appeal to a broad audience. Im worried that the appeal is not there.

I think the appeal is there, the rub is just getting people in the seats. It's hard to overcome their preconceived notions.

There's this thing called sturgeons law.

90% of everything sucks. Including critics. Many just nit pick, instead of something more helpful.

I think Devin's review of MoS sums it the best. It's the superman movie we've wanted to see for a long time. But there are major problems.

You think the critics are going to give Rim bad reviews? I'd be shocked if Rim got under an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics love Del Toro, no matter the quality, it will get a pass solely based on that. I really like Del Toro and just hope this isn't another Hellboy 2. A movie I find to be virtually unwatchable.

Seriously, I just don't see an under 80% rating. Maybe I should get ready for a surprise?

Maybe that's because Del Toro has mostly delivered in the past? I loved Hellboy II, and think it's much better than the first which I liked, but always felt uneven to me; the pace, especially, had its problems, and the movie kinda got lost in towards the end. I thought the sequel corrected lots of the first film's shortcomings, and had an incredible flow to it. God, I love that movie!

But with all its flaws, I still think Hellboy is a sweet, little genre movie, and that's mostly thanks to Del Toro's vision. The guy simply has character and vision. And that really shines through. Flawed or not, his movies are still more interesting than many others'.

Pacific Rim looks great, but the buzz just isn't there.

It's disappointing. Here we have an exciting big action movie made from an original idea and script. Yes it's high concept and giant monsters vs. giant robots is hardly a new subgenre. At the same time, its a bit of an obscure subgenre.

But if this movie fails, it will discourage studios and financiers from getting into similar projects which is disappointing.

But this is one of the few big summer movies that's not a sequel. It's not a remake. It's not a book. It's not based on a comic book. It's not based on an old TV show. It's not a reboot. But it's still a big investment and if it fails . . . oh boy :( .

I think this is definitely in the running for being a surprise hit, based on WOM.

No offense but I don't care if you liked Hellboy 2. I mean that's neat if you did I guess but I was solely addressing my opinion of the film. I wasn't implying that no one is allowed to like the film just because I hated it. And since I'm a fan of the director obviously I think he has mostly delivered in the past. I mean duh, how many times can a girl say she is a fan? Would I be a fan if I thought he only made bad films? For goodness sake I'm seeing this movie almost exclusively because he directed it, lord knows it's not the marketing bringing me in.
