Pacific Rim - Part 3

What I would love to see is more character interaction. We have almost, and I stress almost, too much kaiju and jaeger footage. My thirst for more I satisfied enough to want to move on.

The Edge trailer, and the clip from The Late Show really worked on me wanting to see more characters. I'd like to see scenes of dialog with Raleigh and Mako. Do they get along? Or are they going to bicker and disagree with each other? Things like that. I wanna see more of that.

I just feel like the Marketing people were like "big robots like Transformers! Show that only!"

Even though from the very beginning, this movie was going to be more than that. I guess someone didn't listen.

They aren't even playing up the mind meld. The little asian girl cowering in the alley from the monster is Hunman's character's partner when she was a kid, but they are barely making that connection in the trailer. Its just a random kid cowering with little purpose so its lost on the viewers. The bridge bares your deepest secrets which is rife with dramatic potential but its non existent in the marketing. Hunman's character and this other character are seeing each others souls their memories, fears, and all. That's great stuff. Market that ****.

How much say does GDT have in the marketing of Pacific Rim?

I think that's a contractual issue. Some directors want more control and have it in their contract. There's no way for us to know unless someone in the know lets us know.

I can see it now.

"Wait I thought this movie was about fighting giant monsters! Not looking into a persons mind to drive a transformer!"

Yeah I'm not sure what could be worse. A shallow robots vs monster movie with hints of depth like the marketing is making it seem like or a very deceptive marketing and pissed off viewers. The first possibility is probably better for BO, but bad for those looking for more than a shallow rockem sockem. The second possibility would be a disaster for the BO, but good for those looking for depth.

They just need to show that it is more serious than punching. I think the last Trailer/TV thing was going in the right direction. Just need 10 more of those (seriously).

Its our awareness that is low. Up until a week ago we concentrated on web and core. Campaign has just started. Summer is like that. Stay tuned.

I wonder what kind of viral marketing they could have. Having a giant jaeger trek through the ocean doesn't seem plausible.

Transformers had the advantage of being based on a popular toy and or cartoon. This movie looks weird, shallow and sorta like it's trying to cash in on Transformers popularity. Jamie summed it up, it looks like a pure fanboy movie. It's marketing is almost exclusively directed towards people who like what it is, who know not to expect a Transformers clone but a live action anime film. The truth is, only a big late push and funny enough the big robots and monsters can save it now. Warners and Legendary botched it's marketing from the get-go. Believe me, Legendary are hoping for a WWZ miracle but that film had Pitt and Jolie pushing it. One way or the other the Friday numbers are going to be interesting to watch. And not because we get any of the cash but because an original movie succeeding or failing is important if you want to see more than comicbook movies and sequels.

The problem with Pacific Rim was that it was marketed as all style, no substance movie in which they focus pretty much on the action when with movie's like this you need to also advertise emotion and heart. They haven't earned the luxury of just advertising action. Del Toro is not a director that can sell on name alone.

Well I was so into MoS that I know exactly when their stuff ramped up and it was exactly at two weeks before launch.

We had that day with 5-6 TV spots at once etc.

Here's to hope. Back away from the edge of it.

People did say that MoS marketing sucked and then all of a sudden it didn't.

Are you saying that you expect 100mil opening weekend for Rim, that MOS didn't have the advantage of being based on one of the most popular characters in pop culture? I'd compare it to WWZ more than Man of Steel.

Me? I'm not expecting anywhere near that. I'd be happy with half that or leading the weekend. Superman could get $50 mil even if the movie were 30 seconds long.

Apparently, the two-pilot concept is a lot more involved in the script than I initially assumed.

In the introduction for the Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero graphic novel, Travis Beacham, the scriptwriter, said that when he was first developing the story for Pacific Rim, he was having a hard time trying to find a reason for the audience to care about these characters that piloted the Jaegers.

However, when he finally came up with the two pilot concept, the story pretty much wrote itself. In his own words:

Travis Beacham said:
The realization that the Jaeger, in fact, needed not just one but two pilots changed everything. The whole thematic identity began to drift into focus and the story very briskly started pulling itself together. Suddenly, human beings mattered in those epic battles. Baggage mattered. Relationships mattered. Humanity quite literally drove the machines, and it was the difference between winning and losing. There was something worth fighting for. There was the threat of loss and the prospect of redemption. There was a knight in the suit of armor.

In other words, if not for the two pilot concept, the script for this film, much less the film itself, probably wouldn't even exist.

As far as predictions I'm starting at 40mil for Rim and I'm waiting to see how the marketing to the average joe plays out in these last couple of weeks before going higher. I'm still not ruling out an Inception/WWZ style opening weekend.

And, as a mecha fan, it was the main thing that put me off. Totally fine with it now though. :D

I have no ****ing idea....but it's hilarious. I'm sure it was made by someone from /m/ at 4chan. It's that type of video.

That sounds awesome.

I'm having problems predicting a B.O. weekend result because Grown-Ups opens that weekend and honestly, despite it most likely sucking, I can see it doing big numbers.
