Right now, Pacific Rim is at 84 % RT rating with 75 % Top Critic rating, it may settle at 80 % general rating and 70 % Top Critic rating, not bad.

Overseas I can see it performing better than US. But why are people writing it off ? It certainly look entertaining enough.

In what world does IM 3 with fake Mandarin, remotely controlled IM suits that get destroyed at the end is a better money making movie than Pacific Rim ?

In a world where general audiences don't give a flying f**k about the Mandarin twist, or about Optimus Prime sucking, or about Venom being half-assed.

A world where it's a sequel to the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time.

You are surprised that a sequel to two hit films in a series is going to make more money than a fanboy *********ory fantasy directed by a niche director and starring an actor from an FX T.V series?

Yeah, because, at least Del Toro's heart is in the right place.

why does Pacific Rim have to be reduced to a "fanboy *********ory fantasy" as you put it? So are you saying that fanboys of this genre are all pathetic and will lose their minds if it does not do well at the box office. I am a fan of this genre and look forward to seeing this movie. But I want more than just robot on Kaiju action. After seeing Pan's Labyrinth I feel that Del Toro can deliver. Otherwise this film would be reduced to one huge, mindless action set piece like Bay's Transformer films or White House Down. I wont like it if it does not do well at the box office but wont lose any sleep over it.

So Kanye West loves this film apparently. He's actively defending it on his twitter. lol

KANYE WEST ‏@kanyewest 3 Jul I saw a pre-screening of Pacific Rim yesterday and it's easily one of my favorite movies of all time.

This is not another "Robot" movie. Guillermo del Toro is a master.
lol. "All time"

You know it's serious when he uses those two words. :funny:

To those who have seen the film, how spoiled will I be going into the movie if I know that:

**MAJOR SPOILERS**

[BLACKOUT]Idris Elba's character dies.[/BLACKOUT]

**END SPOILERS**

I accidentally glanced at a comment and those words popped up in my face. Will it hurt the experience knowing that?

I agree. Wrong movie, bud. This is Pacific Rim, not Marvel's The Avengers! :word:

Best description ever haha.

Kinda shocked with the low ball reports the studio has been reporting. 30-40 million OW? Wow that's terrible. Would've expected 70-80 at least. I mean this is supposed to be the event movie this summer, outside of MoS, which didn't live up to expectations.

Would've needed wayyyy better marketing to hit 70-80.

I'm not surprised by this tracking.
The film simply doesn't look all that far removed from the B movie knock off's it has inspired. Those scenes with Gypsy in the hanger are just too gnarly looking and then we have those clips of the early mark jeagers...
Then we have this cast...

I have a feeling the studio may have wanted an inception like run away hit here but that film had alot more going for it in the marketing. 3 things in particular.
Nolan
TDK(Ledger)
Leo
150 Budget to boot.

Still can't believe the budget they gave this thing,
IM/TF/StarTrek all started out with that 150 like budget, all ILM and all somewhat established sci-fi. This bad boy was given close to 200...well I guess they saved some on marketing given what I've seen out and about. There was no way WB was coming out of this winning.
If it had to go down this way I personally think two things should have been done. A non friday release and a non summer release, two things to help a film save face I think.

Sad to say but the studio maybe should have looked at other directors if they wanted to make money.
Ignoring the obvious choices, I think Gore V(yes the lone ranger guy) and Abrams would have been alot more justified in green lighting this budget and this type of material.

WB will win, they barely put up any capital for this film. Legendary footed most of the bill I believe.

I just think nothing of the (terrible) marketing hits home for the GA. It's like "oh that looks neat" but that's about it. It's not something that seems like must-watch material. No stars. No character moments. No big name director.

Exactly. I'm sure the movie is good, but the marketing was seriously lacking. Look, I'm a big fan of giant monster movies, hell I own a few Toho kaiju films and almost all 28 Godzilla Japanese films. I dig the genre. That being said, I haven't been pulled in. I'm not dying to see this film. I'll probably see it sooner or later but with this "so/so" marketing, it really doesn't ramp up any interest. The promo and trailers were not horrible, but there was nothing really unified and unique about them either.
My brother for example will see just about any movie in theaters, he loves going to the movies during the summer. That being said we saw a trailer of PR attached to a showing of Man of Steel and afterwards he told me "that looks stupid, and not fun stupid either."
This just isn't registering with audience's. I wish the marketing had been stronger because a film like this needs it. It's not like the GA is thinking "oh giant robots like Transformers ? A must see !!". It looks completely different, has a different visual design and color tone, you need strong and efficient marketing to push a film like this.
All that being said I hope the film's saving grace is it's international numbers. I love Toro and want more from him.

I think some on here have the impression that I don't enjoy fanboy *********ory fantasy films but I often do. If I had to guess I'd say I have a 95% chance of liking or loving Pacific Rim based on my affection for the director's previous works.

I don't plan on *********ing during Pacific Rim. I mean come on, this isn't a Chris Nolan film or something. ;)

I'm not sure how well monster movies do in the West. I think Godzilla had a good run at some point, King Kong too. Then there was that Cloverfield thing, however that film was almost all marketing(jj style).

Because... it is.

There is literally nothing new about this movie. Nothing. It's every cool scene from popular sci-fi cartoons mashed together with every fall back character/dialogue cliche from popular anime. It is clearly del Toro's passion project, and good for him that he got to make it. It's freaking beautiful to watch. Best visual effects I've seen this year so far. But man, is it dumb and unoriginal.

In a world where despite being disappointing for longtimes fans, such a twist was actually a pretty good bit of writing driving home the filmmaker's intended subtext. :o
