Just came out another tracking firm MTC has Pacific Rim opening at $26M. Do they have an agenda too?

At the end of last week, Finke the Hutt (in a post talking up how Legendary was headed to Universal) said it was tracking at "no better than mid 30s." Did she also have an agenda?

You misunderstood what I was complaining about. It's not about the tracking numbers. I'm surprised by the RT score and I'll be surprised if we see over 40m.

What I was saying basically is this, "didn't they just post that a couple days ago and last week?" Answer is yes, that's all. I don't see a reason to, but it's by the same guy so maybe he can't think of anything else to submit. Beats me.

You accused them of having a hidden agenda. Because you don't like the info they provided. Now two alternate sources are saying the same thing. Again I ask. Do they have a hidden agenda too?

I refuse to even post on boxoffice.com about this film because they're in the denial phase ... refusing to accept the possibility that general audiences just don't care about GDT and his large robots and monsters.

This film just does nothing for me ...

Posting the same information 3 times is weird, yeah. Is Variety gonna report the tracking every week for all movies? Doubt it.

You don't like the info. So you're complaining and making accusations instead of accepting the fact that "Hey.. maybe not everyone cares about this movie that I'm pumped about." Simple as that. We get it.

I saw many do this during Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. I know. But as long as you like the movie personally, what does it matter?

When did I ever say I didn't like or believe the info, come on man. I've never touted that PacRim is gonna kick ass in the box office ever.

You said it by your making accusations. If the info was exact opposite and tracking was incredible, you would touting it right now. Again I've seen this before. Many times. I know.

JermeyJahns gave this film a good review and I tend to agree with his reviews so I think I will go and check this out not this weekend but sometime next week

Just saw it in Lie-MAX 3D. Initial thoughts:

PROS - Amazing score (best of the summer). Visual effects were truly fantastic about 80% of the time.

CONS - Terrible, terrible dialogue. Cringe-worthy the majority of the time. The story starts out simple and streamlined (yay) then spirals into stupidity by the time the third act starts. Second act is really boring (hardly any action at all). Characters are one note. All of them.

OVERALL - It's far from del Toro's best movie. Maybe right in the middle. Anime fans will eat it up. Non-anime fans will more than likely pass. If you're excited to see it, see it on the screen (preferably IMAX) because the scale of the visuals will be lost on a TV. But don't see it in 3D. Headache inducing.

The fact that a $200m movie is about to die at the box office is a big story. Add in the fact that Legendary just announced a jump to Universal and that's how you get multiple stories.

The marketing is garbage and it's been garbage from the start. I like Robots and Monsters enough and I'm a fan of Del Toro so I'm seeing it but I can see why the film would look completely unappealing to a lot of people.

I'm a GDT fangirl and even I think that his fanbase has been embarrassing themselves for the last month. The fanbase, including site runners like Devin Faraci, have accused everyone who reports tracking numbers and talks about what the movie might do at the box office, in a non positive light, of geek treason, accuse them of having an agenda against the film. Jamie is right, this happens everytime.

It's a kill the messager deal. There were plenty of people who commented on the bad marketing and the fact that the movie looked like a fanboy fest and the fans didn't want to hear it and now they are faced with actual tracking numbers 1 day before the film comes out and they are in complete denial about it.

Well the movie was screened two weeks ago in LA for the big news and blog sites. I've only seen about half of them post reviews so far. Just like every time a very popular genre director comes out with an iffy movie, they'd rather not publish reviews instead of posting negative ones. Del Toro is a genuinely nice guy (he did all the Pacific Rim interviews in his living room) and he "gets" the geeky audience so they feel obligated to defend him at all costs.

I'm an anime fan and I think I'll probably like this movie, but the report about terrible dialogues and one-note characters do concern me.

Whoever listens to /filmcast here, you'll know that Dave Chen likes to talk about the negatives a lot more, to the point where even if he liked the movie it doesn't come across that way. But this is what he said about Pacific Rim...

PACIFIC RIM: This movie is so much like the perfect summer movie of my childhood dreams that it is scary. I love it so much. So, so much.

I didn't grow up with anime. Only started watching select ones for reference these past few years. PR is literally a live-action anime, but one with an English dub that replaces the good story and meaty dialogue with PG rated silliness. And all the stereotypical anime characters are here:

- Timid Asian girl with a warrior spirit but has to be continuously rescued by the bad boy she's secretly in love with

- Zany geek scientists (including a ridiculously British one) that the tough guys make fun of

- Crazy American mob guy who is scarred up and cartoonishly silly (lines like "you've gotta be funnin' kidding me")

So, since I didn't grow up watching that stuff it doesn't automatically appeal to me know. It has a lot of good (score, visuals) and a lot of bad. Guess it all depends on if you have an affinity to that kind of storytelling.

And if Rim does tank it will be the 3rd big budget movie in a row which makes it an even bigger story.

Sorry that you didn't like the film more Poni_Boy, I certainly hope I have a better reaction than you did. I always root on movies to be good.

You're a CHEN-HEAD too?

Do you know why I love Dave Chen? Because he's so negative even he thinks he needs mental help. At least he knows about it.

I have no idea what that is. I just enjoy listening to the /filmcast.

I root for them too , especially the ones with good creative power behind the lens. To me it was clear what this movie was from the moment it was announced - a one-off. And it does deliver on its promise of awesome robot vs monster action. That will be more than enough for plenty of people. What really bugs me is all the talk from people talking about "world building" and how "new" and "fresh" and "gaming changing" it is. Those comments are obviously exaggerated and they cause the honestly positive reviews to be left in the dust.

The thing about GDT is that, again, I prefer his Spanish films more than his American stuff. I think his visuals are amazing and unique, and he handles action well..but when it comes to characterization, it comes off as too broad and he never hits the right notes.

Amen.

What did you think of Hunnam? Still keep seeing people bash his performance. Baffles me because I think he's great on Sons of Anarchy (only thing I've seen him in). Maybe it's just because he has more to work with on there.

I also wonder if the end credits listed Zack Snyder as the director instead of Del Toro what would the tomato meter look like.
