Pacific Rim - Part 5

Funny how some give PR a free pass just because... robots vs monsters!! But then bash other more successful movies for being "too serious" or whatever BS. :whatever:

Anyway, opinions are opinions, but the box office is merciless, most people don't care about generic robots & monsters, plus mediocre acting and dialogue doesn't help either. Transformers gets away with it because of its popularity, and if Godzilla is decent enough, it will be big because it's freaking Godzilla.

So what did ya'll think of the fights in IM3?

I only ask cause absolutely no one seems to bring it up at this junctures. It's always man of steel this and that(a film with a very diff dynamic mind you) had no real use of armor or robots persay.

Is it because we've all forgotten about IM3 or is it just that good? I don't get it.
When Wolverine comes out next week those threads will be full of MOS talk as well....

I love the one on one with Kilian. I really like how Kilian moves, but as a whole the action is kinda of underwhelming. It looks nice, but it is missing the awe or structure to match stuff like MoS or PR.

It also didn't help that they turned Tony's suits into papier-mache.

Just got back from finally seeing this. 75% full. Fun, fun, fun. They really dropped the marketing ball on this one. 8 out of 10

My son loved the killain(SP) vs Tony but I was so frustrated I didn't actually get to see iron man cut lose in an Iron man movie I just found it annoying. I really got tired of his tissue paper suits that kept getting destroyed whereas my son felt it was a great against overwhelming odds battle.

The huge battle of empty Suits vs nameless superminions was impressive but since it was between nobodies neither of us really cared.

Both of us felt the final battle should have ended with the exploding armor trick.

People compare latest movie to MOS because it's the best this year and it set the bar. If it's not equal to or better than MOS it's failure in the eyes of fanboy... Plus bragging rights for fanboy...

So, anyone know what kind of weekend PR is in for at the BO? I am hoping for as low a drop as possible.

i thought the acting and dialoge was good enough for a blockbuster. :woot:

PR is the only blockbuster that hasn't disappointed me.

ST:ID
Too much action, movie doesn't linger long enough on the emtional beats.

IM 3
Less said about the 'twist' the better

MoS
Emotional beats were strong but the destruction was way over the top and lasted way too long and the characterisation of Superman was no where NEAR how I expect Superman to act and behave.

i think i gave MOS and ST2 7/10. they were for going for something more and didnt get there. but they tryed. i think PR tryed for something more simple and got there 100%.

i am ashamed to say that there was to much punching in MOS. embarrassed as a fanboy. but it is what it is. to much repeaing shots. punch punch and punch. if they would have SUperman and both Zod use at least 2 more headbutts it would be different. way to much focus on arms and not enough on legs. or some elbow action. but ok i know that MPAA hates elbow punches in pg13 movies. elbow is to violent for them.

I agree with this.

As for the repeative fighting look at Spider-Man 2 as an example. First fight is in a bank and then moves to the side of a building. Second fight starts at a clock tower moves to a train and then Spidey has to stop the train. Third fight is in an secret hideout. Clear levels of escalation and stakes. Where as all the fights in MoS seemed at the same and the level of escalation. I was just desensitised to the whole experience.

I found the movie to be okay. I was expecting better to be honest. The monsters all looked very similar and it would've been cool to see more variety. The characters were just straight up TERRIBLE caricatures. They also added some pointless scenes; like who really cared when the
Australian guy died and that whole emotional mumbo jumbo with his dad?....I barely got to know him so why should I care?
. Also I wish the monsters where scarier and not just roaring brutes.

On the bright side, it is still a fun movie if you're looking forward to an action film but I think I will forget it very soon. Btw, my theater had 75% Asians. I seriously don't think I've ever seen a theater with so many Asian people. I think that this film will do well with those who are familiar/appreciate Asian culture. It doesn't seem to be hot stuff to other people though...which kind of sucks because although its not the best movie of the summer, I'd still be down to watch a sequel (And I wish Del Toro could have financial backing to create more of his passion projects)

I can see why you would say that but I disagree. The concept was simple enough, and on paper it seems like it would have been easy to pull off. It's basically like Godzilla and Ultraman fighting, only with good special effects.

Yet to me, it just felt like it was missing something. I think part of it had to do with nearly all of the battles occurring at night time, in the rain or under the sea. Sequences that should have "wowed" me kind of fell flat because it was occasionally difficult to make out what I was looking at. The monsters especially... I don't think I could draw a crude illustration of any of them from memory as they all just looked like blobs of spikes with glowing tongues.

I also felt like the movie had trouble deciding if it wanted to be silly and fun or dead serious. Towards the end of the film, it almost felt like I was watching two different movies... one serious apocalyptic action/drama with Hunnam and Elba, and one zany goofball sci-fi comedy with Day and Gorman. Perhaps some people liked that back-and-forth shift in tone, but I personally feel like humor and lightheartedness should feel organic in movies... here it was jarring.

I thought this was a fun and satisfying enough film. I want one of those black pilot suits!

That being said I thought it was one of the better summer blockbuster movies to come out this year and Big 'Dris is a friggin' Boss.

I see people online already referring to it as Pacific ******. :o

Yes, I know the first thought is of asian porn, which we all can agree is always warranted, but they were using it as an insult..somehow.

I agree.
As I've mentioned before, I think the movie went a little too far in undercutting Tony every step of the way. For most of the movie its fine as its very much the point but then in the last moments of the battle they went for it again and had that last suit collapse on the way to him. I get what they were going for. That frustration and playing against expectations was very much the point, but it wasn't exactly satisfying.

The combination of your message with that image is quite interesting. I think Heath Ledger completely broke standard expectations for acceptable acting in summer films. Its no longer enough for the acting to merely be solid. Say what you want about Hunnam but its not as if Mark Hammill was nominated for any Oscars in '78.
