Pacific Rim - Part 6

I loved this movie but I honestly don't care to see a prequel. My excitement for the film had nothing to with the potential for yet another sequel machine. There were a lot of talented people involved in this film (from what I've seen of his own work Beechem especially is very talented and has a lot of potenial) and I'd much rather see them all go off and create more, different things.

I've been thinking in the end was there that much difference between PR and Avatar as films? yet one made 2.7 billion and the other will make a fraction of that.

Not that I expected PR to be a juggernaut at all but it's funny what movies blow up and what others don't? To me both movies were visual feasts with arguably quite a few cheesy moments and their share of clunky acting.

I'd put Sam worthington and Charlie Hunam on the same just passable level here as leading men. I'd give the edge to Saldana over Kikuchi but it's hard to compare their roles 1:1.

Obviously one had the James Cameron name attached but still it makes you think. Someone in the thread brought up darker/lighter lit environments and in that you could say avatar was almost the opposite of PR with it's many bright scenes.

Avatar was definitely better written than Pacific Rim, but I'd rather watch the latter any day of the week.

Just got back from seeing this in IMAX 3D (my first IMAX experience) anddd... Yeah, it was even more awesome. The script was so-so and Hunnam was just passable as a leading man, but I had such a fun time and both the 3D and IMAX were so immersive it made me fall in love with it. If you see this movie again, make sure to see it in that format

:yay: Glad, but I doubt a sequel will happen. There was that article about studios not seeing box office returns from China recently, plus will the GA really want another one? It doesn't necessarily NEED it, but there are plenty of ways it could be continued. But, ultimately, it's Universal's call

Yeah....There's a difference about saving face, and scratching your way to the black; vs. making a true profit.

The closer it gets to $400M WW the more respectable it looks. That is all it really is at this point.

I'm grateful for this much. This could have been the biggest bomb of the summer, but thankfully (well, not really) that title was passed on to Lone Ranger instead.

Thank you Lone Ranger for taking the burden. You too, After Earth.

I hope all the people reporting from that Deadline article aren't overlooking the fact that Legendary doesn't get squat from international distribution. As much as that keeps being repeated it seems to be the first thing people ignore.

Hit ****ing 101.

If you guys think Finke the Hutt (who "wrote" the article but then at the bottom listed as being "on vacation") doesn't resort to that, you're nuts.

If this was true though why are more and more movies catering to the Chinese audience? Iron Man 3 changed parts of the movie for its release in that country, PR made sure it included a Chinese Jaeger in a pretty big supporting role. Also the likes of DOFP and Transformers 4 and many more are including chinese actors and actors from other parts of asia in their movies as well. If they didnt earn anything from the BO returns, why are they trying to cater to them?

I'm just speculating, but maybe if PR does amazing in China and WW overall Legendary will see the potential in a sequel making money and do one with Universal. Stranger things have happened.

Universal does have this weird tendency to pick up properties that "disappointed" from other studios and take a gamble on a sequel. It backfired on them with Serenity, so it will be interesting to see how it works out for them with Kick-Ass 2.

Still, those were much lower budget properties than PR. I just don't see a sequel happening for this.

I don't know who's worse, her or the people in the Deadline comments section. The venom they spew in that place... Good God.

I don't like Nikki, but she usually has more sense than this. Hit ****ing is a specialty of hers... but her 'word' isn't going to get Pacific Rim 2 greenlit (which is laughable at best). Add in the fact that China hasn't paid the U.S. studios their share of the profits since January...

I enjoyed Pacific Rim, but unless it does insane home video sales, it ain't getting a sequel. No matter how much spin Finke does with this.

It's just.. sad to me. the post release responses to Pacific Rim, Dredd, Scott Pilgrim, etc, etc are proof that genre fans will never be satisfied. You have del Toro making a $200 mil movie SPECIFICALLY for the fanboy/girl demographic and it's still not good enough. It NEEDS a sequel. The fact this movie got made in this day and age is close to miraculous, and its biggest supporters are foaming at the mouth to convince everyone else why a sequel NEEDS to happen. I really don't understand it.

If it has Hunger Games style DVD sales I could see a sequel being considered.

EDIT: The movie had no cliff hangers, it ended so I don't get the sequel thing either. I get rooting on it's success because you enjoyed the film and like the story but there really is nothing left unsaid.
