Pacific Rim - Part 6

Even if it was able to push $400M WW I still think a sequel is a no go because that would be a 25/75 domestic/foreign split. That does not look pretty unless its $1 billion in total like Pirates 4.

There's no sequel. That's just not going to happen. WB doesn't want it, general audiences don't want it and Legendary is far more interested in making Godzilla a success now to focus on PR in its rearview mirror. The movie wasn't even written to lend itself to a sequel, and that was on purpose. The fact this one was even made was borderline miraculous. If people want the story to continue it's time to petition Legendary to guarantee a comic series.

It's not WB's choice for a sequel though. Legendary has the rights to Pacific Rim, so it will depend on if Legendary and Universal will want to do it.

Even if it doesn't get a movie sequel, it could continue in the form of a graphic novel series (since Legendary has their own Graphic Novel label).

That's so odd that Uni would have first look deal on a PR sequel regardless if Legendary owns the rights or not because WB has a vested interest in the property. Unless their deal is completely different, WB would still have to pass on the option to produce the sequel before Legendary nixed them out of it.

Awesome movie. Yeah, it may have been overkill to continue on after the Hong Kong showdown, but I would rather get a tummy ache from an extra scoop of ice cream than only be given just an empty cone in the first place, like other summer blockbusters tend to do.

An idea for a more intimate sequel spinoff: Those collected Cloverfield-esque lice escape, breed, and we have a whole new infestation on our hands.

Considering Universal really doesn't have many big, money-making film franchises except for "Fast and Furious" and "Despicable Me", I would think they would want a sequel to Pacific Rim and make another big franchise out of that.

That's assuming a sequel will be bigger than this first movie. So far its box office run doesn't indicate that unless its budget gets reduced.

Well they could do it were Gypsy 2.0 is the only Jaeger, surely that would reduce the budget somewhat.

They've also been.having quite a bit of flops lately it seems like. They can't afford to have something like Pacific Rim 2 which would obviously not make as much

I think the more pressing issue for PR's BO is not so much a sequel but whether or not GDT can save face as someone who should still be given big budgets down the line?

I think as long as the film is able to break even execs will be willing to give him some other shots in the future.

Hollywood in general should start making more mid budget films.

I think they will. But now, in today's climate, what is 'mid range' now? 40-80 million?

GDT being given more scaled down budgets in the future wouldn't be the worst thing IMO. He's a talented guy, we all know this. Let him show us he can make a lot out of a little.

I imagine we'll be seeing a bit of that coming up, with him bringing The Strain to FX.

Indeed. As it is now though it seems like studio films either have surprisinlgy low budgets (30 million or less) or otherwise the budgets spiral sky high and a movie can pull half a billion worldwide and be a failure. The market can probably only really support only so many billioin dollar movies and its gotten to the point where multiple films from the same studio are fighting for those blockbuster dollars and tie in opportunities.

See 1993-2008.

And he should get back to that.

Actually, PR was the only deviation from that, so.... I don't know what the **** I'm saying. It's late. Disregard. :o

He should go back to struggling to find distribution and having his films hacked apart by studios?

The projects that he develops probably don't have the appeal to be swinging 200 million dollar budgets but something like Crimson Peak will be a test of if he can make the studio system work for him at a more manageable scale.

I SAID DISREGARD! :argh:
