Pacific Rim - Part 6

Here's what I've been wanting to see: Interview and Concept Art from Guy Davis.

They have a bunch more of his art on the Legendary facebook page.

Guy Davis is one of my favorite comic book artist and his fingerprints were all over this movie, which I loved. Great to see some more of his concept art!

This one freaks me out!

I wish something like this would have made it in the movie. I love the Karloff design and this setting would have been a nice change.

^That is superb stuff, maybe they were saving that for a possible sequel? The setting seemed to be Hong Kong most of the time in PR.

Amazing pic, but what is that one random soldier gonna do? Shoot at it with his gun?

that karloff kaiju is in the prequel comic. the movie showed quick glimpses of it during the intro/news broadcasts.
the design is pretty unique from all the other kaiju, it probably most creepy and unsettling look to me.

Seriously though Karloff is my favorite design to come out of the film and I wish we had seen more of him.

^Dont remember seeing him in the movie, what scene was he is? I am assuming it was a brief scene?

It appears to be part of the montage/prologue at the beginning.

Thats what the picture of him standing in the smog above the fires is from, the opening montage. There's apparently another close up shot of his face.

while all the kaiju move like animals, the way that karloff moved in those quick scenes was like a human, but creepy. Its like the uncanny valley effect.

That's what I like about it so much.

Also though they've mentioned that the whole chest orifice thing was just a bridge too far.

I think this has been my favorite concept from the ones I've seen, I definitely wish we saw more of this guy.

that's what i enjoy about del toro's movies.
you look at his creatures, and you can tell there's love put into designing all of them.
there's no half-baked designs here. lot of thought put in making these.

that's including the jaegar mechs as well.

i think they designed every kaiju for the scene that they would be in.so the scary horror kaiju were deisnged to move slow and in dust and fog. they were created for atmospheric scenes. they wouldnt work in an action scene.

i think its brilliant and the only way to make a movie. but i hear the movie is cliche,to explained and to simple. i guess Lindelof didnt writte the movie?

it's a cliche to complain about every movie being cliche these days.

yea, it uses some common tropes from this kind of genre (kaiju movies and mecha anime), but as long as its fun and entertaining. pacific rim has it in spades. :hrt:

Not seen this movie yet but im just wondering if its still considered a bomb at this point? Doubling its production budget should make it some form of success shouldn't it?

I don't think it's a bomb despite what some say but it wasn't a clear success either.

The clichés everybody criticised were the speech cliché and other ones related to action movies. I hope they make a sequel though, and if they do i'm sure it will aim more to the chinese market and will probably have a smaller budget.

I only complain about cliches if they're done badly. In this movie they're done horribly

Couldnt agree more, PR wore its influences on its sleeve and was all the better for it, I loved the movie and it was possibly the most enjoyable blockbuster this summer for me.
