Pacific Rim - Part 6

There he is.
Karloff.JPG

for anyone curious, the karloff kaiju was the one that attacked manila.

it's a cliche to complain about every movie being cliche these days.

yea, it uses some common tropes from this kind of genre (kaiju movies and mecha anime), but as long as its fun and entertaining. pacific rim has it in spades. :hrt:

Couldnt agree more, PR wore its influences on its sleeve and was all the better for it, I loved the movie and it was possibly the most enjoyable blockbuster this summer for me.
Heh, people don't seem to use that excuse with Michael Bay's movies, and in Pacific Rim they were even more visible.

A lot of the Bayisms like in the TF movies don't appeal to me at all. The ones in PR are more cheesy but it works far better for me.

Agreed with Liam.

Though i do enjoy Bay's TF movies, what bring them down for me is the stupid human interactions. It's not really the cliches that's the problem, it's Bay's penchant for low-brow humor. When they aren't really funny.
Bay's sense of action is great though. (Remember The Rock? one of the best action movies ever)

Del Toro's movies may be cheesy but there's a "cuteness" to it all. haha.

Well you are speaking to someone who likes Bay's movies. The Rock is still a classic, Bad Boys is still a good action flick and I enjoyed all 3 TF movies and look forward to a 4th.

The simple fact is though, he is not as talented a director as Del Toro and GDT used the cliches to his benefit in PR IMO. Plus, GDT sense of humour is much better too.

Agreed, I like SOME of the Bayisms in the TF movies, I still consider the 1st TF movie a great blockbuster, but PR just took its cliches and did them better, and as above, GDT is simply a better director than Bay.

Saw it yesterday at the second run theater. A few minutes were cut out accidentally (when Mako and Raleigh were sparring) and people were miffed, but hey, we only paid $3. :funny:

I enjoyed it. It was kind of a dumb blockbuster, but not offensively dumb like the TF movies. Seeing Burn Gorman ham it up after his serious stint in TDKR was probably the most enjoyable thing. (My friend knew him from Torchwood but I'm not familiar with that.)

Yeah, i'm on the same boat, i loved The Rock and can watch and enjoy his other movies, even the ones that are really bad. I find Armageddon and Bad Boys II a little underrated, but i guess that's just me.

Well, he does have a lot of talents, which is why so many new directors are inspired by him (for better or for worse), and he has an eye for action. With Guillermo Del Toro, while i think he's talented and creative, and have yet to watch Pan's Labyrinth i wasn't very impressed by Hellboy at all, i really enjoyed his sequel though, but there too i think his use of clichés are his weak spot. I don't see how his use of the final speech worked for the film.

As for his jokes, the difference between his jokes and Bay's is that jokes in Michael Bay movies are more insulting, while this gives the edge to Del Toro i find both sence of humors a little juvenile.

Yeah, GDT makes better movies but when it comes to action i give it to Michael Bay, while he dropped the ball in Transformers 2 the rest of his movies have amazing action scenes.

Though i don't think GDT used Cliches any better, they were just in a better movie. Cliches like the rival, the protagonist proving himself/ herself, every other secondary robot character, and the final speech were in my opinion the weakest parts of the movie.

changing subject i really hope they do a sequel, it will obviously need to have a smaller budget but i also want to see how they will market it this time, considering the giant market that just opened up in China.

^I'd say Armageddon is a little under-rated, but BBII is what it is, a dumb action movie made to entertain, I have liked both BB movies though, and again I do like Bay as a director.

But again, GDT is a better film-maker, I have loved all of his movies I have watched and that is the case with very few directors for me, Cameron and Nolan are the only other 2 I can think of. I wouldnt say Bay does better action necessarily either, the Hellboy movies and Blade II had great action and yet all were made for well under $100 million, when he got a Bay-like budget with PR, he showed how good he truly is with action. That Hong Kong sequence was simply stunning and a contender not only for action scene of this year, but of the last few years.

I too hope we see PR2, the movie is at $405 million WW now, a number I bet they never figured they would get too after the movies poor opening weekend.

What's crazy about all of this, is that the opening isn't even from ILM!

Absolutely spectacular FX video showing before and after shots. The FX should win an Oscar, they were outstanding.

He was serious in TDKR? I thought he was hamming it up in that film too, in a different way. He was like very self consciously "serious", talking with a whispery, often gravelly bent, in a very over the top and unnecessary manner. I wouldn't be shocked if he said he was satirizing the seriousness of it all.

haha yea gorman was playing an obvious bad guy in dark knight rises.
i wouldn't say hamming it up, but its like the typical action movie slimey bad guy henchmen acting.

I mean he was fairly restrained in TDKR. I've seen much hammier villain roles in my time. In Pacific Rim, it was like he'd had a few cans of Red Bull before they called action. :funny:

"Forgive him, he's a kaiju gr-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-oupie"

My God, this is what it's all about! This is by far the most entertaining movie of the summer, it delivers on what it promises, and then some! Amazing direction, spectacular fights (thank Lucas I could see them), Oscar-worthy CGI, perfectly placed characters, impeccably appropriate acting for this concept and world, badass music, cleverly placed and subtle sociopolitical allegories, smart and well-timed humour, lush cinematography, great, economic writing that makes you care about all the characters, I officially love Charlie Hunnam and Beckett's one of the best heroes I've seen the last few years, noble, stoic, capable, troubled but able to rise above it, I mean, Jesus!

Seriously, if by watching porn you're supposed to get off, then this movie IS destruction porn! Del Toro, unlike Whedon, knows how to properly cater to fans without falling into the fan service traps, his world building is second to none, he made me hate the Kaiju from shot 1, he absorbed me into the story from minute 1, he made me care and I'm 100% behind anything he does from now on. This movie didn't deserve to flop and thank Lucas for China and Japan. I don't NEED a sequel, but PR's world is so great, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing more of it!

I wouldn't call it destruction porn. They actually bother to place the action scenes in the context of a functioning story and motivation ("cliche" or not, it's coherent).

I was being tongue in cheek. I didn't mean it the way this phrase is traditionally used.

And all the cliches were brilliantly handled.
