Pacific Rim - Part 6

I think people are starting to have a problem with humor, when it destroys any tension or drama build up. Humor itself isn't bad, but when it starts to take over, or gets used at the wrong time continuously, because the people in charge think the audience will get bored if a dramatic scene isn't immediately followed by some joke, it starts to get annoying. It's why I have an issue with Iron Man 3. No one wants "glum grim dark gloomy", at least not the people that I have seen. They just don't want the humor to be excessive.

That said, I had no issues with Pacific Rim myself. I accepted it as the cheese fest that it is.

 Spot on, I thought Thor 2 did this as well. I am all for humour in movies, just dont follow an emotional or dramatic with some 30 seconds later, it ruins said scenes, like it did in IM3 and TDW.

I honestly never had that problem with PR, there was plenty of humour, but never did it under-cut a dramatic or emotional scene, those moments were allowed to breathe, which made them sink in and have more effect. I personally loved PR and look forward to seeing it again on BD.

Newt and Gottlieb's humor worked a lot better the second time I saw it. I actually really like the humor in the movie.

But Thor 2? Now that's problematic.

^Agreed.

Finally saw the movie in BD, and I agree with an earlier post which said the final battle is much clearer on BD. You can make out a lot of things you couldnt at the cinema now and it is actually a decent action set-piece, but Hong Kong is still the best sequence, amazing stuff.

REALLY hope we get a sequel to this and GDT is involved, though after he does Hellboy 3 :cwink:.

I really don't think the humor, as it was in Pacific Rim, was particularly counter to the heightened tone of the film overall.

This was the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time. Just plain fun. Made me feel like a kid again :-)

Not at all, and the humour didnt undercut the dramatic and emotional scenes which have been the complaints of the last 2 Marvel movies, hence people thinking crowds want no humour in their movies. Thats not the case, just dont have humorous moments 30 secs after a very serious one.

The movie gives the same feeling, one of the best movies this year for me.

I don't think clarity had a lot to do with it. What was more important was the smaller screen. I feel any confusing scene is always a bit more clear on smaller screens. Bourne Ultimatum was practically saved by home media.

Is it possible because digital versions might have more frames than a theatrical cut?

Probably has more to do with the fact that theaters pretty much don't employ actual projectionists any more.

Yeah, I have found a lot of scenes from different movies always look clearer on BD on a TV rather than in the cinema, you'd think it would be the other way around.

It should be the other way around but theater chains would rather shoot themselves in the foot by presenting an inferior product and then complain about revenue losses.

^Thats crazy, surely they want to give people the best experience? Oh well.

But yeah this movie is great on BD, the finale is a good action scene now even though its still not as good as the HK sequence. The visuals in this are amazing as well, I know all GDT movies have amazing visuals, but wow, PR may just take the cake.

Anyone know how the DVD/BD sales are going for this?

It aparently did pretty well on bluray when it was first released though it sold less than The Heat.

^Any numbers at all? I am just curious as good DVD/BD sales could mean more chance of a sequel happening. I dont think it will happen, but I still have a little hope left.

I think I might be obsessed with this movie. I have watched it three times this week alone and I am absolutely in love with it's visual style, the musical score, it's characters and just how generally over the top it is. This thing was such an anime brought to life it was awesome. I felt like a kid again and I love movies that pull that off. I love it when movies actually live up to my high expectations once I am hyped for it already. That does not happen often for me. I'm normally setting myself up for disappointment and try to set the bar low but not here.

I really crave more of this world, whether it comes in the form of a sequel or cartoons or comic books.

The score for the movie is the type that gets better as you listen to it more, if any of you know what I'm talking about.

I think Ramin Djawadi used a bit too much electrical guitar though in his compositions.

I'm a fan of that, actually. I feel like it's still something not used very much in film scores. It's nice to get a break from the big, opera-type, foreign language chanting deals that are so common. Sometimes I just want to hear some sweet riffs. His score for Iron Man is my favorite of the three and I remember liking how unconventional it was when I first heard it. Most movies sound like Jesus Christ is going to return at any moment.

I agree, I havent watched it as much as you, as I bought The Wolverine and MOS at the same time so been watching them as well, but its always in the back of my mind the last few weeks and this movie gets better with each viewing. It actually surpassed me expectations at points, specifically the Hong Kong sequence.

And yeah, the score is great, very effective in every scene, I particularly love it in Mako's flashback scene.

Yes, I loved the distinctive themes for the Jaegers and Kaijus. The Kaijus especially seemed inspired by themes like the Godzilla one. This is the kind of movie that 15 years ago would have received an animated series e.g. The Real Ghostbusters, Men In Black, Godzilla: The Animated Series, and Evolution. I really like that it comes off as the payoff of a series that nobody got to see. Each character in this movie could easily have an episode about them.

Yeah I noticed a lot of Godzilla type themes for the Kaiju, it was awesome stuff, then the more rock'n'roll type of themes for the Jaegers, it was great and set the mood up perfectly in each scene.

I think more kids need to discover this movie, me and my brother showed it to my Nephews who are 3 and 5 and they LOVED it. They starting building robots out of cardboard boxes immediatly after watching it :woot:.

I dont understand why people are so forgiving of the crappiness of this movie, but other much better movies get ripped limb from limb around here. lol. Is it because it set out to be cheesy and cliche? Or is everyone just a giant fan of robot vs monster japanese-ish type stuff?

It's because not everyone has the same opinion as you on what qualifies as a good versus crappy movie. :wow:

I highly recommend getting this book.

http://www.amazon.com/Pacific-Rim-Man-Machines-Monsters/dp/1608871827

Its a full making-of book with a lot of focus on the design work but also a lot of in-universe background information that was used to inform a lot of the designs and given to the actors.

I particularly enjoyed reading about the birthdates of the characters (one of my favorite elements of near-future science fiction).
