Other movies may get ripped for having similar problems but they also fail to meet the film in its qualities. I really enjoy this movie. If anyone is going to complain about the dialogue in much of the film I will be right there with them but the dialogue problem, or the Australian accents, what have you don't do much to take from the elements of the film I do enjoy (the designs, much of the world building, many of the characters, the fights, the score the overall tone.)

Yeah I noticed a lot of Godzilla type themes for the Kaiju, it was awesome stuff, then the more rock'n'roll type of themes for the Jaegers, it was great and set the mood up perfectly in each scene.

I think more kids need to discover this movie, me and my brother showed it to my Nephews who are 3 and 5 and they LOVED it. They starting building robots out of cardboard boxes immediatly after watching it :woot:.

Guillermo del Toro has spoken about how this is very much a movie he wanted kids to see and it was strange to me how little was done to market the film to younger viewers. There are toys but for action figures they are pretty damn expensive. Really, coming just after Man of Steel and its super gigantic marketing push which bled right into the film itself, there were no kinds of Tie ins for Pacific Rim. It could have easily have had things like McDonalds toys.

I've actually been thinking about getting the movie on DVD for one of my younger cousins who missed it in theaters.
 
Pacific Rim is crappy? Oh, thank god for letting me know. I had no idea. I'm going to go throw my Blu-ray in the trash right now.

Seriously. This is essentially what Power Rangers: The Movie wishes it was and yet the marketing didn't aim this at the younger crowd at all. It's not like it's themes are that much more mature than anything sent to theaters by Marvel. I honestly cannot wait to watch this with my little brother. He'll probably enjoy it more than Thor and The Incredible Hulk anyway.

I feel to be into this movie you can't really take movies that seriously to begin with. This is escapism at it's purest and it does a great job of it. Monsters vs robots. That's what this movie is. That's it. If someone watched it for more than that then they're just setting themselves up for disappointment (I feel the same way about the Transformers movies. Robots fought and destroyed things. I'm happy. Expectations fulfilled.).
 
I wonder if there are going to be any fanboy wars over who would win, gipsy-danger or godzilla?

:up: Agreed, the movie had some sub-par elements like every movie but I didnt find anything 'crappy' in it at all. On re-watch I find myself loving the movie as a whole more and more, even the bits I previously didnt like.

The cheesiness just seems to suit the tone of the movie for me as well, this is a movie were characters have names like Stacker Pentecost, Hercules Hanson, etc, the cheesy elements were meant to be there and I loved them personally.
 
I loved the cheesiness of this film. The cheese made up the film's charm. It wasn't cynical, mean spirited or downright racist like the Transformers films.
 
The film basically is a love letter to Japanese pop culture.(anime/kaiju films/mechs). Yes the character development and dialogue wasn't all it could have been but the world building, score, lighting, cinematography, etc. was top notch. You can see a lot of thought and especially passion went into. While I like Pacific Rim more, I liken it to Tron: Legacy back in 2010.The visuals were top notch, buta lot of people complained about the characters and story. Maybe my tastes are simpler, but I enjoy both films and proudly own them on Blu Ray.
 
have they said if they are going to do a sequel?
 
Only there is some interest in it by some of the people involved. No one is saying anything official sounding or definite though.
 
'Pacific Rim' Marketing Exec Exits Legendary for Paramount (Exclusive)
The move is part of a marketing shakeup that sees executive VP Joel Chiodo leaving to join Paramount and fellow marketing executive VP Christopher Erb let go.

Legendary has been shaking up its marketing ranks over the past few weeks. The company recently hired Emily Castel as its chief marketing officer (earlier in the year, Legendary bought the company she founded, Five33).

Erb, who had been an executive VP brand marketing, left EA Sports to oversee Legendary's social media and consumer marketing campaigns for such upcoming films as Godzilla (which Warner Bros. will release May 16) and Seventh Son (which Universal will release Feb. 6, 2015).

Both Chiodo and Erb reported to Legendary president and chief creative officer Jon Jashni.

Legendary, the finance and production company behind The Dark Knight films and The Hangover trilogy, made a number of significant moves in 2013, leaving its longtime partner Warner Bros. to team up with Universal Pictures, where it will co-finance a chunk of the studio's slate.

Released July 12, the $200 million Pacific Rim was initially dismissed as a high-priced bomb. But the film made a huge showing internationally, particularly in China, and wound up with a $408 million worldwide haul.

Legendary declined to comment.

Exactly. And the "cheesiness" knew how to wrangle itself in. It was camp up to a point without resorting to winking at the camera or making a parody of itself. This type of blockbuster is sorely, sorely missing in today's cinema's. Everything has to be angsty, or deep or convoluted or dark and serious. I'm surprised The Avengers got as big a critical and fan reception as it did because it's got the tone and intent blockbusters don't have these days.

While I agree with you on PR and how its type is sorely missing, I think it handled the tone and humour a lot better than the phase 2 Marvel movies have so far. I like dark and angsty films, but I also like light and colourful ones as well. PR was the latter and the cheesiness just added to that in a good way.

Marvel have gone too far with the comedy in their last couple of movies though for me, I think they need to tone that aspect down a bit.

And they were obviously unhappy with the PR marketing. No surprise really, we could be hearing about a sequel right now if the marketing had been better.
 
Yeah but is that all on Legendary? Wasn't it WB's job to sell the film?
 
WB was supposed to help sell it. I remember that was a major sticking point. That of the however many millions budgeted to marketing they had only like 10% or less of that budget actually was used to promote the movie.

So say the marketing budget is $100 million for instance. They spent $10 million on promotion and left the other $90 million sitting around doing nothing.
 
Did they really just leave all of it around? I remember reading that reports that Warner Bros. wasn't really spending the full alotted marketing budget on the film probably because they didn't see much of a return for it. They already knew Legendary was leaving and going elsewhere.

But again, is that not on Warner Bros. and not Joel Chiodo at Legendary? They were the distributor. They handled the marketing for the film.
 
I thought it was Warner severing ties with them, not Legendary doing the severing?
 
The score was definitely good in this movie... Guillermo Del Toro has a different approach to music. I also noticed some heavy metal when I saw it in Blade II recently.
 
Last night I went to Walmart to buy a copy of this movie for a younger cousin of mine. They had it on Bluray but no DVD. There wasn't even a place for it to be on the shelf. The guy who stocks the department was just as confused as I was.

Yeah the score is awesome, some great themes which were very monster movie inspired at times. Like the rest of the movie, it continues to grow on me.
