People need to learn how to speak English in America.

I think it's naive to expect that making English the official language will actually change anything at all, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Yeah, I've pointed that out as well and it was promptly ignored by the linguistic elitists.

Haha! Yeah, that's exactly what I said. :whatever:

No, but you implied it. You want an entire country to cater to the people who immigrate to it, and are willing to absolve said immigrants of any responsibilty they may have when it comes to melding with their new culture. Very naive.

How about monoligual advocacy enthusiast? Seriously, if you really think requiring anyone to learn any language upon entering any country to live will actually change anything at all or is even enforcable in any way, not to mention bureaucratically feasible, you are the naive one.

At any rate, what you are failing to recognize is that the American culture is a melding of MANY different cultures from all over the world. That's why the U.S. has been referred to as "The Great Melting Pot". There is no overarching culture in America, not nationally and especially not at a regional level. What I'm advocating is that people be allowed to make a CHOICE for THEMSELVES about what language they CHOOSE to learn and speak, no matter where they live. If that holds them back, that is their problem but thinking that putting forth a national requirement (and the expense behind doing so) that all people in America learn and speak English will make any difference whatsoever or change a thing is naive as hell. I think I'll go about respecting people's different cultures and choices to speak the language they would like to, but thanks for stopping by. Or perhaps I should say, muchas gracias para tu entrada equivocada.

Spanish was the first European language spoken in North America after Columbus.

The United States does not have an official language.

Mexico is in America and Spanish is spoken there.

Americans are notorious for going to other countries and expecting the citizens there to speak English

I know, but I try to be able to speak at least some of the language I'm visiting. Like where is the john?

Deseo que esta gente haría por lo menos una tentativa de aprender inglés maldito.

Las probabilidades son que no sería un asno tan duro si utilizarían inglés más a menudo. Este nunca happend en la isla de Ellis.

I don't think a language should be forced on anybody, however if you choose not to learn the language of the country that you are in, it's your problem. I don't think anyone should bend backwards for these people, who refuse to learn the language and yet expect others to accomodate them.

I never claimed I was that fluent in Spanish.

Some of it I am putting through a translator, some of it I'm not. My Spanish is horribly rusty (and was never that great to begin with). :csad:
